If I had to sum up Skyrim in a sentence, I'd say, "Better than Oblivion in almost every way"

Combat is better, the stats and levelling up is better, it looks nicer (not as in graphics hardware, as in aesthetics), the NPCs are prettier, the writings better, the story (as much as I've played so far) is better, the voice acting is better, magic is much, much better.

You might be able to tell that I'm a bit of fan of Skyrim, and I've not really had issues with the stuff mentioned here.

Come on guys!!! I don't really have any issues with the game at all, and I play it on the 360. I didn't even care about the combat, I eased into it and yeah...there are some pretty stupid bugs but none of them have had a huge affect on me. Why can't we just stop complaining and play the game, because honestly, I'm not experiencing any of these problems.

All these threads make me want to pop Oblivion back into my 360. I never did finish the main quest...I got sorta side tracked being a mage...and a thief...and an assassin...and terrorizing the townsfolk.

My only major complaints with the game is the PC UI (Which was kind of shit in Oblivion as well) and the fact that I've been having way more technical problems than I should, even for a Bethesda game. That being said, it's not what I would call an amazing game. The combat is still clunky (Much less so than Oblivion but still) and I still don't think they quite fixed the NPC's uncanny valley effect. Animations are still pretty awful.

I don't know what it is about this series, but despite the huge world with ton of content, the games never feel very satisfying. It's odd, because I never feel that way when it comes to Bethesda's (Yes I know New Vegas was developed by Obsidian, but same type of game) Fallout games. Can't pinpoint exactly why. I wasn't very hyped for Skyrim, but I got what I expected: an Oblivion that was actually fun to play. Past that? Meh.

Well it isn't anything amazing, what surprises me the most is that the writing is actually pretty decent.

What most people were expecting was "The God of all gaming!" I expected a Bethesda game, it seems my expectations were more than met, this is why I don't buy into hype, because that way I end up not being all bitter once a game is released, I just get to laugh at the flaws I expected and be pleasantly suprised when it works out better than I expected in some way or another.

For the record, I got it as a gift from a friend, on release day, I personally was planning to wait till a steam sale around christmas, but apparently that just won't do... :p

Now, my thoughts on the game thusfar, combat feels much better, and I can smack shit with my shield(so much more worthwhile HAVING A SHIELD in Skyrim) also, crafting in it is well planned out, it works and I get to make my Warrior/Smith character I've been wanting to make, also unlike oblivion, where if you are not a marksman by trade and specialized to all hell with a bow it becomes completely useless to you, in Skyrim it still kills shit even though I have NO PERKS in bow use at all, and is thus useful in situations where I feel it might benefit me to kill a deer or something so i don't hafta buy leather to make armour with.

Also, dual wielding is fun, Magic is far far better in execution, and FEELS less crap.
Oh also almost forgot to mention unlike oblivion, you can "un-notch" an arrow by hitting R so you don't hafta losse the damn thing into the ground and pick it up, if you don't want to take that specific shot, or have prepared another arrow when you really should have switched to your axe, which has happened to me, where I know I'll miss if I take the shot and probably die because I won't be able to adequately defend myself in melee.

Yeah the people still generally look like soulless automatons when they talk to eachother in groups standing in the courtyard or whatever, and there's almost no life in the cities/towns at all, but I EXPECTED that, so it's one of the things I laugh about.
Still, I do wish they'd have taken some inspiration from games that have copious foot traffic in their cities and at least made some people patrol random paths(other than guards) to make cities feel like there was at least something going on as you pass through. Then again I never spend much time hanging around in town unless I'm selling/crafting something at the local smithy, or turning in a bounty on that latest bandit mop up that I picked up due to my tendancy to murder bandit camps for fun while doing other things anyway.

