I'm playing through (for the first time with any Elder Scrolls game, mind you) with a mage/warrior hybrid who uses a one handed sword and various magics. First off, in your opinion is that a sound strategy, secondly, is there any advantage to using magic robes as opposed to just enchanting armor? I noticed that enchanting armor doesn't give the same amount as the original robe but I assumed that was just because my enchanting wasn't high enough yet.

Also, on a somewhat unrelated note does anyone know if allying with the Imperials will cause any negative effect in cities obviously allied with the Stormcloaks (such as Winterhold)? Please respond in a non-spoiler way. Please and thank you.

If you swing it right you can definitely play this well. I would go with light armor (specifically the Saviours Hide). Go through the college of winterhold questline and get the Dragon Prince's mask. (100% increased magicka regeneration)

No idea about the second part, haven't touched the civil war quests.

It's a very popular class choice, actually, and it works rather well. Until you get a really high enchanting skill, robes will be better. Once you get your enchanting high enough it will be better to enchant armor. So much better, in fact, that you can easily bring down the cost of 2 schools of spells to 0, while wearing the heaviest armor. Also train some smithing, it helps to have better armor.

I play as that kind of character, and so far it's worked out well for me. At the moment I like to use this spell called Fire Rune, which essentially works like a magic land mine. I set it up to where I predict the enemies will come after me, switch to my axe and shield, and wait until they run over it before I attack. It weakens them and makes fighting them easier. Plus it helps me raise my destruction skill without risking leaving myself open to damage.

Well it's a war so I assume quests will bring you into conflict with stormcloak cities, but just wandering around after joining, I don't think anything will happen.

I actually just finished the College of Winterhold questline, and I've been a Battle Mage the whole game so far. Light armor and One-Handed. A tip from me is forget Destruction. It's nice, and you can use it a bit, but Conjuration is absolutely essential. Most of the time I don't carry weapons with me, and just conjure a Bound Sword. Also the ranged damage from the Flame Atronach is very helpful in any fight. If you feel you are having magicka or health problems, take on some alchemy and brew some potions, it's not hard to do as you explore.
