Wait... companions can die?
All she ever does is break to her knees, breath heavily for 5 seconds, then get up again.
Whaaat?
I've heard different things, notably that companions (or at least certain ones) can't be killed by enemies but CAN be killed by you, or that enemies will ignore a companion who's on their knees, thus minimizing the chances of their getting killed.

It does seem like at least most of the people who've gotten Lydia killed did so themselves accidentally.

RIP any person who comes with me on a quest, except if the game resurrects you to continue the storyline.

I've now just started telling everyone: "Wait here, I'll be back." then never returning. Forever waiting is probably better than death, imo.

heh...uh...well, my total of dead companions has gone up to three.

Lydia was killed by an orc with a battleaxe in Swindler's Den. In a way, it's her fault Kematu ended up in such a mess. If she had survived, I may have been more inclined to hear Kematu's side of the story...but despite our large ears, werewolves don't listen too good.

Vilkas...poor Vilkas...with your awesome Lithuanian accent....killed by Red Eagle at the climax of a sidequest. Red Eagle tasted the might of Jaeger and the Volendrung immediately afterwards, but your corpse will forever sit against that pillar. And just to take the piss, every time I open 'The Legend of Red Eagle', I get to do the quest all over again!

And finally, the newest addition. Kharjo. After being launched into orbit by a giant, twice, and surviving, I thought you were made of sterner stuff. During a raid on...uh...Tera..Tertha's Watch, something along those lines, that damn bandit spellcaster knocked the khajiit to the floor, and as I swung Volendrung at her head, she ducked, and I shattered Kharjo's spine instead. Bloody shame.

I have an update on the Stray Dog. He came back, but when I walked outside the city with him I was attacked by a dragon. He died with one ice-blast. Well, actually, I can only assume he died. I saw him get iced, but I could never find his body. I guess he exploded.

I'm gonna re-load and try to keep him in my house again. I want this fricken thing alive.

R.I.P Lydia. You either mysteriously Died to a troll that didn't even hit you or just stepped out of the plane of existance while me and the imperial guard was storming a Stormcloak cave which is most likely. Also the corpse was never to be found.

Then god came and resurrected you and your master got pissed off as all his items you carried had vanished.

Got to love the sloppy bug testing, and that in fallout 3 they have a screen where it says your companion died or that they pissed off somewhere because the game wanted you to be alone buuuut can't do it in a the exact same game engine for Skyrim.

One unlikely scenario would be that the troll hit her and sent her flying teamrocket style. As in my game it seems that trolls have the ability to launch whatever the hit once into orbit around the moon.

Also the Trees have turned pink now and look more like crystals and the tales of the cat people also are pink? Yep thats about all the fun things for now.

In my experience and according to UESP and Elder Scrolls wiki, staggered companions can be killed by enemy NPC's, but it's relatively difficult to do. Staggered companions register as a very low threat so they will be ignored if you're near, but given an opportunity to do so an enemy NPC will go for the coup de grace. They can also be killed by incidental damage and areas of effect, though what classifies for that seems rather shaky.

For example, in my playthrough Lydia was staggered by a trap (I think it was a spike wall) in Ustengrav while fighting draugr. A restless draugr was getting ready to power attack her and finish her off (all execution style) when I hit it with unrelenting force to knock it away. During the fire trap portion of that dungeon, she was staggered but somehow managed to crawl through the fire traps on her own (I hadn't gotten healing hands yet). That dungeon was really unkind to her, now that I think of it.

RIP Random Merc dude #1. You're the bravest man I've ever seen to run off a cliff to attack a Frost Troll.

RIP Random Merc dude #2. Sorry, mate, but when it came down to it it really was a matter of being faster than your friend than being faster than the bear.

RIP Random Merc dude #3. I thought you would've understood my frantic shouting of "Mammoth. Mammoth! MAMMOTH!" a little better.

RIP Lydia, how you managed to piss off two giants and their savage attack mammoths, a saber cat, and a freaking vampire of all things, i'll never know. Seriously. I started running when I saw the fire sweeping towards all of you. So thank you Lydia, for causing the biggest shitstorm I've ever witnessed but never actually caused. The mammoth-giant-vampire-saber cat-dragon free-for-all was well worth losing you.....I want my dwemer metal back.

RIP Random Merc dude #4 Good job running between the person that's been constantly spewing out a stream of either dire elemental magic or lethal arrows, often when poison on them. FYI the materials that went into the poison on that arrow in your left ass cheek was valued higher than your damn hiring cost.

RIP Horse # 16 aka Meatshield the Sixteenth, I'm sure by now that if you were anything but a smoldering frozen corpse, you would understand that standing 5 feet away from a dragon's mouth is a very bad idea, much less an Elder Dragon.

RIP My character, Sados. I'm sorry, but I really did think the Greybeards were talking shit when Agneir said the others didn't talk because they could kill you with a single word. My apologies, but technically it took two words. One froze our butt and the other set us on fire and ragdollized us against the keep walls
Jesus dude, stop.. I -I think I'm gonna die from laughter.....

you sir, are a comedic genius. you must be a comedian.

To be honest with the abillity to save and reload everywhere and the way autosaving works losing Companions should be relatively rare.

That said, I am guessing they will be patching them. According to the strategy guide Companions are supposed to be indestructable unless YOU kill them. That's the design intent at any rate, so if companions are dying to NPC attacks that's apparently a glitch.

RIP Lydia. You survived dragons, giants and 4 fire mages in a cramped tunnel. Now missing presumed dead. (I had her standing by a forge to dump stuff on until I could get a house. I want my goddamn axe back.)

RIP Horses(numerous) Sorry about all the unseen canyons, sabrecats, shouts and dragons.

I have my moments. Playing Skyrim just gives me that much more material to work with.

R.I.P. Lydia, how was I supposed to know those trolls were resistant to lightning? I swear I thought the first one was dead, but don't worry, I shall join you once they catch up to me.

R.I.P. J'zargo, presumed dead by Draugr Deathlord. He got in the way of the Deathlord's Ice Form shout and saved me. That said, I'm not sure he's actually dead. He might have got stuck on a rock again.

He died before that fighting Magic Anomalies and got resurrected by a Winterhold Conjurer, but I reloaded that save and left him in the College.
