to be honest with all the half decent to really good SP games out this year..I dont think so, I mean yeah there is a trend for games to have some kind of multi, but still if its good then yo get a decent single player

because you cant run the entire industry on online death matches

mabye the d-souls might be the future direction....but mabye not

because (and its fucking beyond me why some cant understand this) MULTIPLAYER IS NOT BETTER THAN SINGLE PLAYER its a different thing altogether

yes IGN "duuurrr duuuurrr ONLINE MULTIPLAYER!" Im looking at you

So if portal 2 was valve's last single player game then have they officially given up on half life?
the article in question was incredibly vague...I thinkt he direction they were talking about was less COD and more dark souls/co-op

my only concern with this direction if is for what ever reason you want to go single player you feel like your doing it wrong

Eh, sorta. Not really, but there's evidence. Exhibit A: Online All-The-Time DRM. You know one of the main reasons I like singleplayer gaming? I can play without being online, a luxury not provided with multiplayer games. But apparently game companies have nothing but contempt for me and my neanderthalic not-having-a-perfect-internet-connection ways.

Exhibit B: Single-player franchises moving towards multiplayer. Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed. Two big singleplayer games that went multiplayer. And I reckon' this illustrates a problem with this industry, the idea that a lack of multiplayer is a bad thing. No, it's just a different thing. This idea is so ridiculous, imagine if you saw a review for the latest 50 Cent album and noticed they had criticised it for not including folk music. It would be absurd! But this is exactly what keeps happening with games!

Though don't get too hysterical now, some companies do recognize that single-player isn't the devil and that success can be made without multiplayer.

Edit: Without wishing to derail, I will point out that I think the industry is moving away from local multiplayer. More and more games come out that have no local multiplayer, forcing you to have to play online or do a system linkup.
however the thing with assasins creed brotherhood was this it was very clear (well to me at least) that the multi was a nice little extra, they certainly didnt skimp on the single player (my only complaint in regards to that was that it was "assasins creed 2, 2.0")

as for ME3, however that turns out I have no doubts they wont half ass the single player, they *should* know that thats why people follow Bioware, to turn it into ME3:modern warefare would be like the DA2 situation only a million times worse...good bye biowares fans

aslo considering there have been plenty of well selling AAA SP games....nah Im hopeful

2 things. First, this would be better with a poll. Second, they're not moving, they've moved. Ever since Halo and Call of Duty and the death of the arcade, online multiplayer is the way to make your money now.
...hmmm I wouldn't call it just yet

as everyone has said

1. lots of games this year that have a focus on single player

2. there have been big single player games that have sold well/been really popular, and to be honest I dont see multi infecting too many games "that" badly aside from the FPS genre, and aside from those two franchises you mentioned

3. no matter whats popular or not theres always going to be demand, you cant compare the experience of the multi in Dead space 2 to the single player, multiplayer is different NOT better, even if the fucktards at IGN cant seem to understand that

Right now I'm playing Dark Souls. On Tuesday I'll be playing Arkham City. In November and beyond I'll be playing Skyrim. After that, I'll pick up Rage.

No, I don't think single player is being abandoned any more than PCs are being abandoned.

Not really, but I am a bit tired of them putting multiplayer in pretty much every single game. Even in those where it seems pointless.

Doesn't matter though since I still get an awesome single player game, but they mess with my trophies/achievements!

I don't mind it at all. I sort of see a trend with multiplayer features being in games more often, but only with certain genres, most notably, FPS's. If the multiplayer is executed well, I won't mind it at all and might even enjoy it.

Borderlands' co-op is just fun as hell. In fact, it's a lot more fun with other people with you for the ride than in single player, and the single player and multiplayer are joined, so you don't have create different characters for online and offline. You can go online for 5 levels, go offline and play for 5 more levels, and jump back online with no problems. The game is still difficult and manages to provide a challenge, as long as you aren't overleveled.

I have only ever played one multi-player game (Assassin's Creed for those interested... which your not!)
I don't have anything against multi-player games, they just hold no interest for me, but I think there are plenty of high quality games out there for both parties, those who want to play with millions around the world (that sounded weird!) and those that don't!

It seems companies are now beginning to abandon single player. Talk of Portal 2 being the last single player focused type of game from Valve. Blizzard's single player mode is basically to play an MMO by yourself. I would have preferred KOTOR III to another damn MMO and I would have preferred Age of Empires 4 to the Age of Empires Online.

Do you think that if this keeps up, you will lose interest in gaming in the near future?
Let's see, just starting with what you mentioned there.

If Valve doesn't do any more Singleplayer games, I'd hardly care, Portal one and two are the only singleplayer from them I like, don't care at all for Half Life. I can imagine a lot of pissed of people if the don't release episode 3 soon or ever though :p

Blizzards single player is to play an MMO by yourself? You've never played their RTS games or Diable have you? Diablo has always been a great singleplayer game and their RTS games have always had a good campaign, heck Starcraft 2 has the best RTS campaign ever and we're getting more of that...

KOTOR 3 might have been nice, but having played SWTOR (beta a while back), all the story in there should be enough for people wanting singleplayer, I personally never cared much for the raids or pvp in MMOs anyway but SWTOR have a lot of reasons to play it anyway.
And it's not like Bioware will stop making great Singleplayer games any time soon.

Everything since Age of Empires 2 have been crap and the campaign was never very fun in those games anyway...

All in all...
We have studios like Bioware and Bethesda creating great singleplayer only games (there is obsidian too but not quite as good).
We have games like Batman: Arkham City and Assassins Creed (any title) coming out.
The Battlefield series having had singleplayer campaigns added in recent years.
Call of Duty doesn't look like they are going to stop having singleplayer any times soon, an neither does any other games.

I don't see any companies abandoning singleplayer, if anything we've been getting more and better singleplayer the last few years...

these days I think Bioware wants to make either MMO's or dating sims.
I give to you ..... Star Wars the Old Republic.

An upcoming MMO from Bioware in which you can find a date or date one of your NPC team if that tickles your pickle.

I dont dislike multiplayer in games as long as the game has a substantial single player mode, and whilst games where the single player campaign is pushed aside and multiplayer is the focus are becoming more common there are still single player games out there. for me the problem is the change from local to online multiplayer, when i have friends round I have to sort through my games to try and find something that i can play splitscreen and out of my 15 or so games only Halo and Gears of War let me play this. I own Burnout Paradise which I enjoy playing online but it is not possible to have a local game unless playing the "party mode" which is pretty awful (it involves players taking it in turns to drive for less than a minute and get x amount of drift etc), the only reason that i bought this game was the fun that came with offline multiplayer in burnout 3. Sadly it has gotten to the point that when friends come over I put away my 360 and dig out the PS2. So what i want to see in the future is more local multiplayer in games

agreed, why is it that when I do want to play AC multiplayer there's no-one else there, and then when you do get a game it crashes!?!

Companies will go where the money is. There's more money in online micro-transactions, map packs and multiplayer expansion packs than there is in churning out a single player game every couple of years.
