I would come home from school and play (and beat) Sonic The Hedgehog 2. I still play it all the time. Kid Chameleon, Shining Force, Street Fighter II, and Civilization III are still just as glorious as ever.
No, but I thought those games were crap back then and I can find myself enjoying Lufia 1 & 2 still which are even older.MBurner 93 said:We remember those games of old, the ones you played after getting home from gradeschool. If you grew up in the 8-bit age or with the N64 and PS1, you know what kind of games I'm talking about. I found my old Nintendo 64, plugged in a cartridge, and fired it up. The familiar intro fires up, and I started playing, when it suddenly dawned on me. THIS. GAME. IS. SHIT! The gameplay feels so poor, and all of your cherished childhood memories come crashing down. For me, these included Gex and Hot Wheels Turbo Racing. What about you guys? Any similar sob stories?
Same here. I dug out my Tetris and my original Gameboy (that huge grey brick) and found myself playing for hours. I also found (and bought for $5, thank you) Power Rangers: The Movie, for my Game Gear that I still have from my childhood (yes, I actually had one of those six-battery monstrosities - if the Gameboy was a brick that thing was a cinder-block). I don't know how, but I could beat the thing like clockwork as a kid and now, after hours of blood, sweat, and tears, I can barely make it to the end boss, let alone beat it. I guess my reflexes just aren't what they used to be...Megacherv said:It doesn't really suck, but I dug out Tetris for the Gameboy (and the Gameboy I used to play it on, went and bought some batteries and everything) and it's amazingly harder than the newer World rules.
That's one game from my childhood that I never beat. Probably because I needed two days to devote to it since there was no save feature back then.xXAsherahXx said:I would come home from school and play (and beat) Sonic The Hedgehog 2.
Blasphemer! I shall have you flayed in the town square by sundown morrow!Zarokima said:As awesome as Goldeneye was back in the day, it's unplayable shit now.
you liked it originally... how the...LamborghiniJackson said:Ape escape for the PSP.
I locked myself in the bathroom and cried for an hour. Then I grew a beard and went back on Live to kick some ass on CoD.
I still play GoldenEye and Perfect Dark (Never played Jet Force Gemini) and I reckon they hold up well. They're definitley inferior when it comes to controls since the 64 only has one analogue stick, but they're nowhere near 'unplayable shit'.Zarokima said:Pick any 3D console shooter from before dual-analog controllers. There you go. As awesome as Goldeneye was back in the day, it's unplayable shit now. Same with Perfect Dark and Jet Force Gemini.
You misunderstood my statement. I mean no matter how much a company tries to make a game visually appealing it's not going to be the one thing that'll keep it good. Ocarina of Time and MGS are good games, Alundra 2 wasn't.Crono Maniac said:One of the only complaints I've frequently heard about that game is that it's far too easy. Speaking as one who grew up with Castlevania 1-4 (1, 3, and 4 I still play through at least once a year), I'm inclined to agree.Judgement101 said:Castlevaina: SotN, seriously, it was fun for about 30 mins, then you realise it's unnessisarily difficult and has the most cheap deaths ever.
I disagree. 3D games age far, far worse than 2D games. Yoshi's Island is the type of game who's graphics never, ever age. Same with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. This is why Mega Man 2 still looks way better than Mega Man Legends, even though they're both fantastic games. The only way 3D graphics can prevent aging poorly usually involves unique, unrealistic aesthetics, like Zelda Wind Waker and Okami. In 20 years, Zelda: Wind Waker will still look fantastic. Twilight Princess, less so.Mordwyl said:Mordwyl's second rule of video game design: Any game's aesthetics past its decade will suck.
That being said, one should never give up on awesome old 3D games because they look kind of crappy. Just because Link constantly clips into scenery and Solid Snake doesn't have eyes doesn't mean we should give up on ever playing Zelda: Ocarina and Metal Gear Solid again.
I have no idea what Ristar is.NeutralDrow said:Actually, most of the time, I've been finding that the stuff I played was more fun than I'd given it credit.
Admittedly, I've kinda fallen out with some of them, particularly older fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2, but I wouldn't call them bad, really.
Ristar strongly disagrees with you.Jonluw said:There is a reason you don't pick up games from your childhood. Reality will come and crush the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia.
