There is a huge backstory behind the creation of this thread, but I'll just give you the abridged version.

There is this guy, a friend of a friend of mine, who I am often forced to endure hang out with, he is a bit of a tool. He believes that Defense of the Ancients is the single greatest game of all time. He refuses to play anything else and spends most of the time we are together either telling me about pro DotA players, his own exploits in the game or mocking me for enjoying single player games.

He only plays DotA. That's it. He is a single-game elitist. He is the only one I have ever heard of, but I am sure there are more of his kind out there. I figured the best place to search would be The Escapist forums, so here I am. Escapists, have you ever, or do you know anyone who only plays one game, and refuses to play anything else? Please share your stories.

I have never heard of anyone like that.

I have a friend who loudly and regularly tells us Castlevania is the best thing ever and we should buy it.

But he still plays other games too...

I have a friend who only plays Call Of Duty (actually, I have a few). God, they piss me off.
CoD and Halo are supposed to be the only game you play. Standard multiplayer only, with a bunch of frat boys.

That's why the sales are so high.

I know one, who insists the only decent game made in the 2000's was Mother 3. He still harps on how great retro games were, but never plays any. In fact I think the only game he's played in the last 10 years is Mother 3; and he insists that everybody import it so they can download the rom and translation patch.

Does it count that they have played other games in the past, but only plays one game now and only that one game?

I have a handful of WoW-only friends.

My brother only plays World of Warcraft. He used to dabble in Fallout 3 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare, but now it seems he strictly plays WoW.

I've never gotten how people can only play one game, without variety I would have lost interest in games all together by now. Every now and then I stumble across a game (Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill 2 etc.) that after finishing leaves me wanting to play it more, sometimes for a day, sometimes I still want to play the game a full month later, but the games that I like the most often have a great story or atmosphere, and that doesn't leave much room in the replayability department.

Maybe if I got into a game that had such vast replayability like WoW I'd get how people get that way, but then I'd have to play World of Warcraft

The makers of Dota, have now produced their own game(Dota was a warcraft mod) called LoL "League of legends". You could always point out that even the makers of his game have moved on ;)

OT: Cant say i know anyone like that, but i did have a friend that was stuck in diablo 2 to the exclusion of everything else for a long while.

Wow ... depressing, a depressing existence, so many great games, too limit yourself to one. It's like an existence without music, or never watching movies.

Let's see I know 3 Halo 3 people like that, a Gears of War 1 person, a DotA person, and 2 TF2 people. And I hate talking to all 7 of them.

I'm not obsessive like that, but I don't really play that many games. I do, however, play the ones I have to death. Reason being, money tends to be an issue for me, in that I don't have that much of it. As such, when I buy a game, it tends to be a single-player RPG which will take me a while to finish. I will then play that game, and nothing else, until I've finished the story, or, in the case of Oblivion, until I get bored of it. This fortunately has resulted in me having played quite a lot of games over the years, and while I certainly have favourites which I often come back to, I don't just talk about one game all the time.

That being said, I do know people who play nothing except Modern Warfare, and they talk about it all the time. It's unbelievably annoying; if they're going to spend all their time talking about games, at least have the decency to discuss more than one. On top of this, they refuse to even consider playing any of the other Call of Duty games. I'm not convinced they even know the other games exist. Fortunately, they're not going to the same university as me, so I won't have to put up with it any more.
