I've been wondering. I smoke and I'm 17, yet my mother doesn't mind as long as I don't do it in the house, and she doesn't say anything due to being an ex-smoker. My father totally disagrees with it because my grandmother from his side of the family died from it, yet as long as I'm outside and not in front of him he doesn't mind as much. So my question for this topic is this, "If you had/have kids at my age, would you flip out or just discuss with them your point of view on the matter and tell them in the end it is their choice, and they will suffer the future consequences?".

I personally don't smoke, and I don't see the point to be honest. But I am fine with others smoking, as alot of my friends do.

Depends on their age more than anything. If they are 10-11 I would go to the gas station buy a pack and make them smoke it. If they are 17-18 they will only be allowed to smoke in a way/place so I don't smell it (including on them or anywhere in the house).

So long as they know the risks, pay for it themselves, and don't do it in my house, they can do what they want.

I'd be very disappointed if my child smoked. I don't know exactly what one could do to stop them though. (Grounding them sure has hell wouldn't work, making them stop would be impossible)

So I'd explain my point of view on the matter and say that if they want to smoke in future they should do it away from me.

Most people I know smoke, and I hate it. Its possible one of the shittest habits to have, fuck all gain etc. To be honest I'd be pissed off at my kid if he started smoking, I wouldn't want him to make an stupid decisions.

That is almost the exact way my father is, except he will sit ther and call me a f$#@&%# dumba$$ for it. He will bring it up in almost any conversation, and he does in more of a dickhead way than a caring way.

"Stop smoking or get the **** out of my house". I believe that is the proper reaction for a parent to have.

I would be ok with it 100% if they started of their own back but if they were just doing it to fit in I would tell them to get some fucking confidence.
Again, my father purely thought that I started cause of my friends (maybe cause one is a druggie/dealer/smoker, and the rest of my friends are smokers), he thought it was peer pressure. And he hadn't met them so I told him to stfu, because those friends (I don't do drugs, and my friends especially one won't even let me in the same room as anything but weed), are my best of friends. But again, he kept saying it was peer pressure till I got sick of it and told him that truthfully I started cause I wanted to. He tries to seem all high and mighty when he talks about that stuff.

Yay the anti smokers come a knocking insulting the intelligence of those who choose to smoke as if we somehow still haven't figured out it's bad for us. Generally speaking, we don't care about the downside. We're all going to die anyway so the chemicals I inhale really have no effect on the overall outcome.

OT- I'd make sure my kids fully understood what they were getting themselves into if they started smoking. I wouldn't tell them not to, just to be aware that once you're hooked, chances are you're going to stay that way. I'd also ask them to not smoke until they were legally allowed to do so, so in the UK that's 18 now. To be fair though, health risks aside there seems to be little point in starting smoking now because it's become less fun, what with pubs and bars banning smoking inside.

So you are prepared to pay a lot of very rich men for the privilege of getting cancer, in return for a mild little head-spin ? That sounds like an extremely stupid choice to me.
Actually, I roll my own. The price of a carton in CT is about $80, I pay $40 for the same amount. That means that extra $40 in state tax, I don't pay. And in general, a pack of self rolled cigarettes (I buy the tubes with the filters) last much longer and are more satisfying than a pack of pre-made ones (Like Newports, Marabolos, and ect.), also you can get all the different types, like menthol, light, kings (the shorter cigarettes), 100's, and so on.

I don't smoke, but half my friends do. It's given me a very tolerant approach to it.
If my child started smoking I'd let them do so as long as it's outside and they bought the cigarettes themself. I'd go through all "Smoking is bad blah blah blah" as well, just to cover my arse, but in the end, it's their decision.

I won't have kids. But if I have I wouldn't want them to smoke. But at the same time there is nothing I can do to stop them.

I would probably forbid them to smoke in my prescence until they're 18.

Until they are 18 any cigarettes I find them with become my cigarettes. That is the rule.

I would also explain to them that smoking doesn't make you cool.

Swearing lots and wearing a leather jacket makes you cool.

If they are dead young (10-12) I would be very annoyed, 17-18 they can pay for that shit themselves and if they are older and living at my house then they'd have to pay bed and board on top, I don't care if they have uni bills or anything to pay. If they can afford to buy cigs, then they can afford to earn their own keep.
