As much as this "young'un" does enjoy bands like Toots or The Selecter *ahem* on a regular basis, he has always thought that when another "young'un" comes and asks for suggestions based on his liking of the 3rd wave, belittling this preference/introduction to the genre and touting various old and largely forgotten thus obscure bands to our generation comes off as needlessly pretentious. If he really, really likes ska, he'll get there eventuallyRhomCo said:Hmmmm... no:
The Selector
Bad Manners
Desmond Dekker
Prince Buster
Laurel Aitken
Toots & the Maytals
Judge Dread
The Ethiopians
and no fucking Voodoo Glowskulls
I hope it's just because most of you are young'uns.
I've been listening to Streelight manifesto since I sound this thread. I'm loving it.jmoore4ska said:Three: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHxEijSG7fgSneaklemming said:Ok wuts, ska, and can you link to a good youtube vid so i can get a sense of it?

Some good ska bands from 2nd wave to recent 3rd from a quick search.
Oh, i forgot to mention one band before when i was rambling. Mephiskapheles. It just don't get no better.
Hmmmmmm...perhaps that explains their music video for "We Will Fall Together" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27xERqR0-Sw] !Sneaklemming said:I think the best way I like to describe it is that it sounds like what would have happened had ye olde pirates survived up to the jazz era and continued writing songs. =P
As i recall, the fellow who helped us record our CD did some touring with Bim Skala Bim with his band Otis Reem. Definitely some early No Doubt, as well.JdaS said:Also a very good band is Bim Skala Bim. Incidentally one of the best names for a ska band ever along such gems as Skabba the Hutt and The Good Skamaritans.
Haha cool video. It's good to know I'm not mishearing things =Pjmoore4ska said:Hmmmmmm...perhaps that explains their music video for "We Will Fall Together" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27xERqR0-Sw] !Sneaklemming said:I think the best way I like to describe it is that it sounds like what would have happened had ye olde pirates survived up to the jazz era and continued writing songs. =P

I wasn't belittling it, I was actually surprised several of the bands I mentioned hadn't already gained mention.JdaS said:belittling this preference/introduction to the genre
Fair enough. Still, it doesn't really surprise me since they rarely get mentioned (1st anyway) at places dedicated to music, let alone a site like this.RhomCo said:I wasn't belittling it, I was actually surprised several of the bands I mentioned hadn't already gained mention.
So sad, so true. But most importantly: "Finnish Skacore bands of the 90s" Seriously? Did you check my nationality or was this just a crazy coincidence? What bands would these be?RhomCo said:German White Power ska bands (Yay! let's ignore the roots of the music entirely! Go team idiot!)
Crazy coincidence. As for what bands, I'd have to go dig through some boxes and see if the burns my mate did for me were ever labelled... and that is just effort.JdaS said:So sad, so true. Figured as much. All I know about the local stuff are like 3 or 4 bands. One of them is pretty awesome in fact. The Valkyrians. I really liked how they brought back the older style, 2nd wave mostly. The singer totally rips off Judge Dread though.RhomCo said:snip
oh wow, free ska? that like the best thing ever. but yeah, i'd recomend to anyone to go see a ska band, no matter who's playing or who they are, just because they're so much fun to see live.AboveUp said:I saw these guys live some time ago for free here in the Netherlands. One of the better nights out I've had. Such a fun band to see live.lolmynamewastaken said:mustard plug
