I'm a bit of an every man.

My lone character I've bonded with is a Nord Battlemage, who sneaks around, masters lockpicking, a master smither, who has a good amount of experience in potion making and enchanting. Eventually he adapted and learned how to use a shield better, finding a nice duel sword fighter in a cave to hit the shield for a while to grind out knowledge. Very minor archery skills, and didn't go through any of the other magic trees aside from minor restoration and heavy destruction.

For all my playthroughs Ive covered most of the different combat styles - shield and sword weilding orc, battle axe nord, dark elf mage, a khajiit theif/assassin and a khajiit duel wield.

however what tends to be the style/case for ALL my characters are a couple of things.

All are good using bows and sneak...even the heavily armoured orc

and specializing in conjuration magic (atronachs mainly), for backup. frost atronachs can soak up tons of damage.

I'm a face to face combat sort of guy with a penchant for cold temperatures, so my main character is a Nord giant with a thing for shields and smithing. I put a bit of work into the Speech skill, because I find a battle-ready giant with the ability to talk his way out of almost anything rather ironic and hilarious. It also came in handy when I was selling the various armors and weapons I'd made.

He also had the tendency to Wolf out and take out entire fortresses of people, but I dropped that for RolePlaying reasons.

I've been playing a Nord in every Elder Scrolls game and in most games my ranged and stealth skills are the first to level.

I guess it's mostly a reaction to me using ranged combat initially to compensate for a low level, and eventually get stuck with it as my other skills end up underpowered in comparison.

Bows and one-handed. With the introduction of crossbows there is a 75% chance that I will dominate with archery from now on, as opposed to a usual 50/50 relationship. Because crossbows FUCKING ROCK.

I tend to create a background for the character and do things based on what that character would do, so my playstyle varies greatly. Most commonly, though, I play a Beast-race character or human (I don't really like elves that much) that is either a battle-mage, thief or plain melee character. I sometimes use a pure mage, but they are somewhat harder to pull off, and if I focus on conjuration, I feel detached from the action as my minions do everything for me. I usually prefer the Stormcloaks, but again, it depends on the character.

I tried using a vampire on my last character... WONT BE HAPPENING AGAIN. The sun damage and people attacking you when you get hungry are just too annoying. And I kept killing people I liked. So it's werewolf or nothing, I guess.

I also use mods. Lots and lots of mods. I try to keep it lore-friendly, though.

I picked a Breton, but ironically, I barely use magic at all. I always just fire arrows from the shadows.

I find that being a spellsword is the most useful from low to high levels.

I'm an imperial and I sided with the stormcloaks but only because I had chosen the imperial side on my other characters.

I use a sword in my right hand and a destruction or restoration spell in my left. If I'm fighting something tough I will usually hold a restoration spell and focus on my sword and if I fight groups of weak enemies I use destruction.

I have my light armour enchanted to make my restoration and destruction spells cost no magicka to cast.

My character is a vampire and thanks to the Dawnguard DLC I'm a vampire lord (which is very helpful when fighting Ancient(frost)Dragons and Frost Dragons.)

Level 65
100 light armour
100 destruction
100 one handed
93 restoration (it trains slowly)
100 enchanting
100 illusion (by making a 0 magicka cost armour set)
100 alteration (by making a 0 magicka cost armour set)
100 smithing (I took the heavy armour route for daedric weapons but now I use Dragonbone) (before I wore the armour mentioned below I wore Dragon Scale armour)

I wear armour from the Dawnguard DLC
I wear the ancient falmer armour obtained in the main quest of the Dawnguard DLC.
even though there is no helmet piece in the armour set I am still granted the full set light armour perk (I think I get +25% more protection)

My helmet is a dragon priest hood, Nakriin (20% less to cast destruction and restoration)

I hide to the shadows, ever so careful to conceal my position. Even a mere sneeze and they would be all over me, which would mean certain death. They've not noticed me, this is good. By this time, I've carefully moved into striking distance. There I sit, just waiting, but also watching. Watching, for their movements, their habits, and opening, anything I can use. Then the time comes, and without making a sound I draw back on my bow, and... They never see it coming. One clean shot, straight to the testicles.

Argonian + Heavy Armor + Warhammer. It's both really fun and really effective.

Or if I am feeling up to it, Destruction is also amazing.

2 Handed death machine with my Nord...also The Ebony Blade
then I switched to a Cloak and Dagger kind of guy and I think I am in love, but I occasionally bust out the good ol' Ebony Blade...

an Argonian battle-maiden most of the time, who dabbles in conjuration. Mace and shield, light armor. Enchantments for Health, Mana, and Stamina to keep up with the constant stream of damage, summoning atronochs, and charging into a fight swingin. Also the Unrelenting force or fire breath Shouts. Usually side with the empire.

If not that than what I've dubbed the Bosmer Scout, sneak and a bow, pretty much it.

Usually when I battle a high powered enemy,I first sneak up on them from behind, and put a crossbow bolt in their liver, staggering them then cast one of the many magic spells I have, usually Ice spear or fireball Then I run up to finish them off with dual Dragon bone swords.
When I'm fighting a dragon, I use lighting storm to bring him down while flying, and use the same crossbow-spell-sword tactic I use on other enemies.
My guy is a stealthy Spellword archer Nord guy, at level 53 now, have my game modded to all high hell, but only using lore friendly mods.

"The gods gave you two hands; you use them both for your weapon."

Pretty much sums it up.

Last time I played a male high-elf ranger (well, I had to use swords a few times nearer the start to stop being killed - but after that i went exclusivly bows) who didn't do magic (except for the mage side-quest at the start) and was more chaotic neutral siding to good.

This time I'm playing more of a palandin character, female, I don't think she's a nord though. I've realised I got so used to being able to attack dragons whereever they are, and from a distance I have no idea how to take down dragons with swords. I had to let the NPCs deal the damage for the first dragon as I almost kept dying. :p

It's a little odd, have 2 characters I've finished the game with. Was going for a tank build with my orc character, and wanted a bit more of a mage with my Breton character.

First maxed out skill with both... stealth. Just naturally, never trained or ground out sneaking. Just used it so much and it is so op that it goes up quickly. So instead my orc was a fighter/thief and my Breton was just a flat out thief because sneaky shooty and stabby worked out so much better than magic.

Forcing myself to go full-on mage with my current character. Of course my highest skill right now...

stealth. No matter how much I try and grind out magic, stealth goes up faster.

I usually use magic for long range and a one handed sword for short range. If the opportunity presents itself, I will try to snipe my enemy with a bow and arrow. I prefer to use healing magic on myself and companions rather than potions, but I'll still carry some around if I need it in a pinch. I rarely use shots as they tend to get me unwanted attention, especially in bandit hideouts. I'll switch to two-handed swords if it seems like magic is doing me no good. I use a sword and shield when dealing with dragons to block their breath attacks. I tend to keep my play style flexible, so I can switch up tactics to suit the situation. However, that does mean that I end up carrying a lot of stuff for the "just in case" scenarios. I don't use daggers, yet I pretty much keep one in my inventory at all times.

Playing high elf (for mana reserves), using Stealth and Magic in equal measure. I sneak around, stealthily slaughter what I can using a bow. When detected, I switch to destruction magic. Don't see a reason to come close to larger / more dangerous enemies when I can simply blast them from afar. I also maintain at least passing knowledge of any other spells that could come in handy (healing, some alteration crap etc.).

I never warmed up to melee fighting in Skyrim (or Satan forbid, Oblivion) - feels too clunky for my tastes. Besides, why wave a sword or whatever around when you can simply burn your enemies alive with a flick of your fingers?
