Ska just sounds like punk to me.
It does these days, but the original stuff sounded more like Reggae. Check out the Skatalittes or Desmond Decker sometime :)

Doesn't mean I don't like it, I just don't like how 10 different names are made for the same-sounding genre. (Not just ska either, I'm talking music in general).
Ok, lets go to school shall we?

Punk: Anti-establishment music, done mostly with 2 Electric guitars, a bass and drums. Vocals are usually more nasal or shouted. Usually more raw, and much harsher than...

Ska: Big on the reggae influence, that, along with the same instrumentation as punk, also utilizes things like a brass section, sometimes woodwind. The music is more toned back, less "harsh" or "raw" (mostly. That's not to say there isn't quite a bit of ska that really does utilize more punk overtones).

*looks on his ipod*
- Froglegs
- The Kingpins
- Laurel Aitken (the Godfather of Ska!!!)
- Les Travailleurs de la Nuit
- Los Tres Puntos
- The Madness
- Mr. Review
- New York Ska Jazz Ensemble
- Rotterdam Ska Jazz Foundation (this and the former might not be a specific band though)
- Skalariak
- Skatoon Syndikat
- The Specials
- Ya Basta

Special mention goes to ASPO [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2XAYxzEQBU] (About Some Precious Oldies). This band's got both male and female singers by the way, the girl is absolutely awesome.

Obviously Streetlight Manifesto, I've been listening to all their albums daily for about half a year now. That doesn't happen very often.

"Big D & the Kids' Table" have some really nice songs with Shining On [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8oM_-K9rXY] being the most known one. Also, "The Planet Smashers" is a very good but not well known skaband. Songs like Blind [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyMubC9vgPc] are lovely to listen to. I'm mostly a fourth-wave-ska (if you want to call it like that) fan though, and I generally go for modern or progressive ska - the old waves have some great bands, but it's all not really my deal.

I think mostly the language matters. 'Doe Maar' is a decent and famous Dutch ska band, if you care to give that a try.

Is that ska? What is ska?!
Ska is a combination of elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the offbeat.
