Hi

It's a very simple question. Fun, what is it good for? Absolutely EVERYTHING. With recent goings on, I say recent, this has been going on for yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaars, it seems as if having fun in games is the last thought. If it isn't the "PC versus Console" debate or "[insert game IP here] receives an 8 out of 10, which also means it's shit" ho hah, many just some how assume other peoples fun is the wrong kind of fun.

Here is an interesting point; http://youtu.be/11q6kOoH-pQ?t=4m39s

This isn't just in games either. If someone likes a particle movie and gets joy, fun and comfort from it, who's right is it to say that they are wrong to enjoy it or their kind of fun is the "wrong" kind of fun.

What's wrong with having fun?.. providing it's safe and doesn't harm others.

You can have fun with whatever you want. However, people like to talk about things, so chances are, if you are having a discussion about something, well some prople won't agree , and tell you why. Because it's a discussion. You get both sides.

Because devotion to a hobby sometimes means you go "beyond" having fun with it. For better or for worse, a lot of people around here take gaming pretty damn seriously. I don't have any issue with healthy debate, but I wish people would take a breather every once and awhile. It seems we're always two weeks between controversies these days.

That video right there is why I fucking love Inside Gaming. They fucking get it! Adam Kovic just said everything I complain about.

Even taking away games it seems people can't even have fun anymore. Just look at the escapist. Everything has to be a social justice issue, a personal issue, or some fucking issue. Even if the base thread isn't, you can bet your ass someone will come in and try to make it one.

I don't like their assessment that game reviewers play something to get on with their lives/play the games they actually want to play. It probably happens, but that's still a failing on the game's part to at least entertain the reviewer. If anything this should have been a problem with the inflated importance of number scores or the idea of reviewing an MMO(-like) game in a couple of days. Yes, that's not how it works with MMOs. No one is denying this. A lot of the reviews I looked at said the story was lackluster, everything's name is generic or cliche, and the map feels empty a decent amount of the time when playing solo, but the shooting experience was satisfying, the Crucible thing was a lot of fun, and there is content there with potential to be expanded on. Even the people who have bought Destiny say similar things. That isn't that wide a gap between reviewer and consumer. As far as I can tell the people who always play in groups have a much better time. Frankly I'd accuse them of pandering to a segment of their audience that may have negative feelings toward game reviewers if it weren't for Machinima's experience with Microsoft. *cough*XB1M13*cough*

We can all go back to having fun when passions finish simmering. A lot of people are still invested in "their side" right now, myself included. Perhaps the September release schedule will help calm nerves.

But...it's fun to condemn other people's fun. It's also fun to interpret any sort of criticism or talk of imperfection as an attack.

Hell, the media makes a lot of money out of allowing people to be comfortably outraged at something that doesn't actually matter.

(Oh, and then of course there are legitimate complaints mixed in with this)

In my view ( USA) I think its just a representation of the environment we currently live in. No one can really debate nor leave people alone anymore in every facet of life and if one tries to ignore or get a long, something, somewhere gets found that will drag you into an aggressive back and fourth.

With our nation's climate ,we'd start a full fledged war over a jelly sandwich.

Because all matter in existence is actually sexist and racist, you sexist racist.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go do sexist and racist things, like play Claire and read A Clash of Kings instead of my uni readings.

Because you're having fun WRONG.

Not everyone. Just you.

Seriously? Because games are a multi-billion dollar business, by some counts bigger than movies (and you know how bizarre and ego-driven that industry is.) People are playing games, so that's where the mind-share is.

(Until one decides to define them as something other than "people", of course.)

Every moment seems to threaten to define the future of the industry, or the future of the medium, or even the future of our culture, depending on who you ask, when, and why. Video games are a powerful force shaping everyone's minds and the way that shaping occurs has to be controlled by the "right" people; simultaneously video games are a trivial thing, a "toy" played by the very young and those lacking maturity, so what are you getting all up in arms about?

