The 11th of November is Rememberence Day here in Canada, a holiday similar to Veterans Day and Armistice Day. In Canada, this is a statutory holiday. No stores are open in all but three or four Provinces of Canada.

Has a game ever been released on a statutory holiday where you live? Seems like quite a bit of an oversight on Bethesda's part to me. I mean, It's Canada, we're not exactly hard to miss on a map!

What better way to remember the sacrifices of our soldiers than to smash a dragon in the face with an axe?

It's what Jesus would have wanted.

More or less, yeah.

Sure, 11-11-11 sounds like a cool date, and it's the same if you use the US dating system, but the day does have some significance that might have prompted a different date.

It's all for the sake of the interesting release date: 11/11/11 which is also, incidentally, a palindromic number. So Canada is nothing but collateral damage in the great scheme of the "I see what you did there" game of release dates. I'd preorder it through amazon.

It's remembrance day here in Britain. All shops are still open but at 11:11 we have a minutes silence. We can still buy skyrim though, so everything is fine.

I think Skyrim is being released on that day for the only reason of it looks very cool in the trailers.

We might as well make it a holiday here as well, I mean, who in their right mind will show up at work with a copy of Skyrim crying in a game store for them.

It's not a thing about waiting until the holiday is over. Stores are workplaces in all but three provinces are closed on the 11th. I preordered from a store, not online, so I cannot get pick up my preorder, at all, on the 11th. I have to wait a day to play.

Yeah, it's Rememberance Day here in Australia too. It's not a public holiday, but everyone sort of recognises the fact. I won't really be in much of a state to remember though. For me, Skyrim comes out on the day I have heart surgery. Yaaay! Thank you to my cardiologist for his horrible timing...

Sounds about right to me. How else would they have gotten such a badass ending for the teaser trailer?

You should check your local shop. In Belgium most if not all shops are closed but my local retailer is most likely selling it on Thurday according to their facebook page. Though they couldn't guarantee it was playable before Steam says so.

The only issue is that I'll have to stop playing for a minute around midday...

they didn't choose remembrance day on purpose-it's a friday in the holiday buying season but not close enough to christmas to look like a holiday release. it just happened to be the eleventh, that's all.

I know of no stores that close operations on Remembrance Day. Everything remains open and business as usual including schools and public transit. I'm in Ontario though, so it must be one of the exception provinces you referred to.

As for the release, it's all about the marketing. 11/11/11 is a day where TONS of stuff is being released. Also I believe Skyrim is a global release if memory serves. The percentage of people unable to get the product on launch day becomes insignificant as a result of Remembrance Day.

I live in Ontario Canada, and stores are always open on Rememberence Day. It's not really a holiday at all.

We have Rememberance Day on the 11th here in the UK but it isn't a holiday...
It is a holiday, but is held on the Sunday after 11/11/11 or on the date if it turned out to be a Sunday.
