I would be ok with it 100% if they started of their own back but if they were just doing it to fit in I would tell them to get some fucking confidence.
Again, my father purely thought that I started cause of my friends (maybe cause one is a druggie/dealer/smoker, and the rest of my friends are smokers), he thought it was peer pressure. And he hadn't met them so I told him to stfu, because those friends (I don't do drugs, and my friends especially one won't even let me in the same room as anything but weed), are my best of friends. But again, he kept saying it was peer pressure till I got sick of it and told him that truthfully I started cause I wanted to. He tries to seem all high and mighty when he talks about that stuff.
I doubt I'd be like that if he explained he was doing it cause he wanted to I would be cool with that.

But then alot of kids do start because of their friends so it's a hard topic to deal with.
Yah I know it's a hard topic to deal with, but my father still seems to think every now and again that it was still peer pressure.

I would not like any future kids of mine to make stupid mistakes. Goddamn, it's 2010. I suppose the memo didn't quite get around that informed people of the many cons of smoking.

That said, I'd do everything I could to sway their decision; but in the end it's up to them. Ah. I hope smoking and other bad habits become history soon...
Indeedie - and frankly, it should be illegal by now for the tabacco companies to add all that nicotine to turn it into an addictive drug.

As far as I'm aware, tabacco without it is far less addictive.

I'd probably flip out. Not necessarily around them, but in a space where flipping out wouldn't cause anyone any serious harm.

My problem has more to do with the grisly death than anything else. If you smoke, you know how you're going to end(unless you plan on quitting at some point in the future, in which case why put it off?). Watching a lifetime smoker die is not a pretty picture. In fact, it looks pretty freakin' painful. Knowing that someone I care about as much as I would a child of mine was going to end up that way would probably kick my emotional teeth in.

Edit:

I wouldn't be able to blame them, though. I absolutely love the taste of smoke and if it weren't for financial and moral obligations, I would smoke every second I could.

Considering that the only cigarettes I ever have are the odd drunk one, if you were my child at 17 I'd slap you over the back of the head every time I saw you doing it. Other than that, it's your life and you'll kill yourself how you want to...

Generally speaking, we don't care about the downside. We're all going to die anyway so the chemicals I inhale really have no effect on the overall outcome.

I'm a smoker, and Wouldn't mind but not before they turn 18, Untill they are 18 they belong to me, and I won't be having it.
My house will be a dictatorship.

I can see where you're coming from. Basically it would be, "If you smoke and I catch you I'll have a new pack of cigarettes.", kind of ordeal or something close to that.

I used to be a full-time smoker. Now I only smoke once per two weeks.

It will probably be a shock if they started smoking. However, I won't take any bullshit. If you're going to smoke, you might as well smoke cigars. I hate cigarettes.

Thats cool, even though they are your kids you would see it more as maybe a bonding thing instead, or did I just go off track. Or is it because cigars are usually much stronger than cigarettes you wold hope it would discourage them?

I have kids and I would totally freak if they started smoking. Since the time they've been old enough to listen we've been pointing out to them how stupid, ugly and stinky smoking is. It's been an easy sell, but they're still young. When they're teenagers I assume it will be more difficult.

For the record, I'm an ex-smoker as well, so I understand first-hand both the draw and the damage of smoking.

So long as they know the risks, pay for it themselves, and don't do it in my house, they can do what they want.

Father =/= Dictator.
Couldn't have said it better myself.

OT:
What above guy said.
I would recommend them some brands that I like myself, like Cecil and North State, and also have them try cigars. Some cigars taste really fucking awesome.

In all seriousness though: They're free to do whatever they want, as long as it is a conscious decision.

I only smoke to enjoy quality smoking. I don't smoke the regular stuff like I used to. As you said, I prefer a bonding thing. My cigar smoking is always better when there's someone around to smoke with. I want to show my kids, if they smoke, something that feels like a reward instead of a necessity.

In a small résumé: Smoke big stuff, but smoke only on occasions.

Note* Cigarettes also leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

Yes that's the same thing with my mother and I.

Again, my mom knows I myself made the choice so she doesn't have as much a problem with it, in fact a couple of times she has asked me for a cigarette when she gets extremely stressed.

I wasn't pointing anything at you directly, mate, I was answered the
"If you had/have kids at my age, would you flip out or just discuss with them your point of view on the matter and tell them in the end it is their choice, and they will suffer the future consequences?"
Topic question.

I don't see your problem with the situation here - your parents are fine with it. As long as you don't bug someone by smoking near them or blowing smoke in their direction, I can't see any problem with it.

I was a smoker myself for a few years, so I know how you feel. I told my mum, and she accepted it. I even went and had a smoke with her a few times. Those were good times :)

I don't smoke, but there is a certain 'glamour' to it. If there were cancer-free and stink-free cigarettes I'd probably pick it up. There's something fascinating about having fire in the palm of ones hand.

Well, I'm fine with most people smoking, but that's because I don't care about most people. My child, on the other hand, is a person I'd rather not see slowly kill his or her self. So, I'd strictly forbid it because it's a fucking stupid habit, and it (often) puts you at an astronomically higher risk for a variety of severe health problems.

Nah I wasn't trying to make seem like you were pointing anything out, it just seemed to go along with my first quote.

OT: I don't have a problem it is just the fact that I felt it kinda weird, so I made the topic to see other peoples point of views to get an idea on the general thought of the topic.

I'd do what my old man did. "You're smoking rolling baccy, because it's cheaper, you'll get more out of it and you'll sodding well roll me one when you're smoking in the house." There'd be no smoking in the child's room or indeed anywhere other than in the living room whilst in the home. The child would be told to get informed about the dangers of smoking. They'd be made to understand it's not cool, clever or smart. It's a choice they and they alone can make and they should be making it aware of everything that it entails.

I'll be honest, I'm intolerant of those things. I'd get them out of my house and my life. I don't know if I could say that when I'm actually a parent, but right now, I can't imagine wanting to have them have anything to do with me. I'd feel like a failure, and seeing them would just open that wound over again.