...Sometimes uttered by the same people, in the same breath.

There's nothing to say that you can't only participate in "fun" threads; there's plenty of content here and elsewhere that still celebrates the fun.

At times, that seems like the wiser course, honestly; just hoping all the hatred and anger and vilifying of people who think differently passes without too much damage.

If you find certain things fun, enjoy them. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing, unless you want to. Some have fun debating things, I do sometimes, but if you don't, that's fine too. But don't expect everyone to be the same way as you are OP.

Same here, I've read the odd thing about it, but mostly stayed out and delved into other interests for a while.

I imagine that it's because people like feeling superior about what they like and don't like. I mean, if you felt that you were better than someone, wouldn't you feel good that you were better than said person? Doesn't matter in what way, the fact is you are better than that person for not liking something that they like, and you list the reasons why. Whether you are a hipster, a troll, or just a dick who hates AAA games because they "lack the heart of indie games" or some such similar bullshit, you are going to lord your opinion over the masses with no regard for the actual value of your insignificant opinion when compared to the mass of individual thoughts that is the internet.

Now as for something that people haven't said yet on this thread, likely will sound stupid, and referencing something that Adam said, people have grown complacent about having opinions on things on the internet. Whether or not they actually have experienced it, the majority of people who do not like something often do not have the writing or speaking talent to properly accentuate the specific reasons as to why they do not like said games or whatnot, and when someone comes along who DOES, then they immediately jump onto that person's opinion, and it spreads like a spark in... somewhere dry and crinkly. If anyone remembers the Sequelitis episode where Arin explains his reasons as to why he does not like Ocarina of Time and, by extension of his presentation and explanation of reasons of said dislike, all 3D Zelda games, I saw a mass of people who did not like OoT either immediately jump onto his opinion, thanking him for making the video, and but a few clicks later, I saw more and more people bashing the game for the exact same reasons that Arin had for his distaste of Ocarina of Time. I don't know if that was purely coincidence or if I'm actually right about something for once in my life, but from what I can tell, when one person can properly voice their thoughts on a specific subject without sounding like a jackass, then people will mimic what is said and continue to do so.

I'm just going to say that different people look for different things in their media. Hell, even the concept of fun is subjective. Many people find Minecraft fun, but some don't. I'm sure some people enjoy doing their taxes. Who's to say what's fun?

I take it the appropriate response to people not having fun is to complain about them not having fun. Otherwise, it would appear you're part of the problem. At the very least, it seems counterproductive.

But Vault, how are we to know which topics are right or wrong and what we should shut up about if we don't talk about it constantly?

I guess time changed. I mean a few years ago there were several fun topics on the first page and now we got this but this is within reasons which I guess it has something to do with the current stuff happening around the globe.

It's a product of the gaming community becoming both wider and more tightly organized, the internet in general and people's inability to avoid drama.

Basically, most people don't care about this stuff. However because of the way the net works, it's not hard for a small number of very vocal malcontents to blow an issue out of proportion, causing more people to get involved and it mushrooms from there.

After a while, it gets to a point where it's very difficult to stay neutral.

I mean, how many 'which console should I buy?' threads devolve into poop slinging contests between Sony boosters, MS boosters, Nintendo boosters and PC purists? Heck these days it even gets crazily heated between the Nvidia and ATI crowds and it's hard to make a thread on tech forums without it being sidetracked.

I'm not sure if it's a fixable problem. People are just desperate for validation of their opinions and purchasing choices.

In regards to the video about Destiny, I was just pissed off that it wasn't Marathon 4.

WHERE IS MARATHON 4? Please Bungie!

Don't know if serious, but that's not too far from the truth. No matter how much we evolve we'll likely never get rid of that primal urge to gang up on others.

Why can't we just have fun anymore? I don't know, maybe because the internet is constantly making us aware of too many things that aren't really that fun. Like that fact that we can't just have fun anymore. That certainly isn't fun, is it?
