Hello fellow escapists, I was wondering why dwarven ruins are located in Skyrim?

The dwemer/dwarves of Tamriel had a rather large area of land that covered both Morrowind and Skyrim(They are next to each other). Not surprising that there would be ruins in Skyrim, as there was in Morrowind.

Dwarves used to be really technically advanced, had these awesome fortresses underground with cool traps and machinery guarding it, blah blah blah. Then they mysteriously disappeared.

Straight play of these tropes: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Precursors
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AdvancedAncientAcropolis

Really common fiction element. Super advanced race from before disappears and leaves tons of tech.

I think OP meant why the Dwarves were in Skyrim specifically. To which I would refer back to the first response.

Yeah, the Dwemer basically spread across the northern half of Tamriel, from the isalnd of Stros M'kai off the coast of Hammerfell in the west, to Vvardenfell in the east.

Although do they really count as precursors when they were around at the same time as everyone else, but they just did things differently? Especially since while they might have been *technologically* advanced, that doesn't really help much when the other guy can shoot lightning from his hands.

Because, at the end of the day, it's fiction and doesn't have to have an absolute continuity in order to be enjoyed.

For possible DLC?

Best explanation I could come up with.
Eh, I Think the first DLC's going to be about the

Snow elves, Aka Falmer. I Felt they were flushed out just a little bit but it left me with hunger to learn more about them, And possibly to speak to one.

I definitely don't wanna speak with them, little ugly bastards hanging around with poisonous centipedes talk only to the business end of my axe :p Though you might be right for a DLC, there is some books and reports hinting to a major upsurge in their activity/strength and they absolutely hate all the light-dwellers.

As for the Dwemer, as many people said, they did live in Skyrim too, so it makes complete sense some structures would be left, this construction looks solid (look at Markarth...or Black Reach)

Also, the Dwemer were sons of bit**es, their stuff might be pretty cool but the people themselves were complete assholes...
