Small Annoyances You Can't Get Over

You know how when you're playing a game you like and you notice something small that most people would just shrug off but you can't no matter how hard you try and it gets to the point where it almost hampers your enjoyment of that game? To (misquote) Fight Club, it's "... that small scratch on the roof of your mouth that would heal if only you could stop tonguing it, but you can't." That's what I'm talking about.

Some examples:

Dead Island: Been enjoying this game a lot and while it's not the prettiest whore under the bridge, the graphics are serviceable. I can ignore the low-res textures and shadows and pop-ins, but what I can't ignore is the awful glass-breaking animation. No matter where you hit the entire glass just disintegrates into nothing. I just noticed it awhile ago and spent almost 15 minutes obsessing over it and had to turn off the game and am going to take a break from the game and try and forget it but I don't think I'll be able to now.

Crysis 2: You know how in the multiplayer you can see your character model between matches? Well after my first few I noticed the but of the gun he was holding was clipping into his chest/shoulder. For a game that was suppose to be all about the graphics you'd think someone on the dev team would say something about it. After awhile it's all I would notice. Eventually I sold the game. Not because of that though, because the I just got sick of the game.

Dragon Age II: variously; the voice-acted protagonist, the poorly written supporting cast, the shambolic plot, copy paste environments, endless tide of nonsensical fetch quests, the WTF ending...

Not being able to save in Hitman: Codename 47. The game's hard (even when stealthy) even in esiest difficulty, and it's a pain in the buttocks not being able to save. Although that hasn't made me stopped playing it since I first got my hands on it.

I avoid spanish translations of any kind of game, I remember that the first time I played Soul Reaver it was in spanish. I completed it, but it was just plain annoying to hear everyone with a thick spanish accent. Of course, there are a few games with good spanish voice actors... although the only one I can recall right now it's Metal Gear Solid, Alfonzo Valles is a convincing Solid Snake just as David Hayter.

You know what? The sneaking mechanic in all Hitman games save for Blood Money. It never seemed to work for me, guards would open up without provocation, and every mission turned into a running gun battle. Blood Money reworked it to be based on the level of violence one had instigated during the level.

ooh thats a good one, i also hated how the game didnt really have a real point in itself

some others: kotor galaxy droid glitch i literally stopped playing the game and would threaten to hurt anyone that mentioned it for several years...i had been playing for 2 days straight and hadnt saved for several hours...

the one thing that really stuck with me from dragon age origins was the deep roads, i just developed a big dislike for them, no real reason

in a movie it would be from the new star trek movie...the noise the shuttle makes when it carries kirk to the academy 'dulululululu'....it haunts my nightmares

i'm sure there are others, but most of it is easily gotten over

Actually, I think the first one was good (until you got to the last level, no amount of sneaking would save you from that onslaught) but Silent Assassin just sort of screwed up in the detection department. You ran in front of a guard? bullet time (and I'm not talking about slow-mode) you innocently walked in front of a guard? THAT'S A SUSPICIOUS INNOCENCE, just stand around doing nothing in front of a guard? they would scratch their chin, carefully reach into their pockets for their guns and blast you away. Sneaking didn't really worked in any game.

I recall that I really founded annoying the amount of fantasy stuff in Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven. It's a good game yes, but it was not as balanced as the ones in PSX.
I mean, we all knew Onikage was kinda weird, but it's not until the end that it really hits you that he was a demon working for Lord Mei-Oh. And the first one was a good blend of mythology and reality. But Wrath of Heaven had a normal beggining (except for the whole Rikimaru rising from the dead) which ended up in a battle against all sorts of magical beigns.

Most recently, in the Battlefield 3 beta, is that I find it really hard to simply stand still. Even when I'm not touching anything my character still twitches and wiggles around. It doesn't really affect anything (though it makes it kinda awkward to place the radio beacon or use the bipod), but it gets distracting after a while.

Also, in Gears 3, the characters don't talk in Multiplayer as much as they did in Gears 2. Again, changes nothing about the game, but it still makes me kind of sad.

The 40-ish-second interview of Hugh Darrow in Hengsha in Deus EX HR that is looped for the entirety of your stay there. I had to shoot out all the big TVs last time I was there because I don't care about ocean temperatures!

The disembodied heads of your teammates at the bottom of the screen in Mass Effect 2. I rarely ever use mods, but I hadn't got out of the intro mission before I went scurrying to the internet in search of a way of getting rid of those damn things. Thank god for pc gaming, and modders :)

But Darrows voice is like sex for the ears!

OT: Also Deus Ex THe boss banter, that innterupts the boss banter, Hell the bosses in general.

The entire game of Bioshock..halfway through it just took to temporarily freezing every five seconds, to the point where it's unplayable. Changing settings doesn't help the problem either. Needless to say I haven't completed it.

Ladder climbing animations that don't sync up with the ladders. You would think the design team would agree on the gap between rungs, so both the ladder and climbing animation would stick to it. But no. Instead the player climbs the ladder on invisible rungs and ignores the rungs I can see.

The orks in Space Marine constantly calling you a "space marine". it got annoying after the umpteenth time it was uttered. Would have preferred it if they chucked in the odd utterance of "crump dat beakie"

Battlefield 3.

I like how they counted the extra bullet in the chamber when changing magazines, but you shouldn't spawn WITH the extra bullet already there, since you just started with a new mag.

Oh well, just a nitpick.

Alpha Protocol...just everything. It's taken me a week to do the first two levels.

Better than weapons that completely disappear. Your character moves the gun towards his hip or back, like he's going to holster it ... then it just vanishes.

The game gets MUCH better after you get out of the Middle East. Stick with it!
