anything in the right place can instant kill... but I see your point, I know a few games where " what should be done" and what is done don't match up the weapon.

I also look at starwars games alot.....a lightsaber in all rights should instant kill or at the very least dismember whoever your fighting, but from the old Atari/Nes games, onward to dark forces, to kotor, then force unleashed, it constantly takes alot of work to kill off a officer clad in nothing but cloth uniform compared to what movies and books make clear sabers do...

Nerfing one weapon, and bumping the skills of another for the sake of balancing a game makes sense, as annoying as it is when you want to be technical geek, and fan boy/girl about a particular weapon.. but then again, if all the weapons we loved in games did the damage on a more realistic level...pretty much all games would be freakishly easy, and over way way to soon.

A person CAN survive alot of stabs but can also die from one in a minor place if they bleed out.

Confirmed, i DO run faster with a knife.

clearly it makes more sense that getting shot point blank in the face will deal less damage than a knife cut to the thigh
hmm...maybe i can see your point...

Yeah, that's something I've never got about COD4, knife attacks should only be one hit kill if stealth, ie: from behind. But shit if you're attacking head on... TF2 has it so right

hence the over way too soon possibility...

well thats a misnomer too, I forgot that death really does not matter much anymore, as the limited lives/ continue options are a rarity rather than a general rule now.

Because it's more fun to knife people than shoot them. It takes greater skill, or a suicide urge, and being able to successfully get into melee without getting your vital organs splattered should be rewarded with an insta-kill.
Anyone can use a gun, but it takes someone special to refuse to use a gun and get in a lot closer.

I've got a better one, why every now and then, can you spray 10 clean hits into someone and they turn round and go *bang bang* and you're dead.

I wonder this all the time. I often blind fire on someone with my MP5 from about 5 feet away and they run up and give me a little cut. That knife must of severed some sort of vital artery, or something, because there is no way he could of lived 5-6 bullets pounding in to him.
Sigh, I still love Cod 4 besides that though.

It's called Risk/Reward, if you risk a close quarters attack, you are rewarded with an instant kill. It has more to do with Game Balance and Fun than with realism.
And this is the sentiment that makes pistols more powerful/accurate per shot than any assault rifle.
It is an idea that was brought over from Unreal that only really works in twitch shooters. I want a rifle to be dead killy, and only need run around with a pistol if I am that badly off. There are other ways to balance out weapons rather than power alone. Speed is something ritually ignored. A faster strafe and perhaps a dash would be the reward for holstering a rifle, and would give smgs and carbines new importance in a power versus maneuvorability battle.
