Have a friend of mine who only cared about Halo religiously for years, thankfully he's starting to explore other games but still cares about it deeply. Ah well, as long as he's enjoying other games as well, then it's fine by me.

I have a friend like this, but I may go as far to say hes maybe a bit worse. He plays a single game for a while, rufuses to play anything else, then whenever he gets pissed off and goes to another game thats usually just more of the same and refuses to even talk about any other game, especially the ones he used to play.

Yeah there a alot of people. I used to play Halo at school with a guy like that but the bad part was is he sucked.
I have a few "friends" who are like that. One claims that Halo is the greatest thing ever made, one says the same thing about World of Warcraft, and one said that about Half-Life 2. I tend to ignore them but whenever gaming gets brought up while their around, the suffering begins.
DotA pollution aside, I really don't see the problem here. They're not hurting anyone. They just find one game more fun or worth putting their time into. You can't force a guy who just wants to play baseball to play badminton for a change, and that's really what this kind of gaming is--a sport that's not a sport. It's fun and recreational for them, and that's fine.
A gamer is someone who plays games, not someone who plays a game. Tell him that next time he mocks you.
You can also get someone on eBay to print DotA with a little shield on it ontp a clear beachball or a bedsheet as a gift, hoping he doesn't get that you're joking about the game being his security bubble/blanket.
Come to think of it, my grandma is like him. She only plays the Westward series (casual games) & has done so every day for years.
There was also one editor for either PC Gamer or one of the better yet dead magazines always talked of nothing but how WoW was the greatest thing since cars.

I have never had the displeasure to meet someone who only plays one game. The worst I've ever known was a friend of mine who would not stop playing MW2 until he got to 70 tenth prestige... And while I detest the thought of extended exposure to that game, he's a good enough fellow so I don't hate him for it. And he only got to like 30 tenth before he cracked and played Halo with me for a week. Now I can give him shit.
