I love Assassin's Creed but having lost my game recently, I haven't had any desire to go back and do the beginning all over again. Maybe one day, but I have a feeling I'll just wait till I get one of the sequels instead.

I think about when Zero Punctuation reviewed this game and Yatzee talked about how the guards freak out when you ride past them on your horse, completely true, completely a pain in the arse.
Yeah, I say ignore them and just charge through on your horse anyways, unless you're trying to get a viewpoint/flag/templar or whatever. And eventually the game will let you fast travel anyways.

And I 100% agree with random_bars, rehearsing your assassination and planning your strategy is extremely rewarding. I think the most common mistake people make with this game is that they try to play it like an action game instead of being stealthy.

If you like this game, I guarantee you'll love AC2 and Brotherhood. I loved the first game when it came out, but the sequels blow it out of the water.

Assassin's Creed is one of those series that gets better with each game. Unfortunately, if you don't play (and beat) the first one, every single one after will leave you completely dumbstruck. It makes it really hard to recommend AC II to someone who hasn't played I. I can't even imagine playing AC I now because, at least as far as gameplay is concerned, it's vastly inferior to it's brethren.

It'd be like taking the ability to drive from someone who's so used to the idea of a car they don't even think about it. Sure, you can ride a bike and car pool, but having a car was so much better...

It was kind of slow at first, but my biggest complaint about AC 1 was the blinding white light that flooded the screen every time Altair killed his target. Also, as a public service, do not try playing this game if you are recovering from a scratched cornea. I learned this the hard way. The aforementioned blinding white light was painful to say the least. But back on topic, stick with it, because it sets up AC2 perfectly.

Yeahh. It was a rather piece of crap. But I thought they had a tutorial level at the start? It was...vague, to be honest, but it taught me what I needed to know. The control scheme is rather awkward for the PC, but once you get around it it should be fine.
I frankly only found the repetitive missions boring, but the free-running made up for it. I loved climbing around the buildings and killing guards for no reason at all. :p
The white flashes are just to fit in with the futuristic concept of 2012, so I have no complains about that.

All in all though, just stick through with it. It's not that bad a game and it's a perfect setup to AC2 and AC:B.

Also: GOD DAMN UNSKIPPABLE CUTSCENES.

see, this is funny to me cuz i LOVED the opening, but HATED everything after that until the ending. it's one huge u-shaped curve of enjoyment. the opening is great cuz it isnt tedious and repetitive. i especially loved the short siege on your hideout. so if you hate this game now, you will hate this game. and yes, altair is a boring character voiced by a boring VA.
