As much as this "young'un" does enjoy bands like Toots or The Selecter *ahem* on a regular basis, he has always thought that when another "young'un" comes and asks for suggestions based on his liking of the 3rd wave, belittling this preference/introduction to the genre and touting various old and largely forgotten thus obscure bands to our generation comes off as needlessly pretentious. If he really, really likes ska, he'll get there eventually ;)

I've been listening to Streelight manifesto since I sound this thread. I'm loving it.

Consider me a new convert!

I think the best way I like to describe it is that it sounds like what would have happened had ye olde pirates survived up to the jazz era and continued writing songs. =P

Also a very good band is Bim Skala Bim. Incidentally one of the best names for a ska band ever along such gems as Skabba the Hutt and The Good Skamaritans.

Hmmmmmm...perhaps that explains their music video for "We Will Fall Together" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27xERqR0-Sw] !

As i recall, the fellow who helped us record our CD did some touring with Bim Skala Bim with his band Otis Reem. Definitely some early No Doubt, as well.

Haha cool video. It's good to know I'm not mishearing things =P

Actually after listening to the other videos I'd only attribute the "pirate" sound to the Streetlight Manifesto

I wasn't belittling it, I was actually surprised several of the bands I mentioned hadn't already gained mention.

I did miss adding Citizen Fish to list, them being my all time fave ska-punk outfit (even above Choking Victim/Leftover Crack) which was an oversight on my part.

Of course if I was going to be an elitist, pretentious prick I'd have started listing Aussie ska bands, German White Power ska bands (Yay! let's ignore the roots of the music entirely! Go team idiot!) and Finnish Skacore bands of the 90s... and just to be an outright prick, a few Skacid artists.

Fair enough. Still, it doesn't really surprise me since they rarely get mentioned (1st anyway) at places dedicated to music, let alone a site like this.

So sad, so true. But most importantly: "Finnish Skacore bands of the 90s" Seriously? Did you check my nationality or was this just a crazy coincidence? What bands would these be?

Crazy coincidence. As for what bands, I'd have to go dig through some boxes and see if the burns my mate did for me were ever labelled... and that is just effort.

Figured as much. All I know about the local stuff are like 3 or 4 bands. One of them is pretty awesome in fact. The Valkyrians. I really liked how they brought back the older style, 2nd wave mostly. The singer totally rips off Judge Dread though.

I'm not too big on Ska, but i LOVE reggae, so naturally there's some Ska that i do like. I enjoy Sublime quite a lot.

Recently a friend got me onto Streetlight Manifesto. I really enjoy the music, but the vocals grate after a while.

Big D and the Kids Table are pretty good too.

I like two local bands the best, you can find them on myspace or on CBC radio 3 online.. they are The Royal Winnipeg Porn Orchestra which is real hick style ska, and Subcity (or Subcity Dwellers), which are a much heavier ska band. Both really awesome and great to listen to.

If you live in Canada, you should check out the Subcity Dwellers' myspace page for tour dates. Usually just 5-10 bucks to get in. Such a good time.

I saw these guys live some time ago for free here in the Netherlands. One of the better nights out I've had. Such a fun band to see live.
oh wow, free ska? that like the best thing ever. but yeah, i'd recomend to anyone to go see a ska band, no matter who's playing or who they are, just because they're so much fun to see live.
(that sentence made sense before i started typing it.)