I say it was better than expected, not as good as it could have been, and yes overhyped to the point of no return, but it fills a niche in my gaming needs and it does it fairly well.
I give it a rating of 8/10(when compared to their other titles) and comparative to hype I would assign it a 4.5/10, I guess as my personal opinion meter I would say:
Flaws are visible, but contained and not game ruining.
It's stable(at least on my machine)
The gameplay flows smoothly combat horse riding, the works.
The environment well built, it lacks the obvious immersion breaking scaling of it's predecessor, and it has actual wolf PACKS not just a bunch of singular wolves meandering about randomly for no given reason.
Leveling system is much improved, and works seemlessly, allowing greater character development, less hassle.
Menus although better designed than oblivion show their consolefication as they don't scroll following the mouse they only scroll properly when using a gamepad or the keyboard to navigate them, which is definately the sign of some shitty porting(Bad Bethesda, BAD!*hits with rolled up newspaper*)

Hell, I'm not a game reviewer, maybe I should start, but not today already too long of a post,

The game is fine, not great but good better than personally expected.

Why do you care? If the game is so fantastic, why do you need everybody to agree? Does it make you unhappy if we are being mean to a game?

I like Skyrim A LOT. But there's enough to annoy me. And I like to talk about stuff that annoys me to other people. Weirdly, more than about stuff that doesn't annoy me.

Shall I tell you what I'm not surprised about? The soundtrack, which is amazing on a level that's almost impossible to describe without making a mess in my pants.

An added bonus is that one of the songs that plays in Whiterun is actually a track from Morrowind, which makes it feel far more welcoming and homely for someone that spent more than a few thousand hours in Vvardenfel.....like me!

Wait, you mean Skyrim didn't live up to the ridiculous hype that it's been getting for a year? Well who could have predicted that?

EVERYONE WITH A BRAIN! THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS WITH HYPE!
It was only announced this year

i think you all are too bitchy and whiny about this. there will never be a perfect game but I still think its better than you are all saying.

Uh, okay? If you don't want to buy the game then don't... If people don't want to wait, and can deal with the bugs then surely that's their choice? You don't need to imply that they're making the wrong decision.
This.

Plus i bought oblivion goty editon on my xbox360 . Played and loved it without mods . Even if i played it on PC i wouldn't use mods . Not that i have anything against anyone who does , but it is a perfectly good game without it. Vanilla Oblivion ftw!

1. theres a lot of gameplay updates. they've redone combat, magic, leveling, perks, the menu system, armour...

2. the guards aren't linked like that any more. its based on the area you're in.

3. i played Oblivion on XBox... as i am doing with Skyrim.

but yeah, there are a lot of things that should be evened out/patched up.

Maybe if we still got fucking demos...
Combat: no, fundamentally the same, with slight additions (dual-wielding)
Magic: no, fundamentally the same, just with fewer features
Leveling: the same but simplified
Perks: I'll give you that
Menus: You're right! They've redone the menus! Specifically, they've made them awful. You cannot navigate them with a mouse, forcing you to use WASD. Why? Bad. Console. Port.
Armour: the same

2. The guards are still linked, they've just gone from one big hive mind to lots of little hive minds.
Magic: its not the same, you equip it to a weapon slot, can dual-cast, can fire some spells constantly, new spells added (ie transmute)
Leveling: you don't pick major skills any more, you pick different kinds of perks based on the skills, there's no attribute boosting, you choose Magicka, Health or Stamina...
Menus: Console is fine, and i see no problem.
Armour: chest and legs combined.

And the point is you get bounties put on your head. of course they'll recognise you or its a shit guard system if you can escape capture by going to a town two miles away in the same jurisdiction.

I couldn't stand Oblivion but I'm finding that Skyrim is quickly finding its way to being one of the best RPG's I've ever played. The characters may not be as compelling as what you'll find in a Bioware game, but the beautiful world of Skyrim is a joy to roam around in and the combat, while flawed, is surprisingly entertaining. I'm having a great time.
This sums up my feelings perfectly.
There are a few sketchy things that I would like to see changed, but I haven't encountered anything game-breaking so far, and I'm having loads of fun. I HATED Oblivion though, how weird that might be to some of you.

