This. Although I was surprised how much Crash Bandicoot 2 didn't suck after playing the original.

Huh.

I don't own this game, but boy ooh boy i wish i did!

If Sony put this on the PSN network i would so get a PS3 because of it =D

Oh my God, I played that game. By Christ I loved it. The sound of the text boxes is forever etched into my memory. I remember that when you beat one boss he would open a restaurant at your village. Good times.

Hot Wheels Turbo Racing!!! I was just thinking about that game recently! I loved the shit out of that game. Gex has NOT aged well though.

When replaying old games like that you need to cut them a little slack. Now that we're all used to tight controls and great graphics and gameplay, it seems easy to knock older games even though they didn't have the resources we have now.

I consider the original Diablo to be all but unplayable these days.

The original Command & Conquer got that feel after having played Red Alert 1, or Generals years later.

Pretty much any pixelated shooter has become a nightmare regardless of nostalgia. Doom, Doom 2, Golden Eye etc.

That Namco box set thing for the 64. To be fair, I never did like many of those games(why do people love Pacman so much?).

Doesn't really count as a video game, but gigapets (or tomagatchi, did I spell that right?).

Mordwyl's second rule of video game design: Any game's aesthetics past its decade will suck.

But I recently borrowed a copy of Alundra 2 and that pretty much sucks balls. I love how the game has you, literally, looking for shit in the form of a side quest that has you looking for varieties of toilet. I'd have bought whoever came up with that a drink then and I would now!
I don't see your point, Alundra 2 always sucked balls. It'll never be its predecessor.

Mine would have to be Snake Rattle and Roll. It was an old NES game that I saved up weeks of allowances for bought it and could never get past like the 5th level. I tried it a few months ago and wondered why? The game was trash.

As awesome as Goldeneye was back in the day, it's unplayable shit now. Same with Perfect Dark and Jet Force Gemini.

...Weird...

I can go back and have a blast at Wolfenstein...even Paradroid...hell, even Wizard of Wor. Simply don't get this idea that games age badly. I'd much rather play one of them than half of these waist-high shooters.

And Doom is still a hell of a game.

Equally, I can love Team Fortress 2, find Mass Effect dull, have Prototype bore me to death and not really like VVVVV.

Nostalgia and the rose-tinted glasses are often just props used by those that don't have fond memories.

It doesn't really suck, but I dug out Tetris for the Gameboy (and the Gameboy I used to play it on, went and bought some batteries and everything) and it's amazingly harder than the newer World rules. I can beat level 15 marathon and Radical mode on the PSP version (without that poxy hold function), but all the special tricks (e.g. T-spins) aren't programmed into the gameboy one, they required a lot of skill to pull off before the lock-in occurs, and you can't just spin forever either.

We liked some shitty games as a kid because we didn't know any better. Kids usually aren't the best at figuring out that a game sucks. But some of the old games are still good despite older graphics and less complexity. We partly spoilt by the current generation so of course some of them seem bad in comparision. But some of them stand shoulder to shoulder with modern games as well.

Actually, most of the time, I've been finding that the stuff I played was more fun than I'd given it credit.

Admittedly, I've kinda fallen out with some of them, particularly older fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2, but I wouldn't call them bad, really.

There is a reason you don't pick up games from your childhood. Reality will come and crush the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia.
Ristar strongly disagrees with you.

Never had that problem, but I think that's a result of usually being too cynical for nostalgia. I do still occasionally play old games, but they're pretty much what I expect based on my memories. Point in case, I recently got StarTropics for NES. I started it up, remembering full well that it was a merciless pain in the ass, but fun and quirky.

Although, there is a very good reason I haven't replayed either Xenogears or the first Parasite Eve in about 6 years. Pretty sure they would disappoint me now.

Considering I had Mario Kart 64, Mario 64, Body Harvest, Worms, Bomberman 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Jet Force Gemini and both N64 Zeldas, no I have not experienced this, recently I went back to play Paper Mario because I never played it when I was younger, it was still a good game despite being quite old.
