Does anyone know how to "part ways" with a follower and NOT have them go and live at my house. I think it's only Lydia who does this because she's my house-cahl or whatever, but I'd really prefer if she would leave me alone and go and live at the castle where she belongs. Is it possible?

Two words:

Boethia's Quest

For the record, in any city that you're a Thane and own a house, you will have a house-carl

Just make sure that if you take that quest (find near Wind Helm) that you want that particular companion extra-dead

Ok. Well, thanks for the rather cryptic advice.
Well, I figured you might want to avoid the spoiler and find out for yourself.

During the quest for the Daedric Prince Boethia, you have to sacrifice one of your companions.

Take her out with you on a quest and just let her do all the fighting until she gets herself killed.

So, in terms of the OT, No.

You can part ways, but after a while she will go to your house since you bought it. She would probably return to the castle if you don't buy it, but as your housecarl, she is 'sworn to carry your burdens'. (sorry)

Find yourself a lovely little black soul gem (or Azura's Black Star), and use Lydia to make a nice pair of boots for your next follower to wear. Thats what I did.

Yup, that's easy although I'll post it behind a spoiler once you reach sky haven temple or whatever it's called in the main quest line you can have the blades "recruit" ol lids and get rid of her but the best part is you can still use her later if you want

You could always just boost up the Forsworn armour's rating with leather strips, and make her presence... much less annoying.

Well she's not that bad but if you really don't like her that much take her somewhere quiet and high then kill her, do Boethiah's quest, Storyline related option and that is it. Also as already said when you become a Thane you will always have a House Carl as they protect your house. The only other option is to make her wear skimpy her if you're into that.

I've found she is pretty good at parting ways with me.

And by that I mean not very good at positioning herself not directly infront of a orc swinging a large axe at some Draugr...

...My god she has the worst AI out of any follower I've had...

Yeah... Kill her. Though do it somewhere quiet (Sure you can do it in your house, but then you'll have a corpse in your house... Damn I wish there was some way to get rid of corpses)) such as in a Draugr ruin...

Kill her, pretty simple really
really this is all there is to it - knife her in the back.

or for some fun, have her solo a giant!

I saw my brother take Lydia to fight giants with him and she got smashed into the ground and never came back. He didn't mean for her to die, though.

Just kill her if you want her to go away. It's the easiest option.

Is it just me, or are all my companions invincible?

My people never die, they just sort fall to one knee and hobble around.
