Well, the game is about (averting) Armaggeddon in a certain sense, so maybe the bug jars and the positions of the towns was supposed to be one part of why the end of days has come to the world.

Btw, the second theory is actually essentially accepted canon on the TES Lore forums, and has very little to do with the insect jars.

Sounds like someone reads too much Fullmetal Alchemist.
Or just doesn't get much sleep.
These guys must be up all night because of the chronic knee pain that comes with making bad jokes all the time.

Or I can be wrong, and some Bethesda dev is in a dark room going "excellent..." like Mr. Burns

Wow, I saw two in a rather short period of time, so I assumed they were normal. I ended up ignoring the second one.

For the record, FMA wasn't the first and certainly isn't the only source to use the term "transmutation circle", so thinking that theory has anything to do with FMA is a bit hasty.

Problem with the first theory is that it's almost a self-fulfilling prophecy. "Commit genocide in the cities"? At that point you kinda earn the title of one-man apocalypse. And besides, at that point the end of the world wouldn't seem as dramatic since you've already killed off half of it.

My guess is that the simpliest explination is most likely the correct one: the bugs are an easter egg and if you're nerdcore enough to translate the runes correctly you'll have a secret message from the developers.

Wait, there are bugs in jars? Where are these?

I've been all over the damn place and played for about 140 hours and haven't stumbled upon one.
If you go from Riverwood to Riften taking the path through Helgen and just south of the Throat, you'll come across an abandoned shack called the "Alchemist's Shack". The butterfly is there. There are four more hidden throughout the world, but that's the only one I know of that isn't potentially spoiler-rific (and I only know about one other).
If you do the Thieves Guild Questline, when they send you into the estate in the middle of lake outside riften, when you get to your target in the room you'll find a Bee in a Jar.

p.s. thanks for the Butterfly in a jar Loc. :) i will decorate my house with these! should i ever find them all!

This seems far-fetched... but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be right on the money.
I doubt that they were ever made with any other purpose but to sit in the game and look pretty.

Also, if this does turn into some DLC plot of doom, I think it will be because all these people inspired it rather than found it, but that would still be pretty cool.

It's true that FMA wasn't the first user of the term, but the theory is a direct reference to Fullmetal Alchemist, and was directly taken from the overarching plot of the series. The joke is that it based on FMA.

I read somewhere they were part of a collector quest that was left out in the final product.

It was further deduced that collecting them all would give you the title - Jarl.

How many dragons are there?
I've never played Skyrim but this relates to me about Full Metal Alchemist.
Maybe there's a secret connection xD

Maybe Bethesda just put them in there for the hell of it and are keeping quiet about what those jars are for until the whole fanbase has run out of ideas, because then they'll pick one and implement it.

Hey, it could work.

As a Fullmetal Alchemist fan finding this on reddit made me shit-brix, shiver and squeel with joy all at once. Currently acting on the first theory with a new character.

Also going to try casting "Soul Trap" on the Talos statue and see what happens.

I should add that the runes on the top of the jars aren't actually in the dragon language, I don't believe. I think they're in Elder Futhark, an ancient Runic language.

Just read about half of the thread and man... this is deep.

But somehow I can't shake off the feeling that people are reading too much in this game..

And on the other side the following post seems kinda awesome if it would become a real quest:

Ok the weirdest thing just happened to me. I was thinking about that guys whole transmutation theory. And I started looking at the dragonfly jar because that's the only one I had. Need-Horse-Water is what it translates to, and he said something about whiterun being the horse head. I noticed water flowing out of the city so I traced it back to it's source, it was flowing out of Dragon's reach and into a pool underneath the bridge. Then I noticed a skeleton floating in the water there. I had seen it before, just never paid attention to it. And then everything just seemed to right. Dragonfly and dragons reach - the place where you flew off in a dragon. The horse water being the origin of the water coming out of whiterun. I put the jar in the skeleton and I shit you not a dragon started attacking the city the moment I put it on him. Nothing happened when I killed the dragon but I realized that the crests of blood may in fact be having to kill a dragon in each of the city. I dont know if placing the jar on the skeleton had anything to do with the dragon spawning, but realized that it would make more sense for Bethesda (If this whole theory is correct) to require you to kill an assortment of dragons, one in each of the five points (main cities), as well as the other locations he listed. TL:DR - For step 1, kill a dragon in each of the 5 cities instead of going on a killing spree, makes much more sense!

So, TES6 is going to be set in times of apocalypse while being able to explore whole TES land that is being destroyed by demons?
Oh, wait, diablo already did that.
