This is a topic I haven't seen, and I've been wanting to be in a slow dancing spin for awhile (though I haven't been slow dancing in about 5 years).

I'll recall mine, because it was my first. I got to dance with a girl who I kind of liked, she grabbed me (I was 13, so junior high I suppose), having never danced before, she told me, "You have to dance with me!" she placed her arms on my shoulders, and because I had never danced before (embarrassing to admit), I put my hands on her shoulders. She then proceeded to grab my hands and place them on her hips (so it looked right now) and then began to sing, obnoxiously, but in a kind of cute way, to this little ditty (I was 13 in 2003, so to Older or Younger Escapists members, this sort of dates me as to what I have danced to):

Yup, The Freakin' Backstreet Boys. Now, this wasn't the only dance I have danced to, because I have danced to the over played "I don't wanna miss a Thing" by Aerosmith, and even had the opportunity to dance to "Everything I do (I Do it for You)" by Bryan Adams, so no complaints.

So, I will safely assume that many of us weren't all wallflowers, and we got to participate in a slow dance once or twice before. So my question to you all is, have you participated in a slow dance? Do you remember the first one? Any that were memorable? Do you remember the song? If you've never danced with somebody, what song would you choose? Have you danced at a wedding, Bar Mitzvah, or some other celebatory event that I can't conjure up? I want to know.

I don't remember the song to my first slow dance, but I remember how it went down.
I was a massive tomboy growing up so spent most of my time at discos in the back talking with my friends and watching them all attempt break-dancing.
I remember a friend of mine wasn't hugely popular with girls, but he clearly wanted to dance, but when he asked nobody really answered. I thought it wasn't nice that no girl wanted to dance with him. But then I thought, fuck it, I'm a girl, I'll do.

So I danced with him for the rest of the night. We ended up having a fun, if slightly awkward time.

My last slow dance was at my boyfriend's brother's wedding, and my boyfriend stood on my feet, twice.
Boyfriend has two left feet.
Both of which step on mine.

Noooope. If it requires a partner to be physically present, then I've never done it. Well, sort of.

I thought myself how to square dance and waltz if it counts. Well, the best one can manage alone anyway.

My first, no.
Most recently, my significant other departed to Sweden 2 months ago, and the last evening before her flight, we were dancing in our room.
I'm not much for slow dancing though, I much more prefer classical dancing.

My first slow dance was to this tragic musical excretion:

It was part of a (mandatory) drama lesson, with a teacher who didn't know shit. We were covering Shakespeare (guess which play) and so our teacher had us pair up and decided to film us dancing to this because of the tangential relation to god damn Shakespeare.

It wasn't that bad for me at the time, as it was an opportunity to dance with a girl I had a crush on, but still. It was awful.

I only ever dance in that small but wonderful window of time between joyous blind drunkenness and being paralytic. Given my energy levels at that point, its more likely to be a spider-leprechaun-on-acid kind of a dance, as opposed to a slow dance.

I'd be willing to give it a go if I a) had someone to dance with and b) didn't have two size-11 feet that find it hard enough coordinating for running, let alone dancing.

I don't dance.. EVER.

However I did go to a dance with a bunch of my friends once. I was physically dragged by 8 people onto the dance floor and thrown into this girl everybody wanted me to date...

I had no idea how to slow dance, but I managed to bullshit my way through it pretty well ^_^ The song was terrible though and I ran off the dance floor immediately as it finished....I don't want to dance ever again

I had a bloody great time at the rest of the dance, standing by the food stand with my friends, discussing films and lots of random crap ^_^

I have yet to do any sort of actual slow dancing.
My last opportunity to do so would probably have been at prom a few months back but they were playing shitty pop music so even if I was going to it wouldn't really have been fitting.

I don't know what the song was that I had my first slow dance to. It's the only type of dance i feel i can enjoy though. Not entirely sure why, dancing these days just isn't my scene with the exception of slow dances.

Don't know the name of the song, I was a little drunk, it was some generic pop from an artist I did not care for. I was pressured into it and it was awkward as fuck. I have never felt so out of place before.

So my question to you all is, have you participated in a slow dance? 2 outside of mandatory dance in phys ed.
Do you remember the first one? Yep.
Any that were memorable? Oh yep. It wasn't for good reason.
Do you remember the song? No idea. I think the first one might have been that Kings of Leon one "Sex on Fire" or something. I was more interested in the girl anyway. The second one, I was completely oblivious to it.
If you've never danced with somebody, what song would you choose? I have, but possibly "Swing Life Away" or "Northern Star".

Have you danced at a wedding, Bar Mitzvah, or some other celebatory event that I can't conjure up? I want to know.

Big one for some of us would be school formals etc.

I only remember one slow dance outside of cotillion. It was at a crappy mixer at the local tennis courts (because middle school dances must be called mixers) and I only danced with one girl I went to school with but never talked to as a poor attempt at wingmanning for my friend. All I remember beyond that was that we never made eye contact at any point once the dance actually started and that her shirt was really soft. I'm fine dancing with people, but slow dancing has been tainted by my awkward teen years.

On a side note, did anyone else here have to do cotillion, or am I the only one who lives in the snootier corners of the South?

I don't dance...

But from what I've gathered, apparently slow dancing is just kind of stepping side-to-side and slowly spinning in a circle... I think, the research is kind of wonky

Nope, never have danced in general, and I'm not really a fan of dancing.
Should the world ever end and I get into a situation where I'd have to slow dance, it would be to this song, for obvious reasons.

1989, our "Basisschool" graduation party (in my parent's garage). I was 12, the girl was Janey, and I have no idea what the song was.

First one I can remember was at a high school dance with a friend. Ended up dancing together at each slow song that night, good times. We even joked about it years later at our high school graduation.

The last time I've slow danced was at prom for that graduation (about 3 years ago now). Now I'm normally an anti-social loner who prefers to not get involved if it can be helped but I can drop all that if I feel like it. And that night I threw that out the window! After the parents left I danced in all but one song, each with different girls (pays going to these things alone some times). That was a fun night.
