Yep, how annoying is that title? Hehe, yes it was necessary. Skip to the TL;DR if you don't want to read my ramblings. It's the tale of my overall relationship to TES.

I just paid for a pre-order of Skrim last night.

This is a huge deal for me personally as I have been a long time "internet proclaimed hater" of Bethesda. It all started when I was happening through a Gamestop with a $20 bill in my pocket and really just seeking to kill an hour in that particular strip mall. I can kill an hour in Gamestop and still not be ready to leave for some reason, even though that rarely happens due to lack of time. Anyways, I happened by an old Xbox games cart. This was around the time support for regular Xbox games was beginning to noticeably dwindle. I saw Morrowind and flipped it over to check it out. I had heard of it but didn't know anything about it. But 3D action cam RPG? You don't see them very often. (You didn't back then) Plus, it was only $9.99 so no risk was involved. Awesome. I also grabbed Crimson Skies (good) and something else (probably sucked) as it was buy 2 get 1 free.

Later that week after I got a bit burnt out on my new discovery of Crimson Skies the video game. So I figured I would pop in that brown cased 3D RPG I got and see what it was all about. Expecting a half rate RPG, I was pleasantly surprised that this game held a lot mechanics with a ton of potential. I was so impressed I found myself talking with a friend of mine about it over the phone the next day and how the leveling system was a good idea but definitely needed some tweaks as it is way too tedious. I also disliked the the way dialogue was actually setup to discourage any character development. We discussed the highlights and pitfalls of the game for the following week. At this point, I gave Bethesda a thumbs up for trying something new and almost knocking it out of the park. (I didn't know this was part 3 of a series.)

Fast Forward, Oblivion comes out and for the first few months of its release, I had my head up Civ 4's ass. Eventually, I get it because everyone is raving about how much better it is and how wonderful it is. So I rush out and get it and what I found was a travesty. The tedious leveling system became even more tedious due to the auto-leveling system. The dialogue was ... well in conversation format now which was better but... it was such bad writing. As well the environment was less intriguing because of the auto leveling. Needless, to say Bethesda got a frown of disapproval from me and no longer had a thumbs up but more of a thumbs down.

Fast Forward, again. Fallout 3 is released and I am interested to check it out as I am familiar with the Fallout series. VATS is overpowered but fun, lore is pretty jacked up as is the writing in general all the way down to the dialogue. Open world is kind of drab but some areas are pretty interesting. Fallout 3 is a game I want to like and keep going back to but leaving unfulfilled every time I do. (FO:NV is somewhat fulfilling) I think Fallout gets marks off from it that is really just inherent to the atmosphere but ignoring that, it ranks as a good, not great, game. At this point Bethesda is just bland to me, not thumbs up or down, more like half cocked.

Bethesda is like eating unlimited breadsticks with water for the drink and vanilla ice cream for dessert. There is a lot there to eat but none of it has much flavor. So, I wasn't biting on any of this hype for Skyrim. I kept going in to all the threads talking about Skyrim and watching the videos but none of it could promise me that the NPC dealings (dialogue, story, aesthetics) weren't total garbage as they have been for me in the past. I saw what I needed to see that these features were not shit, but just average instead, which is good enough for me. Now, if you are reading this and are hesitant of Bethesda for those reasons, don't take this as a testimonial. I haven't played it, I have watched a Let's Play. My shortcomings with them are at ease, but yours may not be. Just a heads up, I don't need it to be great, I need it to be tolerable.

I have always wanted to be "in" on TES enjoyment which is also why I voiced my concerns with the series. I felt that expressing my concerns about the series' shortcomings would have people discussing how it could improve. Instead, any negative criticisms were ignored and the fanbase adopted the "quit posting in these threads then." I love exploration, I just hate bad writing, stale combat, and tedious leveling systems balled together more. Eventually, I did ignore TES threads. However, you can't simply ignore 500 Skyrim threads per week on the forums. That is why people have been voicing distaste in the past week. Imagine if CoD MW3 had as many threads as Skyrim has had for the past week or two. (And no, it hasn't been that many I have been able to ignore them without much effort.) Eventually, I got to see what I needed to see, no thanks to Bethesda who actually made the guy who had the Let's Play up and garnered them another sale, taken down.

Finally, I think I have found a TES game where I am in for the full experience people are always raving about. I am a bit hyped about that as I am about to go pick up my copy of Skyrim in only 6 hours and be up most of the night playing the thing.

TL:DR - So, the topics of discussion and purpose of the thread:
  • 1. Has Skyrim 'converted' anyone else to enjoying TES? (This mostly applies after release)

2.People who are fence sitters can ask specific questions about it from people who have it at their disposal and get an answer.

    3. Additionally, I figure since a lot of people are beginning to pick up their pre-orders tonight as midnight works it's way around the globe, as I write this, perhaps owners can list what they like/dislike about the newest entry in TES series. Discussing mechanics, art design, whatever really.

Hopefully, this will also help keep the forum a bit more controlled on the Skyrim threads to come this week for people trying to ignore it. Also helping other people excited find the people they want to talk to. Having the thread title look annoying is even a little bonus for the more extreme fans.

[HEADING=3]Disclaimer: If you can, spoiler tag things. I would appreciate it just for others. If you want to avoid spoilers, careful what you read. Personally, spoilers on this game don't bother me in the least.[/HEADING]

Well since I own a copy of it, and since Im in New Zealand we got it first(I went to a midnight release) I can discuss :D I wont spoil anything for you but basically if you liked Oblivion you will love this. Quite simply its beautiful, theres a room with a small waterfall and theres mist coming down from around the ceiling, and the scenery is just great. Voice acting is outstanding and the combat is fun too since spells are now weapons and dual wielding is a blast. The menu is a hundred billion times better than Oblivion, far easier to use Oblivions which was a bit clunky.

