I decided to take up learning morse code recently. I'm not likely to ever need to use morse code and I only know one other person that can use it, but I decided to take it up because it seems kinda fun. Has anyone else ever decided to learn a skill that will be of little to no use to them? For the fun of it, because you were forced, however it came about. What useless thing can you do?

Well, morse code is a good thing to know if you are ever in certain kinds of emergency situations for example. Rescue personnel, military, people involved in extreme sports, etc. all have an incentive to learn alternative methods of communication.

I was always good at blacksmith's puzzles, never thought I'd find any use at all for that particular skill. (intertwined pieces of iron or steel, you have to twist and turn the things to find a way to get them apart) Then I started working as a farm mechanic. Ended up rescuing goats from various fence lines, often on multiple occasions. They'd stick their head through to nibble at something on the far side, then their horns get stuck when pulling back. They then almost invariably proceed to bend and twist the metal while struggling to get free, often just making it worse.

The ironic bit is that they're much smarter than most of the other animals I deal with...

I'm thinking of training up my left hand, just so I can tell people I'm abidextrous. Really, aside from bragging rights, and barring a freak accident where I lose my right hand, it's not that useful.

Learning how to make stuff with redstone in minecraft. Can't imagine that skill's gonna come in useful.
Was good at a bunch of things in WoW, that really don't help me in RL :p.

So yeah... quite a few of my skills related to gaming are not entirely useful :p

Over an afternoon i taught myself to wiggle my ears. Not useful, but fun to do.
I can do that too, it tends to creep people out & that can be very useful...

well, technically speaking, if you take any real circuits class, some of that could potentially help you there. I studied for my first computer organization and architecture test by trying to construct a 1-bit cpu in minecraft.

I can't really say I learn "useless skills," since almost anything, applied the right way, can be very useful, as with the example above. Unless you include ways to optimize in DND, but even that can be useful, since I DM alot. It's all about perspective.

I'm not a hardware person and unlikely to ever be :p Always been much more interested in coding than creating the stuff to code on ^^

I know how to make hand-made chain armor. I loop metal wire around a bar using a handheld drill as a crank and a Dremel to cut the resulting spring into the little metal fruit loops, but after that it's just me and a pair of needle-nose pliers doing metal crochet.

I used to be able to finish Megaman X4 in about an hour (with all secrets, of course). I trained to do that, but eventually I stopped because it doesn't really serve any purpose.

I tried to learn Morse code as well. It didn?t go over too well for me. Useless skills I have include: soap making, spinning yarn, and flower arranging.

Well, the yarn spinning isn?t really useless... for me at least. I do love knitting.

Soap making? That's an odd one, how did that come about?

I doubt I'll ever be in one of those situations, but if I ever get to use it I will feel absolutely awesome!

Blacksmith's puzzles sound cool, and fantastic that you actually got some use out of it. Poor goats :(

It was for a chemistry class.

I can read Latin, it's not as useless today as morse code but it's not going to get me a job. It is kind of fun to play games and see the random use of Latin words in them though.
