You know what game has aged badly? System Shock, it is virtually unplayable unless you add the mouse look patch.
This 1000 times.
And also Half life.
Of course you could install it and play it for hours but if anyone who hadn't played the game in its time would find it boring and unattractive because that sort of shit is done in almost every FPS.

Yeah, I was just thinking the other day how poorly ME2 has aged since last year as well. I just cant motivate myself to play through it again, because I know Im going to have the same experience, with most of it being about cover/shooting.

ME1 I have trouble playing through as well because again, I know the experience wont be any different than the last time (even though more varied than ME2s at least) and of course ME2 comes after it, and Im not looking forward to that...

Garrus sucked in ME2 though. All the characters suck really. Only a couple of crappy powers between them, and his dialogue is fucking woeful.

"Sorry, you arent the correct gender to fuck this grasshopper, so despite being claim to be one of your closest friends, he will just dodge you with crappy calibrations".

So many of the ME2 characters just feel so.... disposable.

When they climb on top of boxes in combat and get killed in 2 seconds, it just makes it more obvious.

Planescape:Torment, as much as I love it, hasn't aged at all well.
Bah. Use the widescreen patch and it's art style makes it one of the best looking games out there. And the audio is still good.

Mass Effect 2 is vastly more fine-tuned and polished than it's predecessor. I think everyone has that same experience when playing a later iteration of a series and seeing how the same game-play mechanics and concepts are presented in a slightly more primitive light. Such is the same with films. For example comparing Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith to the original 1977 Star Wars, visually there's no contest between the two. However, that doesn't factor narrative, and characters, and everything else that makes films great. On the surface, Mass Effect 2 is an infinitely better game. However, I felt that the first Mass Effect had a better storyline with more shocking moments and plot twists. That's not to say one is a better game, but Garrus's ineptitude in battle and some of the less polished aspects of the game's mechanics aren't the only things to consider when judging the merit of our medium.

On another note, given that I mentioned films and want to bring up another form of media, literature (that is to say novels, graphic novels, short stories, and poetry) ages very well. Outside of the evolution of human dialect, excellent books transend time like no other form of media.

I dunno I never used him. I was a Engineer/Tech guy (can't remember the class name) so I always needed someone with Biotics (Liara) and a Combatty dude with me (Wrex).

I'm replaying Mass Effect 1 out of boredom and a wonderful mid term schedule that gives me friday and monday off. And as I'm playing I've been crushed with a revelation. Garrus sucks. I don't remember him being so great either, but now he seems to die every chance I get, it's almost pitiful after how great he was in Mass Effect Two.

[complain]But that's just the start. Mass Effect wasn't an amazing game when I bought it a few years ago, (I bought it along side Fallout 3 two or three years ago) but it wasn't this bad. Maybe it's just an example of a game that didn't age well? Really I'm just replaying it to give myself something different to see in Mass Effect 2 but really I'm not sure if I can do it.[/complain]

Just for a bit of conversation, what game do you know that didn't age well? Maybe something was FANTASTIC and now a bit meh. Or something that was pretty good that's now barely playable (like mass effect).
funny you should mention that, Im just going through an extensive third playthrough trying to get pretty much EVERYHTING ans setting myslef up for ME3 (can't wait to get started on ME2 for the third time)

I actually think this game has gotten better the more Ive played it,I think the reason is its so easy to miss out on all that extra stuff first time around and Im enjoying the actual shooting more

so To disagree with you right now ME 1 is more playable for me than it was when I first tried it, but I supose thats personal choice (I did find that all that extra stuff was alittle...cut and paste if that makes sense)
Im interesting to know exactally what is is thats putting you off?

the big weaknesss of games as medium is since 3d they don't tend to age well, how ever this does get better each generation, perhaps in the future our favorite titles will get graphical updates

I actually thought his character was better in ME1.

He went all 'angry-emo' in ME2, I preferred him as the mildly-pissed off but sensitive type in ME1.

edit: oh wait I thourght you ment half life 2...sorry my bad, well I don't wan't all that typing to go to waste so anyone who thinks half life two hasn't aged well...

I only played half life 2 relitivley recently....although the graphics are "old" to me they seem to give it a distinctive look...alost like an art style

and uuuhhhh yes "shooting stuff with guns" is done in almost every FPS because...well its called a first person shooter and that "shit" sells obviously, but do you know what half life dose that not many FPS do?

a unique setting (not anything based in reality/army realted) a story that leaves you wanting to know more and that you can only really grasp at what happened, great charachters (you know who Im talking about) and an atmosphere and visual style thats awsome (especially the opening, going into the train station totally sets the mood)

so Id say the half life has aged very well

BLASPHEME!

How DARE you even THINK of ATTEMPTING to CLAIM that Garrus sucks. I think that this calls for a meeting on the gentlemanly field of honor, to duel for your most disrespectful of claims.

In all seriousness, yeah, companions died a lot if you didn't babysit them, and Garrus didn't have much to offer in terms of armor or hit points, but if you got his snipers skill up and put him in the right spot he was just devastating. He was a pretty good utility party member too, not to mention him just being an unrelenting bad ass cop buddy.