I have basically identical things to say as Greg Tito in the escapist review. The characters dont move a lot during speech, but its a common thing in TES and Fallout, so its not a dealbreaker for me. Ive seen like..2 small animation glitches but other than that its great. A lot of people were complaining about terrible animations and graphics for the Xbox, I dont know about that version but thats a huge exageration in terms of the PC.

I must say I enjoy it so far, Im only an hour and a half in, just out of the "intro" area, and it feels very Oblivion-esque to me, roaming the wilderness and looking over the landscape and deciding what to do next. Overall, its very fun, very pretty and I will definatly be playing more.

Yeah, I love what I have seen so far in the interface in general. One thing I am curious about, is does the NPCs do that thing where as soon as you walk into a room, everyone's eyes are glued blankly on you?
Not a deal breaker for me but one of those things I find awkward in Bethesda games. WHat I have seen of the game, the guy didn't pay a lot of attention to NPC behavior outside of mandatory dialogue.

Steam doesn't unlock Skyrim for me for about another 5 hours, and I am super, mega excited. It took me awhile to start to like oblivion, but once I really got into it, I loved the game. I didn't go very far into the main story, but I did lots of stuff for the dark brotherhood, mage's guild, etc. and other random things.

I have been listening to music from Skyrim on youtube all day. These next few hours are going to kill me.

I havent actually got to a populated area outside the "intro" area, and the intro place is meant to be a bit more scripted. In the intro area they dont, they actually act fairly naturally, at times. The facial animations are a little bit lifeless at times but it really isnt a big deal. Its just like the facial animations and voice acting in Oblivion, you notice it for a little bit, but then it fades into the background under the sheer awesomeness :D

The funny thing is I got it at midnight, but had to wait until 2am since All NZ copies are set to Australia region settings, since they group us together. So I had the game literally in my drive waiting for it :p Was rather painful.

Gold, please!

On topic: I was a convert from day one (of Oblivion); basically, I've been anxiously waiting for my box of escapism to arrive for months now. Sadly, Amazon's release date delivery has included no pre-delivery for me, so I must wait until after work tomorrow.

This is your problem. I see Skyrim as a PC oriented game personally, so I wouldnt know how it fairs on console, but the controls seem a lot more suited to PC. The infomation provided is basically indentical to Oblivion though but its the way its presented. Weapon damage etc well..its right next to the weapon, beside cost and weight. If your looking for DPS you wont find it in this kind of game. I havent actually checked my skills yet(strangely) so I cant comment on that aspect.

The minimilist approach I think suits the game better, any more info than Weight, Cost and Damage seems a little odd in this sort of game. I think its because its more focused on having players actually try things to see how the work, rather than trying to number crunch which to be fair, isnt fun. Just my thoughts.

Man, im finding the menu to be the worst part of the game until now. Its an absolute nightmare even with a gamepad, theres just to little information being displayed. How much damage am I doing? What does my character excel at? How good is this sword? Why is the whole thing so damn minimalistic?
What information do you think is missing in the interface?

What about those who didn't enjoy Oblivion or Fallout 3?

Have they improved enough, particulary in terms of Oblivion.

Is there a good amount of choice in the main quest?
Are the major voice actors put to waste?
Does the world actually look like a fantasy world, or something that could exist in our world?

Also, what kind of things can you talk to NPCs about? Are you as restricted as you were in Oblivion?

Yes I have indeed played the game :p And actually the main review Ive seen is the Escapists review, which was done on the 360 version. And he never mentions the menu system at all except for one quick mention of how easy the favourites button is. Personally ive been swapping between mousehweel and click for the menu and it hasnt bothered me at all. Since the game pauses theres no rush to do anything, so its not like things should be "difficult" to click. I havent actually had a problem with it per say, I did at the beginning but that was when my graphics were set to High and gameplay was almost impossible, after fixing them Ive been fine.

Well..Skyrim is a sequal to Oblivion made by the same company, if you didnt like Oblivion or Fallout3, then Ive got to say probably not. A lot of these things I cant answer just yet, Im about an hour or two in, just got out of the intro area and am currently wandering the countryside murdering bandits.

At least so far the voice acting has been great, they were quoted as to having like..12 voice actors in Oblivion and they have almost 70-80 now, so its a vast improvement. The second main problem people ahd in the other games was facial animations and generally movement during conversations. Not so much improvement here, they were quite good in the intro but from what I can tell so far and from what the review says its similar to Oblivion etc. There occassionally is some movement but not a lot.

Same thing with the conversations, NPCs are there to be talked to about what you need to know, not random conversations about weather etc. From how I see it its just the style of the game. If these thins are important to you, then they might be a bit of an immersion breaker for you, persoanlly for me I have barely noticed and Im having a ball :) Different strokes and all that.

Well since I'm sitting on a pointy fence, I have to make my decision soon.

1) Have they made leveling less of a pain in the ass, in a game like Oblivion to where you only got to each level every 9,000 day or so, is it now easier to level, and do you have to sleep like before or is it Fallout style to where once you level, you level up?

2) Is combat less of a chore?

3) Could you tell me if the story is going to be less straight forward this time around?

4) Are the Scream powers over powered or under powered, how do you feel about them.

And then feel free to add anything else that you like / dislike about the game and add it into your reply.
