Snipers get a bad rap in gaming?

Sniping is only bad when your being a lone wolf. Example, in Bad Company 2 if someone is sniping but they don't bother to help allies. That is what pisses me off personally. If your going to snipe then at least provide cover fire, or assist the ground troops.

I usually provide cover for players to plant bombs and pick off anyone who tries to disarm it.

Personally, those that get killed often by snipers do not know the map very well or just keep walking into the same path without going for cover.

I don't mind what i would call "combat snipers" those who constantly move around using a sniper rifle with great effect. This was the case with Alien vs predator 2 (for the pc). It's nice to see people using it to good effect
What i hate are campers of the likes of your MW2 snipers, it bores me, you take a few steps and you die only to re-spawn and have it happen all over again. It's a problem which would be difficult for any FPS to effectively overcome, except by making a lot of maps which are really tight and claustrophobic where you couldn't use a scope if you wanted to.

I tend to follow the "combat sniper" route myself.

Same here. The only problem with that is if you come to a guy around a corner with your rifle out you have to kill him quick. This ends up earning you the title of 'quick-scoper', 'no-scoper' or, in the case of a fast firing rifle, 'noob'.

But, snipers often get a horrible rap because of all the horrible snipers that spend the majority of the match in one spot. They also spend the rest of the match running back to that one spot. This is the camping that I cannot abide by. Sitting in one spot till a guy comes then moving is a great tactic. Sitting in one spot the whole match so you can get as many kills from it as you can; shit tactic.

We get a worse rap because of the bad snipers who appear in large numbers.

Personally, I think that they get a bad rap. A few snipers deserve being called out for doing some of what they're accused of doing, but not all of them.

I have been killed by many a sniper in BF: BC2, but I take comfort knowing that when I switch to my sniper class I'll be the one ruining someone else's day in return. I love online play.

Some games I can understand people saying sniping is lame (Oh, hi MW2) but games like in the battlefield series I think sniping is done well since the only way you can get a guaranteed 1 hit kill is through a headshot and when it's a 2 hit kill for body shots the guy being sniped at has a chance to escape and perhaps even find and kill the sniper.

So to sum up, yes snipers do get a bad rap but it's only for certain games that the bad rap is justified and other games snipers get unfairly treated.

The only game I played regulary online was CSS and snipers in there have their place, sure they can snipe you, but a single m4 bullet can do the job jsut as well.

Because the majority of snipers in video games are used as Combat rifles, Shotguns, AND Snipers.

In other words, it sucks. Give us some real sniper physics!

That way, snipers seem quite real. (I snipe too and I have nothing against them, its just it seems unrealistic at times)

Snipers get a bad rap in games for the same reasons they do in real life. It blows getting shot at when you have little or no way of fighting back. You get worried about getting shot without any warning, and the thought that goes through your mind is "I. Hate. Snipers." It's pretty basic psychology.

If you like playing as a sniper, keep doing it. Ignore the hate, and support your team by shooting high-value targets. That's the job, good or bad.

The fun in sniping comes from the hunt i mean you can run up to an enemy and shoot them point blank but getting them from across the map is a lot more challanging.

I don't think sniping gets a bad rap, more camping and using C4, because they both fall into "noob tactics" in MW2 (I assume that's what you were talking about). If all snipers were like hutch or someone like that then there wouldn't be a problem, but because everyone cares so much about their K/D ratio (I still don't understand why) there's always gonna be camping. Sniping doesn't (and shouldn't) mean sitting at the back of the map shooting people from the same spot and constantly planting C4 to get cheap kills. Obviously like most the main problems with online gaming there's nothing we can do to stop that from happening, but still. Anyway I still enjoy sniping and I'm gonna keep on sniping, but not camping. Big difference.

well snipers counter the "hurrrr, me run in with big gun full speed ahead!" tactic, and those people get super pissed and flamed when they can't use their over powered weapon in the first place because we are being "too strategic" for them.


sniping has never really annoyed me that much, most of the time they either A) stay in the same spot or B) if they are moving, they dont have the drop on me anymore and i can sneak in a completely different way to get the drop on them.

unless your a ****** quickscoper getting a sniper close/mid range is as easy as pie

Sniping is actually my favorite way to play certain games like Team Fortress 2, Gears of War, Halo, etc., etc. Some games don't really work with sniping (looking at you CoD4).

But i think, like others have said, its the people that constantly die by snipers that hate them the most because, lets face it, some people online are not very smart and, knowing a sniper is still hanging around a certain area, will walk to the same place instead of going around. Though some people do use the sniper as an excuse to get some pretty cheap kills, i'll admit.

All of my sniper enemies are evil, but I actually move around, and still get kills too. I think that BC2 really has made sniping a very fair thing to do. I'll usually do all right and occasionally get the old 'HEADSHOT HEADSHOT HEADSHOT!'. Actually Snipers in BC2 are sorta cheap remedies. Like when someone gets the annoying tank in deathmatch, the Snipers in BC2 are the only ones with truly devastating equipment against it.

Really snipers do have one cheap thing. I mean, once you've got the altitude down you can go around and insta-kill for an hour.

You know what also bothers me about snipers?

That they`re in EVERY SINGLE FUCKING game with no exceptions. Really, i want you to name one online game without snipers. Just one. Think you can do it? I mean, all i want is to play a online game without snipers *Sniff* just once *Sniff* in my life, so i *sniff* could have some fun.

You know what bothers me about assault riflers? THEY ARE IN EVERY SINGLE GAME involving guns.
lol, a bit troll, I know, but my point is that its a valid, successful tactic for killing people too stupid to vary their direction and take periodic cover.

Sinpers are the best weapons to use in any game. For example in Call of duty games snipers take skill, waiting for the enemy laying traps with care packages and claymores and picking off the enemy, While with automatic weapons you hold down the trigger till all organic matter is fused with the wallpaper (Yahtzee) so i think snipers get bad rap from the people who cant use them.

Everyone can use a sniper, its not any less difficult to run around the streets surprising and getting surprised by others and then having a shootout. Snipers don't have the tension of being surprised or running into someone (most of the time).
