OK, you've never played the game have you? Or if you have, it wasn't for very long, and against the computer on easy difficulty, because that's the only time mashing works. Yes, the controls are simple, but mashing will only get you so far, and you just have the wrong end of the stick when it comes to the controls. You can mash the buttons all you like, but when you come against a tougher opponent you are forced to use tactics and skill to win. This is actually very, very good game design - it's simple enough to pick up and have fun with, yet incredibly deep and difficult to master. It's a game where you need to know more than just the buttons to win, and this, in my book puts it above the likes of Street Fighter and Soul Calibur as a fighting game.

So yeah, it does matter if you're good at it. A good (or even average) player will beat a button masher every time, and it really does just sound like you're venting after being beaten by said button masher, simply because you aren't very good at the game.
