Decent combat, and if there was a single-player mode.
Out of all the times I've done online gaming, most of the players were jerks. Since humanity is only becoming more jerky by the moment, I won't be gaming online again soon.

Not having to pay to play with mediocre gameplay?

I think having to pay to play the game you bought is wrong, ten bucks a month on Xbox live for every game you get is one thing, thirty bucks a month for one average game is another.

I just don't find them immersible enough and I don't usually like playing anything other then vs modes with other people.

It would take a coherent and interesting story where I feel legitimatly involved and want to continue seeing it through. But then, the story would have to end, wouldn't it? And then why keep playing? The reason I lose interest in MMOs is that I don't find there's any driving factor to continue playing. I never feel really invested in the world, or the NPCs in it. Make an enticing one with a new interesting story to see through every week and then we'll talk.

I want a game like Planetside to come around again and not fail.
But, the cynic in me knows communities make games. And these days every new MMO's community is made up of 80% WoW refugees who feel like constantly referring to it rather than the game they're playing, and also making horrible irrelevant comparisons. So, what do developers do? They cater to these morons. So, nothing new or innovative ever comes to what originally looks promising in an MMO. Swimming in a sea of WoW clones because the amazing interwebs demands it.

Incentive to actually play and work towards a goal is nice, too. Global Agenda lacks this entirely. I find myself not even logging in somedays (reinstalled and played Fallout 3 today instead). And the game is only a little over a month old.

That's about it though. Innovation and incentive. Devs, get to workin'. And here's hoping APB is good, because I swear if EA messes this one up as well, I'm done. Done.

I'm not really a fan of the people who turn MMO's into a job of sorts. The "to be in our club you must be on between these time and if you cant get on you must have a note from your doctor. You must also do absolutely everything we tell you to do while your on with no back chat." types...

Huge areas. I mean LIKE HUGE areas, areas that take up from hours or two to explore and lots of this.
Combat system of more than just button mashing and with a touch or realism in it. Example Left click to attack with sword and Right to block with shield. ( I know this kind of system is hard but it would be cool. )
Levels wouldn't matter. a mastery system of like, you use some spells more and "study" them you get better in it. And you wouldn't need to level to level "God-fucking-nine-billon" to explore the hard semi-endgame or endgame content, You could enter these areas, but depending on your character skills and player skills. ( I know this sounds weird and odd but meh... I would something like this)
Something that players would be actively part of. Great fights and events.
LESS PVP FOCUS AND MORE PVE FOCUS. (If you are PvP fan move along please)
Minimal UI and not really a total indicator of HP and mana.
Strenght shouldn't consist total of gear. Gear would be good thing but having Common item and "using" it right would be better and shiny EPiX.

Thise are just few points, but I got lot of more (Stupid) Ideas that are just a escapist dreams.
And I'm on class so... Eh... You know...

A Star Wars MMO made by BioWare. Like The Old Republic.
This may just be enough.
It's enough for me. I thought I would never play an MMO then BioWare announced The Old Republic and said stuff like, "It's fully voiced.", "It's story heavy.", "You can play the entire game single player." They convinced me.

An Elder Scrolls MMO. That's what it would take.
lol first reply = win immediately

Then again i wouldn't put too much worth in what people say. I knew a single player die hard who said we could saw of is leg with a rusty chainsaw if he ever started playing wow...

He started playing wow....

Or is this, in fact, possible?

Reason I ask is because many folks who know me know that I almost never play online under any circumstances and if I am venturing into a game's multiplayer sphere it's a challenge match with a good friend.

Still, I take a look at what the MMO crowd is doing and sometimes think "well, if they made the right game..." If Elder Scrolls Online came out I'd at least look at it. Ditto Fallout Online. And if they made EVE On Earth (something like what Pirates of the Burning Sea should've been, with a player-driven economy straight out of Puzzle Pirates' playbook, still the best economic model I've ever seen in any game, single- or multiplayer), I'd seriously consider ponying up to play it.

How 'bout you folks? What would it take to get you playing online (if you don't already, that is)? And multiplayer gamers---any suggestions for me based on the tastes I've outlined and what little you may otherwise know about games I like?
Diablo III is what it would take for me to play an MMO. Until that time happens, I avoid them like the plague. I also know technically it's not an MMO, but it's as close as I'm going to get. MMO's have had their day imo, and before you ask, no I'm not remotely interested in the old republic.

Basically a huge FPS where you're skill is the main factor in your survival. However with latency issues, it would take a super-awesome internet for me to play MMO's.

Pretty much. I don't feel like spending my hard-earned money on monthly subscriptions to games that end up with me partying with idiots or jerkwads. I'm much happier paying once for a game (like TF2... which was actually a gift, come to think of it), and enjoying myself.

Reasons I don't play MMO's:

1. Monthly Subscriptions
- I will not pay monthly for a game. Sorry, but I'm not that rich. I know there's free MMO's like Guild Wars which I have tried but there are other reasons besides the money, such as:
2. I hate people online
- The majority of people online I found are spambots, teabaggers, l33t5pe@ker5, or 12 years old and it just got annoying
3. Combat
- Most MMO combat is based on a Point, Click, and Queue system which I just can't stand. I really hate the idea of not being able to add my own personal skill to a game, such as something as simple as AIMING. Simple clicking and queuing my next 25 attacks and waiting for them to render is just not fun for me.

If you can name me an MMO that is free to play online, where people aren't completely immature on every server, and where combat is real time, then by all means, let me know and I will play it.
