Skyrim's Improvements over Oblivion

So, Steam has a 75% off sale ($5) for The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion GOTY Edition, and it has made me wonder: what are the differences/improvements of Skyrim over Oblivion? Of course, there are double-wielding, a more dense world, and randomly generated structures in Skyrim, but what is/was so great about Oblivion? Is Oblivion's world really as barren as people say it is?

One of the things that drove me nuts about Oblivion was how "Ye Olde Random Dungeon Generator" all the places of interest felt. Hey, it's a cave. And it looks and feels exactly like the last 16 caves I visited. And look, here is a minotaur, and a wraith, and a wisp, and...I guess they're all hanging out together? Okay, that's cool. Now they're all teaming up on me. Alrighty then. Skyrim re-uses some assets, but the level of detail and sense of place is greatly improved, and dungeon delving eats a LOT of time in an Elder Scrolls game, so it's not unimportant.

There are other things, too, but that's the first one that leaps to mind, and I'm lazy.

The world is largely uninteresting, the characters have depth whatsoever, the voice acting sucks and most of the world is copied and pasted.

However, the shivering isles is one of the best pieces of dlc I have ever bought and while I think Skyrim is superior in almost every way, if you can get Oblivion GOTY edition for a fiver then go for it. If only to make you appreciate Skyrim more

Dunno. If I have to hear Jason Marsdens voice one more time, I'm gonna snap. He does the voice for multiple people in every town, and it's extremely obvious.

Everything substantial I could say will get said here, and I don't feel like thinking, so I am going to post something that probably only applies to me and a few other people, whoever the guy is who sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger deserves a medal because he makes me laugh every single time a guy using his voice speaks, it's not a criticism either, I get a genuine kick out of it every time, same goes for all the other recognizable voices, but those are not as funny (Barbas being the exception so far, I know I haven't scratched the surface of possible hilarious voices)

The execution of a lot of the ideas that originated in Oblivion is a lot better in Skyrim. The conversation system doesn't sound nearly as awkward, the real-time combat doesn't feel as floaty, the voice acting is a lot better, the radiant AI system actually appears to work...it's just a lot tighter. Also, there's a lot more dialogue content (And voice actors) so it feels less samey.

The problem with Oblivion wasn't that it was empty, it was that it felt really contrived. It was the awkward middle child between two games that work fine.

The level scaling of enemies is far more refined. You will still find challenging enemies in the world at level 30 but at the same time you can still feel yourself becoming more powerful as you stomp bandits. And none of them bandits have daedric armour this time!

Plus in oblivion characters could end up feeling very samey endgame when you have most important skills at a high level. But now with perks your heavy armoured sword swinger isn't likely to do too well in the thieves guild unless he has stealth perks.

Well in oblivion it always felt like you were playing not a mature action-rpg which embrases itself as it is, but a version of Morrowind for retarded kids with lack of attention.

Plus the main quest seems to be somewhat better than Oblivion's (or Doom's, same crap)

I've never really played Oblivion unmodded ( Perhaps only for the tutorial)?

But with mods, it becomes one of those games that keeps on giving. New quest lines, factions, worlds ( Morroblivion anyone?), items from other media as well as many goof off mods.

There are people who made entire games with it too, so 3 games for the price of 1! ( Andoran and Nehrim)

I don't want to derail, but is Morroblivion good? It'd interesting to tromp through Morrowind again with Oblivion's graphics and content...

Well, in Oblivion your character looked like a potato. Now we've advanced to 'angry lobster' (I'm playing a wood elf). =P

More seriously, the game is generally better, but Oblivion wasn't too bad - provided you could get past the Mr Potato Head character creation...

Clearly I've totally gotten over my annoyance at that =P

An easier question would be what hasnt improved.. and i can only think of two answers to that, the Interface and the Dark Brotherhood quests... The interface is a giant step backwards and is easily the worst thing about the game, its not awful but its probably the worst interface i can think of for a game that isnt a strategy game... and i havent done many of the Dark Brotherhood quests so far so this could change, but the characters/plot/general feel of it so far hasnt been anywhere near as good as in oblivion.

I actually like oblivion unmodded . The DLC is great .

get Skyrim, but honestly if it's only 5 bucks get oblivion too
there always mods you can get but honestly i dont much like mods. they break the expierience for me.

OT, but how the hell is that a spoiler? They plaster the goddamn things over every single trailer, screen shot, and add for the friggin' game.

That's like saying $MMO_FOTM has Fedex-quests is a spoiler.
