I can understand not liking it (it's not my favorite), but eye sore? Come on.
No, you come on. I think it's a horrible design. I despise the white open spaces, and the ads are quite prominent. Are you going to pretend I'm unfair because my initial reaction was one of "That's freaking awful?"

If you go to the "View" menu, you can select "Compact view", which gives you one window with your contacts, and another with the other stuff. Close the other window and it doesn't reappear when you restart skype.
I think I'll continue to not use their client, instead. I haven't particularly had a need to use it, so being able to switch views isn't exactly a big stroke in its favour.

However, the "be fair" thing was based on an image. and a question as to how that was awful. That specific image.

Nope. I'd LOVE to change, but they won't.

Their reasoning is irrelevant. The point is that I'd love to change and even know which client I'd choose, but I cannot for a reason that you didn't list.

Also, they won't change because they see no reason to. Lucky them.
That's fine. I understood that from your fist post.

However, their reasoning, in this case, is relevant. Even if your reason to not switch is other users' unwillingness to change, the core cause of that unwillingness stems from someone either not knowing of the alternatives or not wanting change.

That's what I was getting at.

I just avoid Microsoft products like the devil at this point. Though, as the owner of a touch screen laptop, the flat shapes make objects much easier to use with touch. But I'm well aquainted with the escapist's view on touch screens [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.856237-Superior-technology-that-you-dislike-or-find-inferior#21211721]

Oh yea, and the black(-and-primary-colors)-on-white color schemes of web sites. Who the fuck thought of that bullshit? The web is not newspaper. At least the Escapist allows me to change the background to something less bright.
There are browser plugins for "night mode" which lets you view webpages in a dark color pallet. I feel the same way. Unless my device is in bright sunlight like my phone, I avoid light themes whenever I can. It annoys me how Microsoft cock blocks 3rd party themes so I can't change the Windows explorer color pallet to something dark without doing a bunch of bullshit

Or you could just....you know....

[HEADING=2]NOT USE SKYPE.[/HEADING]

There are dozens of useful, feature-heavy (or feature-lite, if you prefer), stable, low-footprint, and at times free, VOIP clients out there.

The only reasons to adhere to Skype are ignorance of the options available or an irrational fear of change.
What programs would you recommend? I have an iPad and my mother-in-law has a Kindle Fire and Skype isn't working for us.

I thought the Kindle Fire didn't have a mic. Does she have some peripheral?

Maybe I was mistaken on the model. It might be the HD version, but regardless it is a model with a mic.

The problem with Skype is that it's the IE of online messaging/video programs.

Sure, it sucks, but most people in the work place/family don't know any better and are too lazy/ignorant to learn something better.

Huh. Okay then. She must be using the HDX or something. Anyway...

I'll be honest, I'm not 100% up to speed on what the best VOIP programs are for mobile platforms like the Kindle. Most of my knowledge comes from PC/Linux/Mac platforms and networking. However, a few I do know of might work.

MagicJack's MagicApp is worth a try, though I'm not familiar with the current iteration.

Fring's another good option. It's free (still, s'far as I know) and includes voice, text, and video chat.

Ventrillo and Mumble are also good options, though they're text and voice chat only. Another issue is that they require a server for each client to connect to; though Ventrilo tends to be a bit easier to setup.

As a graphic designer, I feel I must point out to many folks here that there's a difference between a design you don't like and a design that isn't good. A design that isn't good fails to achieve or works against its intended purpose, while a design you don't like is just one that features things that go against your personal sensibilities.

For example, probably 80-90% of billboards in existence are horribly designed. Realtors being the worst offenders--those people couldn't design a good billboard if you threw one at their smug, grinning faces. Billboards are things that most people see from a great distance away, while in motion, and with most of their attention focused on other significantly more important tasks. You simply cannot load down a billboard with a paragraph of information and expect anybody to comprehend it, or even attempt to. Yet so many people--especially realitors--like to put the whole damn company's mission statement up there, PLUS a phone number, PLUS a captioned picture, PLUS their big ass logo. It's just too much, and the visual clutter is going to make people just glance over it.

The maximum number of words you want on a billboard is five, or seven if you REALLY just can't help yourself. But five is really the sweet spot between communicating the information you need and not running away the eye with clutter. However, the best billboards are usually the ones with no words at all.

As much as I hate those billboards that just say the word JESUS in the style of a streetsign, I can appreciate them in that at the very least their creators understand the principles of making a good billboard. They go against my sensibilities, but they're well designed.

Another thing that goes against my sensibilities but is well designed is the JCPenney logo. A while back they got a new CEO and went to this [http://slant.investorplace.com/files/2013/11/jcp-stock-jc-penney-logo.jpg] one, but they went back to their old CEO and so went back to the old one [http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120127045126/logopedia/images/4/45/JCPenney-Logo.png]. I liked the newer one much better--it was a nice little icon, fit with their "fair and square" pricing motto, and just looked newer and fresher. But the old one is certainly not a BAD design: Helvetica is a great font, it's become recognizable as being JCPenney's font, and its simplicity allows it to be used in many ways and situations without their designers having to bend over backwards to make it fit.

So...yeah. Just because you don't like a design doesn't mean it isn't good. And just because you like a design doesn't mean it's good: I keep seeing a desire for color and gradients and 3D effects and the like, and like with billboards you simply can't inundate an interface with a bunch of extraneous crap. Simplicity is most often the master key to usability. Get too much crap in there and the eye doesn't know where to go, and can't differentiate the different sections of information because there's too much color and texture masking the finer details.

Its funny how Skype users are instantly labeled as stupid and/or lazy for not using other clients. Every other VOIP client I've tried has been very disappointing. Teamspeak had REALLY bad sound quality, Mumble just never friggen worked for my friends and I, Ventrillo again had low sound quality, was a pain to get working in the first place, and for whatever reason one of my friends had it crash constantly. Then we tried steam Voice chat and my god THAT is the IE of VOIP. Slow, pain to get groups going, abysmal sound quality, and there's at least a 1-2 second delay on when something was said and when something was heard.

I've tried several others that I can't remember the names of right now, and sure they use less RAM, but half had a delay, the other half had shit sound quality, and a lot of them make it REALLY annoying to set up a group chat.

I use Skype because it works, has good sound quality, is stable (compared to every other client I've tried) its easy to set up groups (just drag & drop)and has a lot of features built in that I like.

I'd like to hear recommendations for a better client and give it a try. If there are better things than skype out there (THAT ACTUALLY HAVE GOOD SOUND QUALITY) I would like to give them a look.