(Also, enough threads about Skyrim already!)

"Lolz! It's exactly the same game, derp!" is pretty much the laziest most pathetic argument; especially in this case. If you played it for five minutes you'd realize that. I'm really getting sick of this being the go-to criticism of a new game in a series that people put forward to convince themselves they're intelligent.

I have played two days in a row with out any immersion breaking bugs, this game is epic.
I got it this morning and I've been playing it literally all day. The only thing was getting "team rocket's blasting off again"'d by a giant. That'll get patched though, and I think it's only if you're weak enough to be one-shotted by them.

That is until the first wave of patches comes around the a few mods pop up to fix the usually GLARING deficiencies. So to those of you who have complaints about Skyrim. Suck it up, that's what happens when you lack any form of pattern recognition.
I have nearly 30 hours played and have zero complaints.

Only encountered 1 glitch.

The combat is improved from Oblivion, the UI works okay and the scenery looks decent.

The only people i'm seeing complaints from are those that hated Oblivion but went out and bought Skyrim anyway .... or stupid people as we like to call them.

Yeah this is kind of the boat i'm in. I didn't hate oblivion at all but i definatly didn't like it either. Total of like 20 hours(can't say i didnt try) and i just could not get into it. Everything felt big sure, but also LIFELESS!

Skyrim has been rocking my socks though so to speak :3. The leveling up is loads better, the combat improved, for console ui greatly improved (not so much for pc i hear), and honestly i can just keep going on!
The biggest thing to me though is you as a character/player actually feel important!!! There's an actual story to follow where you are needed! 20 hours of oblivion and not once did i feel like i was doing something worth doing :/

I'm sure Skyrim is a decent game... 100 mods later which is why for me, the game doesn't actually come out until late 2012. I need a beautification mod to fix the crappy work the modelers do, a nude mod so that I can have an X-rated game, and finally dozens of gameplay balance tweaks and reskins for tons of crap that probably looks like shit in the game. Also I imagine I will want a naked elf spirit companion to replace the Wolf spirit.

In the spirit of confession, I have to say..

I really was expecting an overhyped, poorly optimized piece of wank with incredibly poor game balance which a die hard group of fans would nonetheless murder their own grandmothers in defence of and sob bitterly onto the internet about every insignificant change to the 'best game evar' Morrowind formula.

Actually, I'm now forced to admit that Skyrim is really really good, which is a shame because I really wanted to call this one.

It's dropped that stupid levelling up system where you had to micromanage every level and would end up with a gimped character if you dared to do anything other than leave a heavy object on the 'cast magic' key for the precise length of time the game arbitrarily demanded, it's got more than 3 voice actors, you can play an Altmer without wondering why the entire race hasn't just killed themselves to save mother nature some time, you can play a Breton without feeling like the second coming of Jesus carrying the BFG 9000, when you shoot people with arrows they actually fall down.. it's just glorious, and it's not even modded.

Yes, it's basically the same game underneath but I don't care because unlike the other Elder Scrolls games it's actually fun on a level which goes beyond 'lol, I got a billion intelligence by drinking potions and made an enchanted sock which kills the entire world' or 'wow, that pixelated mountain is pretty'. It's actually a good game, not just a game with some really good bits held together with unintuitive and bizarre mechanics. Yes, it could be better.. I still don't find it hugely immersive, which for an RPG I think is a pretty massive flaw, but I can accept it. Regardless, the gameplay experience is pretty much how it should have been all along, which just makes it all the more unforgivable that they left all that crap in Oblivion.

I've had one CTD so far, but nothing an autosave couldn't solve and it hasn't recurred, so bugswise it seems fine to me. Heck, I'm amazed how well it runs given the age and specs of my computer.

ITT: people complain when they could be having fun not stressing the little things, and murdering dragons..
