Sleep paralysis, anyone else experience it?

A couple of days ago I experienced sleep paralysis. Actually, I've had this every other month or so, but I never knew what it was. After fully waking up, I decided to check on the internet just what the hell was happening to me because quite honestly, it's a terrifying thing to experience.

For those that don't know what sleep paralysis is, imagine waking up. Except you're not completely awake yet. Your still going through REM sleep. So your body is paralyzed and you're still dreaming while awake. In other words, you see and hear hallucinations while paralyzed after waking up.
It's never a pleasant thing either, as it usually involved extremely loud noises and often enough your mind is smart enough to show you a reason why you can't move, somebody might be pushing you down (my case last time it happened.

The first time I experienced it, I heard the neighbors upstairs fighting. They were really going at it, smashing stuff, screaming at each other. Suddenly it went quiet and I heard footsteps going through the hallway, down a staircase, towards me room... and then I snapped out of it, unsure if it was a dream or not.
I put it down as a nightmare later.

This time, it started as a dream where my mom was over at my place and was using my computer. I went to bed. She left the room to get something from the kitchen, and then I woke up with sleep paralysis: I heard her trash everything in the entire house, except the room I was in. I tried to get up, but I felt like I was being pushed down. I could see there was something under my blanket.... and then I snapped out of it, turned on the computer and looked it up.

Apparently more people have it, it's caused by stress, anxiety and terrible sleeping patterns. I think the Twittery folk here on the 'Scapist know about my stress and sleeping patterns well enough.

I was just wondering, has anyone else experienced this, and if yes, what did you see?

Sometimes, when I wake up the morning, I'm really really tired and I want to go back to sleep.

Uh.. But nothing like that.

This is the price people pay for obtaining the gift of lucidity in dreams..

Actually, I don't really know..

I think I've experienced such a thing like that once.
It was 6:00 in the morning, and I was still up after a night of playing CoV online with my friend. I decided it was time for me to go to bed, and so I laid down on my bed and passed out. In about 5 (perceived) minutes, I woke up, but I couldn't move. My limbs were numb, but it felt like I had merged with my bed. I could feel everything that the bed touched; The carpet, my blankets, even the pillows.

Then finally, I snapped out of it, and stayed up for 5 more hours.

It's actually linked with lucid dreaming a few times before in articles that I read. I usually don't have lucid dreams though.

What you had does sound like the same kind of thing, but less.. terrifying... at least depending how comfortable merging with a bed is.

I'm really glad I don't sleepwalk. I knew a few people that did, and stories would end up floating around about them. Usually they'd have absolutely no recollection of any of the stuff that they did.

No, never happened to me, and really hope that it never does. Actually, nothing even close to that has happened to me. I don't even dream that much anymore, nightmare or otherwise. Hope that quits for you, must be terrible.

Once or twice, I've had that.
No it doesn't mean you're crazy, it is an impartial waking of your body, meaning your brain is well aware of what is going on, although it does seem to make a few things up, but any normally controllable muscles are paralyzed.
It's weird as hell, man.

EDIT: Add a poll, that would be interesting to see the results.

I don't think this has happened to me though I have felt five minutes go on for hours. The weirdist I've ever done though is wake up on the other side of my night stand, which always has a tall glass of water on it, without any pants on.

You can't add a poll to an existing thread unless you already made it with a blank one. Otherwise I would have, it's a good idea.
I know it has nothing to do with insanity, I saw someone in the thread wrongly pointing it towards that general direction, it's basically just being fully aware of the stuff that your mind is usually doing while asleep.
Or at least that's the best wording for it I can think of.
It's really weird, it freaked me out the first 2 times, but now I at least know what's going on.

That's called lucid dreaming. I've had it once or twice with nightmares. I felt I was asleep and even though my eyes were open in the dream, I could feel them being closed so I tried opening them and woke up.
Nice xkcd avatar you got there by the way.

It's actually fairly unpleasant..
Imagine not feeling your arms or legs, yet still being able to feel your torso. Then, add lots of weight on your back, making your breathing strained.

It was an amazing experience, but one that I would much prefer to not have again.

Yeah, that does sound like a once in a lifetime experience that should stay one.
Kinda wish my paralysis was like that, but I've had it every other month for over a year now.

It's only now that I get what was happening that I really talk openly about it, and having never seen a thread about it I figured I'd make it to see if anyone else here has ever had it.

I think you might be referring to me. I didn't mean to imply it was related to insanity just that i would have doubted my sanity if something like that happened to me and i didn't know any thing about sleep paralysis.

Quite honestly, I did that at first but I decided to wait it out a bit. Then sometime around the second time it happened I heard some people talk about a similar experience so I felt safe in known what it was that just happened.
It wasn't until a few days ago that I actually did some proper research on it.
