Sure, locking 63 out of 71 characters in a fighting game is a little too much. Feels like lately Nintendo has this hard-on for keeping content at arm's length. Like only enabling a couple of maps in Splatoon at a time, or selling Hard Mode separately (ie. BotW).
Locking behind what?Playing the game?
So do you play a lot of fighting games where 90% of the roster isn't available from the get-go or...?

"How dare you force us to play the game and get out of our robotic, optimized comfort zone!"
You know we already have a ping-pong of people misquoting for the sake of confirmation bias in this thread? Don't start another.

I don't have the game as of yet (don't have a Switch, promised myself I wouldn't buy anymore games until I clear out my massive backlog), but people complaining about having to unlock the characters seems weird to me. This was how it always was.

it's even funnier because it takes a hell of a lot less time to unlock all of Smash Ultimate's Characters than it does to unlock characters in all the others. especially Melee.

I thought it was fine. The only bothersome bit was that if my friend and I were playing co-op arcade campaigns, we can't do the unlock fight together. All in all the unlock fights were very plentiful, and it doesn't really matter what you play, the unlocks keep on coming. I played everything a little, unlocked everyone and still have much of world of light to go (I think)

Hrmmm... they could have started us with a few more, yes.

But this is not a big problem. Sure, it'll take quite a long time to unlock every single one, but it won't take you very long to build a very serviceable roster. You don't need every single one to have a great time; it's a very healthy roster even at half the size, or even fewer. It won't take you long at all to have 20 or so.

Man, so many people forget that Mewtwo's unlock condition was literally 'play the game for 20 hours or fight 700 battles', while Mr. Game & Watch was 'beat classic mode with every character (including the aforementioned Mewtwo) or fight 1000 battles'. Having to put time and effort into unlocking everything in Smash games is nothing new. At least it's only characters that need unlocking now, not stages, and they come one after another at a quick pace.

... Even I forgot about that. Jesus, that's how long it took? Was it that big of an issue back then, or is the mentality of "I want it NOOOOOOWWWWW!" a thing these days primarily? I mean, it took me 24 hours to finish World of Light, but I ended with 99.34% by the time I was done. Probably could've cut a ton of time off of that if I didn't try and be a completionist

I never got the complaint of having to unlock all the characters. I agree it seems daunting at first but the game throws many new characters on you incredibly quickly. You're likely to already get 10 new characters just from versus matches and classic on your first day. Its not even a hassle if the game just throws new characters at you whatever you do.

I remember leaving my Game Cube on overnight just so I could unlock Mewtwo before going into school the next morning... glad the unlocks are a lot simpler now.

back then social media platforms like facebook didn't exist and there was shitloads of videogame cheat code websites, alot of which had bullshit fake cheat codes/strategies on them.

because of that unless you specifically had an official guide for Smash Bros Melee, you would've had no idea that Mewtwo was in the game so alot of peoples reactions when they finally unlocked Mewtwo was "HOLY SHIT! YES! OMG!!!" etc. and the reactions to characters like Marth Roy and Mr Game & Watch was more like, lol who the fuck are these guys?

if social media had been around to spoil the surprise for everyone then you probs would've seen more people complain about how long it took to unlock those guys but it wasn't around so overall most people didn't really care and just got super hyped when they finally unlocked those characters

Oh, I get it, its the line up from the original N64 smash! I played the fuck out of that, despite it having virtually no modes.
Yeah I have zero issue with it since unlocking characters is fun and satisfying. The AI is surprisingly competent though and will fuck anyone unprepared and some people that already are.

Just because that's how something has been done before doesn't make it good like JRPGs sticking with random battles for 20+ years. What's really the point in keeping characters unlocked in a fighting game? If the gameplay is good enough, you'll just keep playing because it's fun. Like when multiplayer shooters used to have 0 things to unlock, people just played them because the gameplay was good. Not that Smash having to unlock characters is horrible or evil or anything but it's really not needed. The one time I played the new Smash with friends a week or so back, it was indeed less fun experience because we couldn't play as all the characters. Something that causes a game to be less fun is not a good thing.

Yeah, I didn't have an issue with this. Prerelease information even said that you'd start with the original 8 characters (providing you watched the Directs or read about them afterwards). The game throws a character at you every 10 minutes if you just play regular Smash, or you can hunt them out in World of Light or unlock them in various orders in Classic mode. It's really not a big deal with how quickly you unlock new ones.

About the only bad/questionable aspect of it is how damn difficult they get, especially near the end. At least the rematch option tones down their difficulty, and I'm glad there's a rematch option.
But again, the fights probably coulda been a bit easier.

As others have said, it certainly used to be worse. Least you don't need 20 hours combined Smash time to get Mewtwo again.

I wanna know, is it possible we might get more Echo Fighters at the sametime as we get the new DLC fighters?

They introduced the Echo Fighter concept in the build up to this game's release so I wonder if more are on the way?

In the last direct Sakurai confirmed none of the DLC characters would be echo characters.

I am not saying that they would be echo fighters, but would the DLC pack also come with an Echo Fighter as well along side that brand new one?

For example say one of the DLC fighters gives us Ryu of Ninja Gaiden, and along side him we get Akuma as an Echo Fighter for Ryu? (Even though we got Ken already, but still the point stands)
