Hello Escapists and thank you in advance for the advice.

I haven't played Minecraft up to this point despite all of the hype. But I am thinking about trying it out as it is relatively inexpensive.

The only thing holding me back is that I bought Terraria (yes I know they are different, please don't hammer me over this) and after maybe 20 hours of gameplay I got sick of the cycle of: dig, build item, dig, build item, dig, expand house, dig...etc.

Is there something more intriguing about Minecraft that I don't know about? If its more of the same with just a different interface I would appreciate your honest opinion so I don't spend my hard earned cash. I get sick of the constant dig, build routine that seems to have no point. If you feel the same way as me and got burnt out on it let me know.

I have watched videos about Minecraft and read plenty of reviews but I would like some opinions from real gamers like you.

FUCK YEA. Minecraft recently introduced a creative mode so you don't have to do the repetitious dig, build tools, dig, build better tools, build shelter, etc etc. You can just go straight into the building style of play. The servers are funner, the mods and texture packs you can add to the game are endless...It's a fun game! My girlfriend and I have a tiny, two person server where we build houses and the like. You can do so much more in Minecraft. If ya got the money, buy it!

Erm, creative mode has been around for quite some time. It was just called Classic Mode, I believe.

OT: If you want to build things, Minecraft is your game. If not, I'd pass.

Terraria has a shelf life, an end game. Minecraft doesn't. Minecraft is also an interesting gaming experience, you only get out of it what you put into it. Unless you are passionate and driven, creative and ready to learn you'll find Minecraft boring and not fun. If you are like I and my friends are, an incredible gaming experience awaits you.

We spend hours just building enormous projects, just gathering the materials can take us days. But we love it all coming together. You need lots of time and to be very driven to enjoy it.

As someone who used to play a lot of minecraft, I would recommend you not to, it have become less about building and more about survival(and even that isn't hard these days)...

Minecraft and Terraria are entirely different. Minecraft is like playing with a box of legos with no guide/instructions, and Terraria is a side-scrolling combat game with very small building elements (which are, quite honestly, a rather large pain).

There's more incentive to fight stuff in Terraria, and the actual fighting is fun. The combat in Minecraft ranges from boring to incredibly frustrating, and the game's focus is obviously just on building stuff. Minecraft's recent attempts to beef up the survival mode features make it seem like it's trying to follow in Terraria's footsteps, but the Creative mode is the game's strongest facet - all of the building with none of the pointless grind and frustrating gather mechanics.

I've sunk well over 1000 hours in to Minecraft, and I'm still not bored of it.

If you're creative, it certainly helps, but you don't have to be. And you need patients, because it all pays off in the end.

It's patience.

Also how so? I've found Minecraft to offer no sense of accomplishment, just an emphasis that you've spent the last umpteen hours sitting on your ass doing nothing.

Sure, Minecraft can be all about the building, if you want it to.
Me, I go exploring the world, explore the caves, and kill cows for fun... :p
And now there are abandoned mine shafts that you can get lost in for hours, I'm loving it!

There is less of a point in minecraft. Minecraft is NOT a game, it is a building sim.

All you do is build houses or giant gold cocks (aka whatever), the constant building is broken up by the odd (and I do mean odd) mob that attacks you.

99% of mobs come at night but even then they can be kept away with torches.

So think of terraria as almost no building and you see how much building minecraft is.

If I am not mistaken there is a very basic free version if you want to give it a go
