I haven't played a game like Skyrim before- should i get it?
The only Role Playing Game experience i've had is when i played Neverwinter Nights 2 for about an hour. It seemed ok.
I've seen a few videos about Skyrim, and they look cool, and i've always liked the idea of a huge open world enviroment.
However, i don't have a computer capable of playing games better than Minecraft, and i would have to get it for my PS3. Is much sacrificed by using a controller? Is it still worth it?

Depends on who you ask. Console users prefer that. Most PC gamers like it because of the MOD community. If you like playing the vanilla game the PS3/XBOX version will be fine. Otherwise you might want to upgrade your PC.

Skyrim offers a ridiculous amount of content. Just plain ridiculous. Its price-to-content ratio is off the charts, and for that reason I endorse it whole heartedly.

The PC version has mods, which is a gigantic plus, but if you can't get the PC version then you'll still enjoy vanilla Skyrim a lot on console, I think. The interface was clearly designed for consoles first, so the mods and slightly better graphics will be all you miss out on.

Dude I'm a couple dozen hours in on PC and I haven't even scratched the surface of the vanilla content.

I think you'll be fine on PS3 for awhile if you decide to get it.

But only if you don't plan on doing anything else for the next month.

The 360 has horrible lighting even with the disc installed to the hard drive.
That is because of a bug they are having. And its not that horrible. I'm playing it right now and its pretty damn awesome.

To be more accurate then. On my system which has troubles, on my TV that displays images properly, and to my eyes which are not suffering from any issues, the game lightning is ATROCIOUS, so much so, that I use a flamethrower to show me things in the dark.

I'm not an RPG person, but playing it I can see it's worth. It's more the expansive universe and less the game itself. The menu system, fighting... aren't great. But the world is fucking amazing, and just doing quests in it is so worthwhile. I can't say much for the plot seeing as I dislike fantasy plotlines so am biased but it's pretty varied.

What about for a person who does not have a lot of time for games? I have a full time job, a wife and a baby. Play time is quite limited, but I can get the odd hour or two in on occasion. Are those 1-2 hours enjoyable alone, or is the game best when you have something longer? I find that certain games (Fallout 3 in particular) aren't very enjoyable when you spend 90% of your play time exploring random locations without progressing the plot.

I'm not looking for content per dollars spent, I'm looking for entertainment per hour spent. Seems relevant to the OP's question.

BTW, I am quite interested but obviously haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Because the issue is lighting graphics NOT availability of spells, and THIS is an issue. A SERIOUS issue. An issue so gravitated, that I will not and can not stand to play it on the console when I look at a cupboard 2 feet infront of me and can not see ANYTHING except pure darkness and the outline.

you do realize candlelight and magelight are there for a reason. not being able to see very well in a dark underground cavern is not the lighting being bad, its the lack of lighting being used to good effect.

( note that lightNing is that electrical stuff in the air, i assume you mean lighting)
Yes, I made a childish mistake in my typing.

Although, if you read above this post, you'll notice it wasn't in a dark cavern, but in cupboards infront of me.

A controller is actually much more comfortable than the keyboard and mouse. All you sacrifice (assuming you have some experience with both) is the number hotkeys for spells and weapons, and with the new system for favorited equipment and magic thats not a big sacrifice at all. I have it for the PC but play it with the xBox controller, so I'd say no; it's no problem.

As for the PS3, I suspect you'd be sacrificing some of the visuals and such, but the issues with the game for consoles are to be fixed on the 28th in a patch, so I wouldn't worry about it working properly or not.

---

The game itself is a brilliant effort on Bethesdas part, the world is stunningly beautiful and richly detailed, the tasks are very fun, interesting and engaging, the lore is as great as always, and it has also become MUCH more friendly to new players to the genre or games in general than the previous installments in The Elder Scrolls series. I think it's the best game ever (honestly, the only near-perfect game for me) so I'd say it's a sure buy/christmas gift!
