Ok, so I finally played skyrim. "Its the best game ever" they said. I've played, back in the day, quake, and doom. I also happened to have played 'heretic', which is basically the same game but with magic. My question is this: Skyrim seemed a lot like bioshock to me, which in turn isnt all THAT different from another fps; isnt skyrim just call of duty for fantasy guys? I mean, obviously the content cant be compared but gameplay...its pretty much a shooter to me when it comes down to it. Thoughts?
My thoughts are that you are trying to incite the diehard fans of Skyrim. Other than that you really offer nothing else. This shouldn't even be a discussion because apart from being video games in the first person perspective COD and Skyrim have no other similarities. The stories are completely different, the characters, the motives, weapons, ways to play the game are vastly different.

I came to this thread because I thought it was about placing objects over NPC heads to steal things in Skyrim - ie placing wool over their eyes.

I am disappointed.

Bioshock? CoD? Really? I don't see it.

If you said isn't this just Fantasy Fallout 3, I'd say - well yeah, it's a Bethesda RPG - what did you expect?

But Bioshock? I don't recall spending Skyrim being forced to backtrack for three (fun) hours at every locked door. I don't recall any enclosed environments, really, apart from a few Dwarf ruins.

From Skyrim, I mostly remember wandering around the plains and mountains fighting random wildlife and trolling Giants.

I also remember the giant Mushroom cavern - Blackreach, I think? - which as officially the most fun location in all of Skyrim.

Trollin huh I'll bite.

Yes all first person games, as far as mechanics are concerned, are inherently the same. That's kinda what sharing heredity is.

Now ignoring the troll, one game is an action driven narrative that is heavaly focused on cover based shooting mechanics; while the other is a tolkien-esq fantasy world utilizing exploration quest mechanic to actively avoid a narrative focus.

Now that I've done that I need to get started on a COD inspired mutiplayer mod for Skyrim, with elves and dwarves using full and semi-auto magic staffs to shoot rainbow colored lightning at each other. Naturally I'll add cover mechanics and kill streaks that can summon flaming pigs and dragon flybys, or maybe raining flaming dogs...

By this logic having a nice roast beef dinner is the same as being stabbed because they both involve knives.

Guys, I figured it out!

Look at this:

Using a bow in first person

Shooting fire in first person

using a bow in first person

Shooting fire in first person

Don't you see - they are clearly the same game. And since Dark Messiah uses the Source engine, and Half-Life 2 also uses the source engine - Skyrim is clearly related to HL2.

But wait, there is more. Day of Defeat is a mod for HL that portrays soldiers in WW2. And this is the exact same as Call of Duty!

Oh my god, it all makes sense now! TC was correct. Skyrim is Call of Duty.
I find this hilarious because I'm installing Dark Messiah right now.

No matter what you relate Skyrim with, it's still an amazing game and I know for a fact Bethesda poured their souls into the very game
Are you saying they worked hard on the game? Or are you suggesting some kind of Lord of the Rings scenario? Because I can totally picture Todd Howard standing in a volcano, pouring all his malice and hate into the game disc.

Wow. So, im trolling because i think skyrim is nothing more than a magical fps, or am i accused of trolling because you dont accept that someone isnt a fan of it. Considering the jerkoff responses, its safe to say none of you can remove the head from your donkey. Anyway, i do appreciate those who explained why you think its not like an fps, thanks for understanding and not being dbags.

No people think your trolling because you said that it was just Cod but with swords and magic instead of guns. Usaully the only people who visit the forums on this site have a understanding of game genres and the difference between them.

You demonstrated a clear lack of this understanding that people find hard to believe, it's simply more likely that you are trolling, some which I am inclined to believe.

Whilst they share little in terms of setting and mechanics, I do feel that Skyrim is to RPGs as Call of Duty is to the FPS - an incredibly well made cinematic experience aimed at the widest possible audience. That isn't intended as a criticism if it sounds like one.

Skyrim is the RPG equivalent of COD. A style over substance blockbuster.

I never played it in 1st person, actually. I want to see my customized and equipped character do stuff.

Seeing that I'm taking the sneaky route, I find it plays a lot like Thief or Splinter Cell.

I suppose you could play it like some sort of very untraditional FPS if you played only in FP and used only bows and magic, which behave very different from the usual realistic firearms you see in so many FLS' these days.
