Beyond Good and Evil when Jade and Double H find Pey'j dead on the moon. There's a really faint piano (I think) theme going on in the background and the dialogue switches to text. That was really depressing because he was alive when we mounted the rescue mission and I thought he was simply imprisioned, didnt think they'd encase a dead body and you had to move on. That moment was really distressing.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (Ps1 Version)

The Wii version totally fucking butchered that heart-wrending ending. Screw English Dubs, now I know how 4-kids haters feel.

Definitely Divinity 2: Ego Draconis.
The ending was INCREDIBLY unsatisfying.
As a player you realize after ~4 hours of playing that you are being lied to, but you're still destined to lose in the end. Then you get to the end beat everyone up and then being told "hahaha you've been tricked" and that's it. Stupid game.

Just to reitterate - SPOILERS.

Metal Gear Solid. Sniper Wolf. Nuff Said.

Snake Eater. When you get to the end, after having your mentor betray you, the physicaly and mentaly scaring battle to the finish and the eventual execution of your mentor. All to find out that it was all a lie by the government and a heroic roll of the dice by your mentor.

Thought the end of GTA IV wat pretty good, then I played Red Dead.

My first playthrough of Mass effect 2

I lost Thane in the first specialist choice of the collector base. that pissed me off then, but was more depressing later when his is the single coffin on the Normandy's lower deck. Much better if you save everyone.

Also Gears 2

when Dom has to shoot his wife
This, Thane was one of my favorites, and I thought that, because hes cold blooded he wouldn't mind it, and if I put legion in there his circuits or something might get fried (mordin is a little ***** so it goes without saying that I didn't consider him)

He made it through without any problems only to...
..get a rocket to the face

Most depressing and most FUUUUUUUU- moment, EVAR!

Not really depressing but the "California" stranger mission in RDR was kinda sad

You meet this guy who's determined to make it to California because it's been a dream of his family since his grandparents emigrated from Europe. You bump into him a few times and each time he's getting progressively worse.Eventually you find him dead and if you search his body you find a letter.Reading the letter it turns out he left his wife and child in order to follow this dream but it's gotten to the point where he didn't even know why he was doing it anymore and he's telling his family he's sorry and that he loves them. The final act of the mission is posting the letter to his wife

Gears of war 2 had a few depresssing moments, when carmine died that was sad but not as bad as when you find Tai all messed up and its like its ok Tai we're gonna get you outta here and he shoots himself :( and if it ends out the cowboy Izzy died while he gets in that fight with scourge offscreen that would be super depressing (he was like the coolest character)
Dizzy survives. If you read the novel "Jacinto's Remnant" Dizzy turns up and says that Tai saved him by taking on Skorge single handed so Dizzy could escape.I'd expect him to show up at some point in Gears 3.

I'll say Red Dead Redemption because nothing worked out for anybody in the end. One of the most nihilistic endings to a story in any medium.

I get kinda depressed at any point in any give 4x/grand strategy when I see my lands burning, the people enslaved and all my plans go up in smoke. There is a certain variety of terror that creeps in when you know you are fighting a loosing battle. I guess most people stop playing when they know that they're going to lose, but I revel in the glory of going down with my people.

Yes, this.

For my choice, it's Klonoa: Door to Phantomile.

EDIT: I've been ninja'd!

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One- Brooklyn dying is the saddest thing I will ever see in my entire life.
I just stared at his body for like an hour, hoping it was just a glitch he died.

Flyyn from BF:BC2 dying. The worst part was when he was talking about his karma balance. You welcome for the smokes brother :'(

Mass Effect 3, and it's not even close. And I'm not talking about how "bad" the ending was (though that sucked too). I'm talking about...

...Shepard dying.

I'd been expecting it to happen all along and it still hit me like a kick in the guts - and I think it would have done regardless of how good/bad the ending was.

There were also a number of other similarly depressing moments througout the game, like...

Mordin dying, obviously. Thane too (though to a lesser extent, as I never really engaged with his character to the same degree). And Anderson dying. OMG, Anderson dying. I'm feeling a bit down now just thinking about it, and it's months later.

A few:

The Thousand years of Dreams from Lost Odyssey, many of them just end poorly for everyone involved, hell Kaim just seems to attract tragedy.

Majora's Mask has a overall depressing atmosphere but the mask deaths really get me.Especially the Deku Butler's son who is still dead despite the other two mask givers where ok.

Xion, just Xion. A clone hated by almost everyone in Organization XIII who was never truly a member and forces Roxas, her only friend, to destroy her. The very last part where he fights Riku and she slowly fades out of has memories is heartbreaking

Mass Effect 3 has them in spades..and not "that obvious thing"

I mean when you see the weight of the universe is just crushing everything..NPC's you heard talking are most likley dead later..nowhere is safe..it just feels hopeless

Both endings of inFamous 2 are really depressing.

Especially the 'good' one, where Cole dies!
what really got me was...

[spoiler/]Quo....poor Quo....yeah she turned against you but when she just breaks down in the end you know she desperate and at her wits end

in fact I love how the game flipped things around like that [/spoiler]
