Yea I know Fallout 3 is relatively old but I decided to replay it from a mix of sheer boredom, recent acquisition of some DLC, and nostalgia. Anyways I've also played around 60 hours of Skyrim and to my utmost surprise I actually still favor Fallout 3 over it.

I really like the post apocalyptic setting of the game and the music from the radio is just phenomenal for atmosphere and really suits the world well, and while the world of Skyrim is admittedly more fleshed out it never really clicked with me the way Fallout did.

I also much prefer the game play. VATS is an absolute blast to use and always feels fresh (watching a Supermutants head explode in slow motion never gets old) and the variety of different weapons to use is just great (Plasma Riffle+PowerFist+Fatman=WIN) Skyrim is just as fun however but I felt it was much to easy after a some upgrading in enchantment and smithing and kind of lost its fun (happened with FO3 i admit but VATS kept it interesting for me)

So which one do you prefer and why?

I dislike them both equally. I've never really been able to get into Bethesda games all that well, typically because of the fact that their stories are some of the poorest in the business and there's never really any sense of urgency that their stories are supposed to tell. Open world supersandboxes can't really do 'THE WORLD IS ENDING SAVE IT NOW' all that well due to how the size of the world can really dilute how it feels.

That said, in terms of gameplay, I prefer Fallout 3 better, but the story in that game is abysmal- to the point where it breaks several fundamental laws of physics as it's 2nd premise. Remove the radioactivity out of the ocean- fuck that and just get people to distill it, the amount of radioactive particulate that would be required to give people even basic radiation would be obscenely high. At least skyrim can pass off it's bullshit with magic, Fallout is set in an alternate version of our universe, it can't just pass off physics-breaking crap just to develop a plot.

Fallout New Vegas, however, I really enjoyed.

Above: truth. Fallout New Vegas is basically the sort of game Bethesda should be making instead of hiking sims.
No, its the game that Obsidian should keep making, and be able to make without getting fucked over by a publisher on royalties.

Beth has Michael Kirkbride......... and no one writes better lore then he does.

I dont think anyone else could so imaginatively make the 4th wall part of the lore of the series any better then he could.

Also Fallout 3 had radioactive wasteland and destroyed city environments.... skyrim at least offered 6 different environments to move through.

But Beth has Toddler and co., while Obsidian have guys like MCA and J.E. Sawyer. So don't expect that to happen any time soon.
Points well taken. Bethesda is probably already hard at work finding new and special ways to fail in the Fallout 4 dev process.

Yeah Bethesda is gonna fail at making a "true" RPG or w/e, but they will do what Obsidian has failed to do repeatedly.

Make a game that doesn't have as many bugs and that can get a score comparable to the prequels.

for all of Obsidian's "good game design" they have yet to make a game thats actually....... playable.

And yet all we see are generic medieval landscapes.

Fallout is DEAD !! It's all about Wasteland 2 now.
Looking forward to Wasteland 2 so much. Everything I hear about it makes me like it more.

Oblivion was generic mid-evil landscapes.

I dont recall large sulfur lake wastelands, and entire areas of the maps that are a labyrinth of ravines in most fantasy games.

Skyrim isn't generic? It's just a more northern/Norse approach to generic Medieval fantasy. Sure there may be tons of available areas that are strange and alien looking, but we never see them. Just hear about them. Sure Fallout may be a bleak radiated wasteland, but it makes you appreciate the civilized life you do find. Oblivion and Skyrim are just pub crawls between looting parties.

Funny because I despised almost all the towns in New Vegas because of how dead they seemed.

Skyrim's and Oblivion's cities actually felt... alive..... even if the people did talk about mudcrabs too much.

And remember, ONCE AGAIN ladies and gentlemen...Bugs eventually get fixed. Bad design and writing dees not.
the thing is though Obsidian DOESN'T fix their games.

Also if you read I specifically mentioned that Bethesda games have LESS bugs, not no bugs.

I know you are a purist to the extreme but try harder next time to find ways to insult me, yours are pathetically bad.

Guys! Don't you know that vs. threads are against the rules! You should all be ashamed of yourselves! These rules that we have are the only thing that separates us from those savage degenerates at all those other forums! You know the ones!

Fallout 3, though I will agree with everybody else here and say that New Vegas was better. The characters were somewhat more entertaining in Fallout 3, and much more in New Vegas.

Alive? How? They were full of cardboard cutouts that looked like people shouting their designated lines about the dragon they saw or waiting til you finished their fetch quest. Not to mention the cities were all boring. They were always "medieval walled city" full of people who hate Cat people and Lizard people. Fallout 3 had a city made from a scavenged Airfield, a secret community of Cannibals that live in the ruins of the subway systems, a community of Children under the age of 18 that live at the site of a former tourism spot/field trip designation, and a city of Ghouls who live in the dilapidated ruins of a natural history museum.

Lets see
-Every city in Syrim has its own unique architecture, with people who walked around on various, though predictable, walk cycles

-Fallout New Vegas had destroyed buildings.... and destroyed buildings,, whereas Fallout 3 had rusted metal and destroyed buildings, where 95% of NPCs stayed rooted into the ground in their designated spot.

furthermore Skyrim had cities of
-Superstitious people afraid of any outsider
-A city full of outright racist asses
-A city were everyone was afraid of the local mob with a secret society of Forsworn hiding in it
-A city of mage haters who are ironically next to mages
-A city were everyone makes puns off of all the dead in thier graveyeard
