I guess my question is, why didn't they just make Dark Souls 3 if they were going to make a game that literally plays identical to it? I mean, from the way the character climbs ladder to the way it picks up items... its all the same...
Because Sony gave them money to make this, so they did. The real question is less "why didn't they make Dark Souls 3?" and more "why didn't they make Demons Souls 2." I guess Sony wanted them to make an exclusive game in the vein of the souls series and From wanted to do a new IP. Makes sense.

Also, seriously, how many different ways are there to climb a ladder?

Looks decent and since I don't use shields in the souls games it shouldn't be too big a change in gameplay for me. Although it looks like the dodges have insane iframes on them. Could almost make it too easy?

That said I think I just may be all soul'd out for now. Can't even bring myself to play the dlc. When is this coming out?

On a separate note, to those complaining about the lock on. It's not like you have to use it you know, you can just like ... not. use. it? What's the problem here?

Yeah. Bloodborne is made in collaboration with Sony Japan Studios so that adds a lot of benefit for From, who can now solely focus on what its good at(world building, level design, gameplay mechanics etc.) while Japan Studios handles all the engine stuff.

I mean, I really liked Dark Souls 2 but its also a product of what happens when a relatively small developer divides its limited resources over too many assets. I think its one of the reasons why it was lacking in some regards. Bloodborne might be an exclusive but just like Dark Souls after Demon's Souls I think the collaboration with Japan Studios will be once again invaluable for From for any future non-exclusive titles/Bloodborne-esque sequels.

And from that(just look at Dark Souls) everyone will benefit. :p

Holy cow. I think the most intriguing thing in this whole trailer, to me, is the friendly/neutral guy who shows up during the bit with the werewolves. This game is gonna be awesome.

Looks fine I am mildly interested but not hype Demons Souls was a breath of fresh air Dark Souls while better in many areas (not all) didnt feel anywhere near as fresh it felt like I had been there and done that already I still enjoyed it but it did not endear itself to me in the same way, havent even bothered with Dark Souls 2.

Im going to wait on this one I suspect I will get it at some point but whether thats on release or a few years later is undecided atm.

But the sound assets are exactly the same...

I hope this is an early build, because it just looks like Dark Souls, except in a different, more victorian/steampunk setting.

Even the weapons seem a bit dull; considering you now have access to guns and what not, you could at least show off some gunblade stuff or something.

I don't know; it's too early to judge.

Yaaaaaaa...This game will be the reason I get a PS4...hands down. An upgraded Dark Souls game with a heavier aspect on offense in a victorian setting? Day one purchase plz....

To be honest, at the moment it looks like a Souls game, minus the customisation. The character has two morphing weapons, a gun and a mêlée weapon, one of which can be switched out for a torch. If that's all there is then this for me would be a big step down in the range of options available in the previous games of the series for your character and what was one of the big drawing points for me to the game.

At the moment it seems like it's just the UI and core mechanics that remain, less all of the other things that put the Souls games high up on my list to play and replay. Slightly worrying, but maybe I'm just needlessly prejudging.

Gotta love gamers: game I don't like gets a sequel "whhaaa no creativity greedy devs all games the same the industry is dying" game I do like gets reskin sequel "OMG MAH PENIS IS HARD".

OT: Well that looks like... um... Dark Souls. I like souls so I'm interested, but I can't get hyped for something so familiar. The lack of a shield is concerning, and that gun looks 100% fucking useless. Really the deciding factor for me will be whether its balanced around sane game design, or the community's masochistic obsession with meaningless difficulty("its not a good boss if it takes less than five deaths to beat it" is an actual opinion that I have seen, and that worries me).
Demon Souls and Dark Souls are separate IPs. It is not a sequel to Dark Souls.

Its a dark souls reskin. There isn't much difference between Quake 4 and Doom 3's gameplay. Nor Bloodborne or Dark souls 2.
And? You get a single iteration of a gameplay type or something? Like 1 shooter, 1 puzzle game, 1 fighter or something? Just because something has been done before doesn't mean its not worth doing. Its like if I said I was never going to pick up a Yakuza again because they all play the same, completely ridiculous.

