What do Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil both have in common? They were both Playstation exclusives that were later ported to Nintendo consoles. This list of titles looks set to grow with rumours [http://www.vg247.com/2009/02/26/rumour-climax-working-on-silent-hill-remake-for-wii/] that the original Silent Hill is being ported to the Wii.

I myself hope that the rumours are true, as I missed out on the original when it came out, but have massively enjoyed the two sequels (2 and 3) that I have played. A chance to visit the original game in quasi-next-gen graphics seems like an opportunity not to be missed. This is of course as long as they don't overdo the 'remote waggle' or make it an on-rails [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/89764] shooter [http://uk.wii.ign.com/objects/827/827187.html]. There aren't many ways it could go wrong if they just stick to the foremost features of the series (namely the atmosphere and excellent story-telling).

I'm aware that the game is but a very faint rumour, and that the rumours also suggest that it will come to the PSP, presumably in the same manner as Origins [http://uk.psp.ign.com/objects/826/826999.html], but not having a PSP this is not the piece of information that is of most interest to me (though feel free to discuss the PSP port if you feel you have something constructive to say).

So I ask you fellow Escapians, could a Silent Hill Wii work? Or do you feel that one can only truly 'explore' the psychological horror that is Silent Hill with your hands gripped firmly around a joypad?

I think i can see how it would work. Control you character with the nunchuk thinga-ma-jig. Use the wiimote to control your hands and make your actions work. I think it could add an extra slant to the horror. If you are actually swinging your wiimote frantically trying to beat away the monstrosities its got to have an added effect than simply pressing a button. I geuss it will hamper it slightly with onscreen messages telling you to "Turn wiimote anticlockwise to shut off the valve".
I dunno. I can see it working but the Wii is generally thought to be for old people and children so would it really sell that well? I mean my brother bought a Wii played with it once and its sat there for about 6 months now. I geuss i'd like it to come out so I could play it. Entirely selfish but there you go.

Unfortunately, yes. Despite what it first suggests, the Wii is actually a very good way of beating the crap out of intimacy with a game. Immersion can stand pressing buttons, but the white box is a whole new level of 'eh?'.

There is some precedent for Survival Horror on the Wii; Resident Evil 4 and Fatal Frame IV are both on Wii.

I would have to disagree; two of my favourite boss battles were on the Wii. One was the end of Bully, and the other the final sword fight with Ganon(dorf) in Twilight Princess. While neither was a particularly difficult battle, it was only after the battle had ended that I realised how much effort I'd been putting in using my arms to attack as opposed to just pressing a button. It added a whole new level of immersion that I haven't felt in any game just requiring a joypad.
