In objective based games like sabotage (MW2) or point capture (tf2) they do seem fairly useless. It means the "lone wolf" *cringe* snipers are doing nothing to contribute to the team. Instead opting to pick off a few in the hope of getting the most lolkillz.
That's only true when you're attacking. Taking an objective covered by snipers can be pretty hairy.

See, this is why I like the TF2 approach. In any multiplayer game I tend to go for the sniping/recon class if possible, and one of the reasons I play TF2 more than any other multiplayer game is that thanks to the Huntsman, snipers aren't limited to back-of-the-group cherrypicking and/or defense. They're still not great at mid-line combat, but they're a bit more versatile than they might otherwise be.

Waaaaiiit... So the guy who's picking off people who are GUARDING the objective... isn't helping with the objective? While it's not always the case, I know of snipers who take pressure off of the objective. I do that when I play as sniper. However, this may not be the case all the time, and I understand where your critique of sniping comes in.

Well I'm a sniper on almost every shooter I play, but I'm not a camper, I move around and defend allies when their going to objectives, AND I get flamed for it... I don't know why people hate snipers.

Example: on BFBC:2 I was covering a flag by taking out drivers to let our tanks get them so people flamed my inbox, but I don't see why, on battlefield you have to adjust bullet drop, their speed and distance away. battlefield you need skill to be a sniper, so my thoughts are people who flame snipers usually hate it because they can take the time to aim and fire instead to holding down the mouse button/right bumper until the object in front of you dies.

So i just laugh at flamers/troll and YES I do believe that snipers get a bad rap, but not just because of campers, but because of their patience and skill required to kill someone.

i just replied to this post, and if you read i actually also help with taking positions, i even get up close alot of the time with a PISTOL and fight with my allies to help them, not all snipers are coward who hide on the side lines, most do actually help. so you i agree with your remark to said person you quoted.

A lot of snipers will get a bad rap because of certain labels people use, such as "camper", or in some cases, "quickscoper".

I think many people simply view snipers as cowards for they usually aren't in the heat of the battle. Instead, they're far away watching you stroll through the map.

Of course, this playstyle, as with any other, has it's pros and cons, and it's up to the sniper to capitalize off of other player's actions.

All in all, snipers are no more assholes than anyone else.

[small]This is all from a Battlefield: Bad Company 2 perspective.[/small]

I've got no problems with the ones that correctly do their jobs. Snipers can be a valuable asset when they're clearing the way for the assault squads to capture a base, or when they're picking people off of mounted guns, or even clearing out enemy snipers.

My problem with them comes from having 8 of the 12 people on your team using sniper classes, and all of them are sitting on the same hill.

This happened to me yesterday. We were losing horribly and I was starting to feel like I was the only guy on my team. I was dying repeatedly trying to capture bases and upon respawning, I noticed why. The game had respawned me facing the Radio Relay on Harvest Day, and I counted 8 friendly snipers on the same hill. I looked at the scores and these guys all had around 200, meaning they weren't doing a single thing.

Most snipers are too stubborn to switch to a useful class when there are too many snipers on their team. They'd rather sit by 7 other snipers and be useless, just so they can try to say they're the best player ever because they killed a guy from a good distance away. Then they end up getting a mortar strike dropped on them by their team mate.

So, really I have no problem with snipers, but I do have a problem with the stupid people that normally play that class.

I personally find that most snipers are just arrogant. They think because they sit at the back of the map camping and don't killed that they are therefore the best gamers under the sun.

The problem is imo, snipers just take the fun out of the game.

The fun in an FPS comes from fighting others, usually in great battles. However suddenly, in the midst of all your fun, your character just falls over, no input between you and the enemy. Funs over, someone sniped you. Great job. Hope you had fun while it lasted.

I don't mind dying in TF2 to anyone, in fact I often laugh along and compliment them on a good job. Except the snipers.. there was no input. Its just fall over, wait to respawn.

*laughs* I didn't realize this thread was still going up into July. I'm actually really proud of myself.

Kind of a generalization, isn't it? When I snipe, I move around, get into the action. I use pistols and smg's instead of sniper rifles too.

I don't think that I'm the best gamer under the sun. Nor do I camp. Generalizations like these, no offense intended, are why I believe snipers get a bad rap in video games.

It is a generalization and I am sorry for it - I'm sure you aren't how I described you. Maybe I just feel that way about them because they always kill me... swines ;)

Funny part is that when I find someone camping, I hunt them down. It never turns into a sniper war, though. I just find them and use my pistol :3

I'm a sniper myself so i can see why people would complain about us. I can see how many people are frustrated that everytime they walk out of cover they get filled with lead, but that's just how we snipers play. If you can't stand snipers then maybe you should look up some strategies for counter-sniper tactics instead of just complaining about. If you're not going to make a effort in the game like we do then you shouldn't be playing the game at all.
