So heres the story, as we all know DA2 is rather controversional in the gaming industry, some claiming it to be really good while others say its tarnished Biowares reputaion beyond beliefe. I have yet to complete it. For quite a while ive been happy to join in on the bashing using my experience from the demo and what others have told me.
Yet i saw it for £10 in Game and thought if Bioware is(/was) my favourite company the least i can do is give them a chance and play it for the few days before Skyrim comes out.

what are your thoughts on the game?

its not as good as Origins, because you spend the majority of the game stuck in a city. its still a good game though imo.

It's quite a good game, the combat is fun if a bit to easy, the maps are hopelessly recycled (they didn't even bother to edit the mini-maps or remove some doorways), the story also isn't brilliant but overall it's still quite a fun game.

Not the best game in the world mainly due to time constraints, but a nice non-conventional RPG nonetheless. In my opinion, that is.

I think it was pretty good. Not the best game ever, certainly not one of Bioware's best, but it's better than some games in the same genre.

I'm sorry, I stopped reading there. You mean Dragon Age II causes controversy or is a cause of controversy.

Also, honestly? Referencing one game uselessly in the hopes of getting a few clicks? Weaksauce, man. Weaksauce.

As for DAII, you'll either love it or hate it. The haters hate the fact that you're essentially stuck in Kirkwall, they hate the poorly written characters, the Mass Effect-ish mechanics when they were expecting a return to form, the same way Origins revisited the old Baldur's Gate standards, etc...

I'm indifferent, personally. It's not BioWare's best by any stretch of the word but it's not their worst either.

Well I liked it enough to finish it twice. I'm on my third playthrough, this time a mage, but I stopped playing it for a while now in favor of other games (Dark Souls!). But according to Steam, I put 225 hours in it.

Also, Legacy was pretty fun (the DLC).

EDIT:

Thanks for reminding me. OP, I highly recommend you play on hard, at least after the "tutorial" beginning thingy. The combat was a big improvement over Origins, but it is hardly a challenge on normal.

Its a decent game.
Its a game worth playing. While it may not be perfect in any stretch of the imagination, its a solid performance overall.

As one of the few people, I found DA2 to be an improvement over DA:O regardless of some flaws.

It's not one of Bioware's best games, but it is not one of their worst games either. It's mediocre when being considered a DA:O sequel, but already when it's being viewed as a Dragon Age game that fiddles with the mechanics somewhat, though still has the occasional reference to your DA:O campaign to consider it a "sequel". Of course, it could have been so much better had it not been rushed out the door by EA, no less.

The only major flaws I'd remark on about the game, would be the ninja-like spawning of enemies around the city, the remodeling of the Darkspawn (although honestly, they were 0.9% of the game, so that is just a personal gripe), Kirkwall needs more people in it that are actively visible and look like they actually live there, and the all-too-close similarities in outcome for choosing either Templar or Mage in the final act. The rehashed maps honestly didn't bother me all that much, considering the terrain itself around Kirkwall doesn't change by year, so there would be no reason for the natural formations and caves to look or feel any different every time Hawke ventures outside the walls (giving a feeling of familiarity to the area for Hawke, no less).

I was also one of several that loved the faster paced combat (not perfect, but better thanthe typical slog DA:O was, despite loving both games) and the animations for mage staff combat.

It was average, which makes it a let down from the original Dragon Age. Do not play the combat on a higher setting as a mage or a rogue unless you think that getting stunned for 3 seconds every time you take any damage is a fun combat system(Pro Tip: Its not.)

I love it and think the vast majority of the hate is totally unfounded. There are definitely a couple of issues that no one can deny (re-used sets being probably the worst offender), but when you actually look at them most of the complaints really just boil down to "it's not the exact same game as DA:O." If you play the game and enjoy it for what it is instead of just wanting DA:O 1.5, there's a lot to like even if it's certainly not perfect.

Terrible sequel, average game, massive gaps in the story and absolutely no meaningful decisions made.

I *really* wish I'd purchased the game for $10. I pre-ordered it with a birthday code EA e-mailed me for $35, and that was still too much.

I'd like to see where you go to listen to those complaints. Where I've been going, most of the complaints were "It's the exact same thing as Mass Effect 2 with a weaker story."

Its decent but very repetitive. The combat will get boring fast. The problem is the game is only meh at best, Bioware is know for making very high quality games. S

Well i can certainley say it'll make Skyrim look a hell of a lot better xD
But it really depends what sort of game you're looking for, if you enjoyed DA:O you'll probably enjoy this, although it's not quite as good.

My favorite game of the year so far, though saying that games that follow the Bioware formula tend to be my favorite games.

It's in no stretch of the imagination a bad game, but it wasn't game I wanted to or expected to foll;ow Origins. For a tenner however, it's worth a play!
