If you're unfamiliar with the concept of a live album, it's when a band does a concert, records it, and sells it as an album. They usually try to keep things fuck-up-free, and they'll do some things they wouldn't normally do in concert. It's also usually a longer concert than normal where they do a pretty good chunk of their catalog, provided it's not something as massive as the Beatles'.

My favourite would be "Our Live Album is Better Than Your Live Album" by Reel Big Fish. It's just awesome and it's hilarious. A couple of the songs on it are ones that I prefer to the original album versions, too. Wish I'd been there for it.

The other I could choose would be Metallica's "S&M". It's awesome. That said, it's something that they could never do again because it just wouldn't be the same. Not only that, but the conductor of the San Francisco Symphony died, so... there's that.

P.s. Yeah, I checked for other versions of this... the last was in February of 2010 and there's a rule against digging up old threads, yes?

I'd have to go with Pink Floyd's 'Pulse'... It's just to good to hear all those classic Floyd tracks, played and sung perfectly, with such an intense atmosphere. Great album, also great DVD.

Nirvana: Unplugged in New York is my favourite. The set was actually cut short because Kurt reportedly felt he couldn't follow his rendition of "In the Pines" by Ledbelly.

Not sure if it counts, but Led Zeppelin at Earl's Court 1975 is legendary. Indeed a lot of the old bootlegs are noteworthy as well.

Nice to see another Reel Big Fish fan out there btw! :D

Edit: typo fix. 1975, not 1974. Thanks for pointing that out. :)

Depending on mood I'd say either Pantera's 101% Proof or Nirvana's Unplugged in New York. I only have a few live albums myself as most of my live stuff is on DVD. As far as DVDs go, by far and away my favourite is Metallica's Cunning Stunts.

N brofist you two, Reel Big Fish FTW.
Right? I'm going to see them in Toronto on the 22nd. Saying I'm excited is a gross understatement.

S&M by metallica is still the greatest live album ever recorded. its what got me into metal and saved me from the dark days of mainstream pop. *shivers*

Im pretty partial to "If You Want Blood, You Got it" by AC/DC. It perfectly captures the energy of one of the greatest rock and roll bands on one disc.

Either Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' Live Seeds album. Or Warren Zevon's Learning to Flinch. Both are truly excellent. Oh, I have to add in Portishead's Roseland NYC Live. Another fantastic one.

Ooh toughie. Either Pulse (Pink Floyd) or Völkerball (Rammstein). The former, well, it's Pink Floyd kicking some major ass (more than usual), and the latter, well, if you know anything about Rammstein you can probably guess why. I don't have Live aus Berlin (only album by Rammstein I don't have, not counting EPs/singles), but that might be my favorite if I had it, if only for Wilder Wein.

Three way split:

* Iron Maiden - Rock in Rio
* Metallica - S&M
* Red Hot Chili Peppers - Live in Hyde Park

All of them great live albums.