There are now two dodging options, a dash and a roll. When you're locked on you dash and when you're not locked on you roll. In the demo the guy spent most of the time locked on which is why you didn't see much rolling.
Thank you for the info. Wondering already what differences that will all make, it'll at least I suppose avoid the ridiculous excessive rolling.

Note how I said "there isn't much difference". And not "there is no difference"

If you think a mere change of setting and remodeling of creatures is worth a next-gen console and price of a game. Fine by me.

Truly this is a successor of the souls franchise. The fans are beginning to come out of the woodwork and its not even out yet!

Man, that sure is an impressive Dark Souls mod.

Almost looks like professional work.

Shame they couldn't mod out the clumsy lock-on system that buries the camera in the boss's armpit hair while you try to step on his toes.
don't get why you would ever want to lock on to an enemy that big but if you want to then by all means go a head.

Here's a break down of the gameplay trailer from EpicNameBro.

He pointed out some stuff that I totally missed, like the giant spider. Also some interesting insight into the mechanics on display as well as some of the balancing aspects and the fact that the previews may be tuned to make them much easier than the final game will be.

Looks pretty good to me. I like the fact that the combat doesn't look quite so reliant on hiding behind shields (be honest, no one is good enough at Dark Souls on their first run to need to be blocking most of the time)

Is this related to Dark Souls story-wise (I'm thinking of Marvellous Chester from the Artorias of the Abyss who looks like he could have lived here)

I'm hoping the environments aren't all along the lines of grotty backstreets in Victorian London (especially since the enemy variety looks impressive) and I hope to God that this doesn't stay a PS4 exclusive. Fuck exclusivity! I want to play this!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloodborne

Sony Japan Studio is helping its development and is publishing it. The odds of it going multiplat as a result is as good as Demon Soul's odds. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon's_Souls

Not saying its impossible of course as ultimately anything is, but the chance is so tiny you shouldn't even consider it possible.

I give any game a chance. At least there doesn't appear to be shields so the shield controls won't suck. There looks to be actual stealth, actual enemy AI. The lock-on systems are inherently limiting, I don't understand why From doesn't join the rest of us back when lock-on became archaic. There looks to be a possible juggling mechanic at play. The game seems a lot more fun and challenging than Dark Souls ever was.
Except if I recall correctly, one of your bigger complaints about how Dark Souls is a bad RPG is something about how combat is all about the stats and weapons, with no focus on abilities. Just your rb/lb actions and your rt/lt actions.

Bloodborne doesnt look like it's changing that at all,
I wouldn't care much if Dark Souls was a poor RPG if the combat was fun as you fight more than anything in the game, thus if the fighting is enjoyable, most of the game will be. Bloodborne already has more moves and abilities than Dark Souls in just those 6 minutes. The dash move obviously, you can have a gun and melee weapon at the same time, there looks to be potential juggling, and there looks to be at least some kind of stealth. There doesn't seem to be blocking, which is GREAT because it means the combat is more skill-based (thus harder). The main reason I dislike Dark Souls is because of the horrible shield controls; if Bloodborne has no shields, then there are no shield controls. Dark Souls was just so boring and repetitive combat-wise, all you had to do was block and then attack after (even as a thief/rogue). The only thing that gave Dark Souls any difficulty was how far apart the checkpoints are. Play any other game that's considered normal or easy difficulty like Tomb Raider or Uncharted and make the checkpoints the same as Dark Souls and both those games would be harder than Dark Souls.

Help, help! I'm drowning in the atmosphere! I'm interested to see how this turns out. I'm just hoping there's a little more variety in the environments than just decrepit gothic city at night.

The official Japanese site has been updated with new info(courtesy of Dualshockers) :

http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/08/21/ps4-exclusive-bloodborne-gets-lots-of-new-info-on-characters-enemies-gameplay-weapons-and-locations/

The gameplay footage we saw was apparently from the Cathedral district, but on the official page there are also a few cool screenshots from the Cemetery district(those crows look nasty. :p)

Also in the cemetery: ''What lurks under the earth?''
