I'm very surprised to not hear any chatter about Sleeping Dogs around. I've tried the search box but it never gave anything recent.
In case you never heard of it, Sleeping Dogs is a game formerly known as True Crime Hong Kong, and it was supposed to be published last year but was canceled two months before release by Activision (alongside Guitar Hero). Square Enix picked up the game and gave it a new title.

Basically, it's a GTA-style sandbox game set in Hong Kong, and it's looking pretty neat.

It's coming out in August. Anyone else following this game at the moment?

Saw it on Steam.

It looked... competent, I guess. Didn't interest or excite me in the slightest though.

You can only drive around so many cities shooting people before they all start to look and feel the same.

Actually it's more of a Yakuza game done well, but for the 99% who never heard of that let's call it GTA: Hong Kong.
I am interested how it all turns out but hearing all shit going in the the background... it's not stacking up to something good and yet what they have shown looks incredibly solid, so the jury is still out.
Could be a GTA replacement since Rockstar decided to get all depressing on us, or a complete flop, with Squenix at the helm you never know.

Captcha: motley crew ... oh I see what you did there

I enjoyed the previous True Crime games so I'll be getting this game definitely. Sliding around on a motorcycle shooting bad guys in the face yes please.

Your enjoyment of previous True Crime games is irrelevant. This game was supposed to be a new IP before Activision decided to slap True Crime label on it. Then they canceled the project. Square Enix picked it up and renamed it into Sleeping Dogs.

I can see why some would call it "GTA:Hong Kong". Looks interesting though.

But I will decide if it is worth my money after some reviews.

I want to see some gameplay before I am convinced. It's really hard to judge something based on the story trailer. It spiked a little interest, but I don't know. I might end up getting it.

My brother is pretty much following this right at the start and likewise he was upset when he heard it was cancell. It's pretty much one on his life of future games to buy.

Errr, well, I had some interest in this, but with increasingly limited gaming dollars I decided to give it a pass, especially on release.

My basic opinion is that Activision is one of those "will do anything for money" publishers, and from that perspective they are good at picking properties and franchises. This game isn't a paticularly radical or experimental property, and if they decided to drop it, they have a bad feeling about the end results otherwise they would have fought brutally to keep it, or at least prevent anyone else from getting it. Square Enix is a good group, but they have had a LOT of misses, especially recently, and even their successes don't feel like they are living up to what they used to do. To me their flagship "Final Fantasy" series hasn't really been worthy of blockbuster status since the days of "X" and that's a looong time ago, and XIII was an outright disappointment to me. The point is that just because Squeenix picked something up is not the kind of guarantee I would have once taken it as, they have made me wary.

The game looks decent from the trailers and such, but all games look good in their promotional material (with very rare exceptions), you can't really trust that.

For all I know this will be the next big sandbox game, but I don't personally consider it worth the risks. I generally recommend that people wait on titles like this, and see how it goes before they grab it. This is the kind of game I'm going to want to say watch Youtube videos of people playing before I give them my money, and if this isn't good enough to spawn the interest to see things like that appear for me to get a very practical look at the game, well that kind of says what I need to know on it's own.

I will oblige (Maybe you could put this in the OP?)

Here are some recent gameplay vids: http://uk.ign.com/articles/2012/05/24/you-have-to-see-sleeping-dogs

The combat seems very much like the recent batman games, but not quite as smooth. Theres still a few more months yet though :p

I was sort-of keeping an eye on it, didnt realise it was only a few months away! (if it doesnt get pushed back).

There aren't many games set in Hong kong with a story taking inspiration from hard boiled/ infernal affairs.

Hopefully they will NAIL the atmosphere of Hong Kong. If the story is great i can forgive it for not really trying much new. Liking the just-cause car-jacking aswell.

One thing i have noticed in these vids is the LACK of arresting for a game where you supposedly play as a police man. Sure you are undercover, but there should still be the option to take them in alive :p

I`m interested, this all looks promising and i wait until a few reviews are up.
The only thing that puts me off a bit are the enviroment kills.
This looks more like the Punisher instead of an undercover-cop but i`ll wait and see maybe it suits the tone of the overall game. Batman fighting system, slo-mo shooting and open world (confirmed?) sounds great.

Yes, a criminal who kills is more believable than a cop. I hope too that there`s an arrest option because i doubt that they`ll change the story context. A morality meter would be nice, the more ruthless you act the more you`ll switch sides to the triads. I doubt we`ll see this since they would`ve used it already in advertising.
