Since when was it "uncool" to have opinions on games?

This has always happened, even in real life.

I'm a conservative supporter, I voted for Cameron (wait for the hate to roll in on that one). If I'm discussing politics with friends and I disagree with them my opinion will always be dismissed as it just being because I'm a tory or because that's what Cameron said. When really the fact I tend to agree with the conservatives is the reason I voted for them.

I myself have opinions that seem to contrast with "popular opinion".

I see what you're talking about everywhere, and, personally, just believe it to be people attempting to justify their own opinion.

Humans, naturally, dislike views that oppose their own. I mean, if your ideas are wrong, what does that say about yourself? People like to be right, and some will take it to the extreme to "prove" the rightness of their own opinion.
And with the anonymity that the internet brings, this is easier than ever before.

That's just my thoughts on the matter.
I second this.

It also seems that everyone is trying to be the intelligent game reviewer on some level. They're on the mind set of something like, 'By bashing games that everyone likes it will make me better than everyone else because it will look like I was able to analyse it more.'

A topic title with something like, '[good game] was shit.' has attention whore written all over it. Not all the time, but I see it in a lot of cases.

well, to be fair. there IS a trend of people specifically hating a game the more popular it is. Not to troll, but because liking a popular game isnt "hip"

kinda like the whole FF6 vs FF7 debate.

Because no one else?s opinion is valid apart from mine.
Because disagreeing with me just means you know nothing, are 5, retarded, a noob at X game, live in your parents basement, have no life, need to laid...
The prevalence of the internet has allowed a much broader spectrum of person onto the internet over the past few years, we have seen it with the rise of the forum troll once a rare beast now most forums contain one or two dedicated trolls (or more depending on community size).
There has always been antagonism between fans of certain games but it used to mostly be friendly (nostalgia?) these days it tends to be downright brutal, BF3 vs MW3 anyone?

It probably has to do with the fact that so many people confuse 'not my taste' with 'bad'.
Where's the line at? I mean, taking Dragon Age 2 as an example, where does "I don't care for voice acting", something that isn't my taste, invalidate me criticizing it's heavily reused resources? For that matter, couldn't criticism of the acting be valid if it does pose a gameplay problem?

Actually, what I'd like to know is when did it become "uncool" to criticize developers' pricing policies regarding DLC, included content and used video game sales? Why, if I critique a developer's anti-used sales scam as being a scam is it considered valid to say "Well, they have to make money somehow"? No other industry gets that support from consumers.

Because gamers are pricks. That is just how it is.
I wouldn't say that. I would say, however, that the loud opinionated ones are pricks and the gaming community has a whole lot of people who could be filed under that category. Honestly I don't see the point. There are too many similarities between the games people fight over to even really warrant this kind of heated hatred. Back in the SNES vs Sega Genesis days those consoles were different enough to inspire actual debate. Ya know what, I think I just got it. People don't want to debate they want to be right and the best way to be right is to stick your fingers in your ears and shout how right you are and how everyone else is a moron.

Well, it doesn't help that most people frame their opinions in terms of, "X is shit" rather than, "I do not really like X." Which of course inevitably pisses of fans of X.

And sometimes people are just tired of hearing it. I'm not into Call of Duty myself, but even I'm a bit sick of people ranting about how much it sucks and is ruining the games industry. Yeah yeah, we know. Move on.
