OK. I'm needed to take care my girlfriend's bro while she's gone from the house. Problem is, that he has ADHD. It's not really severe, but it does cause some problems, according to her. I never really sitted someone before, but I am a lifeguard so i may have some expertise in this field, but I'm not sure whether i can handle this without some advice. Got any tips and hints for me?

Video games, it'll keep him seated and not busy at all. Just make sure it's age appropriate.

Yeah, I'd be an awful parent.

Well, it probably won't make too much of a difference, just don't act scared, and try to keep him interested.

If you can, give him a good ol' videogame, because that could work.

ADHD people aren't difficult to 'sit', as it were. One of my close friends from my old school has ADHD, and Asperger's Syndrome, and he was perfectly fine. Just had a bit of trouble with social situations. Just treat the guy normally, like you would anyone else, and you'll both be fine.

i say you bring a load of games like jenga that you can play for half an hour, and then if he gets bored, do something else.

main problem with adhd kids is that they get tired of things really quickly, and when they get bored, they get agitated, and end up doing stuff to get on your nerves, or worries you like maybe shouting and screaming et c.
best thing to do is keep him entertained to the best of your ability =] just be prepared for the worst, and stock up on things that can entertain you for less than an hour [just no movies, jigsaws, et c.]

i've never been in your position before but i've read a fair bit about adhd...
also, if he's being all hyperactive, best thing to do is go along with it, so he's tired enough to go to sleep early enough =]

Bloody hell ADHD isn't that bad. Most you might get from a sever case is violence and a quick temper at the slightest thing. Sounds more like all you need to do is stay calm, make sure you know the rules that are in place for him and thats basically it. If he starts getting annoyed or violent then just walk away as best as you can (never a good idea to get physical back with them). No point using threats either as they dont work.
As already mentioned, get him into games that he enjoys. If he gets bored fast then ask him what he wants to do and if its safe and simple to do then do that. Think of ideas such as Hangman and that game where you have to act out a word. These should keep him entertained.

Oh and this is coming from a ADHD sufferer who also has friends who are ADHD, belive me, i was a horror when i was younger and hated sharing things so thats another thing to watch out for...

Play some video games with him, listen to him, see what he wants to do. Do it if it's not "I want to break all of the lights".

Also, have alot of easy simple games to play, and you might have to make up some because you might burn through them, however you said he has mild ADHD, so it should be ok. Just prepare for the worst (which wont likely happen).

Ah, ADHD.
You know, I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 12.
Want to know the test?
They make you sit in a room and answer questions about a story that as interesting as a wet cardboard box.
The only reason that they have that is to give kids pointless medication that isn't needed.
I'm 18, and I function fine without medication.
I know people that have EXTREME ADHD, and they do need to take medication, but when they don't take medication, they're just hyper and usually jump from game to game.

Really, don't worry.
Just play some games or something with them and you should be fine.
If you're worried about the hyper part (which you shouldn't be, but it's fine) then avoid sugar.

This is what it's all about. (Yes, I have a pretty broad brush when it comes to defining a person's... issues.)

Treat the kid like any other kid, and keep them busy, just like you'd have to sitting a 'normal' kid. Honestly, a lot of diagnoses of 'mild' ADHD are really parents looking for an excuse for why they can't control their kids.

Lock him in a closet.

OT: How old he is he?

Assuming he's young, you should probably ask her what his favorite TV show is, and put it on.

Failing that, keep him occupied so he doesn't get bored.

ADHD seems to be terribly over prescribed to anyone who's a bit hyperactive, although there are probably some more unbalanced children out there it's another case of the 'victim society' fad which is so brilliantly popular at the moment, so I cant imagine it'll be particularly taxing for you.
