Practice. People assume that because they were good at the last COD game they will automatically be good at the next. Black Ops might still be a Call of Duty game but they've made so many changes you can't assume it will play out in the same way.

Think of it this way.

1, You camp you die.
The maps seem to be designed to specifically prevent camping, stay in the one place for too long and your screwed, unless your extremely lucky or have a good team backing you up.

2, Quickscoping is dead.
It is still possible but very, very difficult. Dont attempt it.

3, Sniper rifles are powerful as hell.
All of the sniper rifles can kill upper chest to the head.
The L96 can kill 1 hit anywhere except limbs.
Sure quickscoping is practically gone, but sniper rifles can still do things that other guns cant, like provide super long distance brain surgery.

4, Claymores suck.
I dont see the point of claymores.
You get a free kill most of the time sure, but then if your camping an entire team is gonna soon rush you anyway and mess ya up.
So much for a big fancy killstreak...

5, The scope is a lie.
When you zoom in you get that weird sway stuff for a few seconds.
Never, ever shoot while its doing this, apparently the shot doesnt even go anywhere where the scope actually shows in this time.

6, Secondaries are god.
M1911, double cap mag. Go.

7, Perks.
Practically any will do, but Ghost is pointless, whats the point of a stealth perk if your gun can be heard from the moon?
I prefer Hardline, Hardened or Scout and Hacker.

It's not worth it. Play BFBC2. That has the best multiplayer sniping I've ever experienced.
It was for me too, if only because I can't snipe in any other online game. It just seems so much easier in BC2 than anywhere else.

I haven't played COD:BO yet, but from what i heard it seems like more of a challenge, which may appeal to some people.
Are you kidding? The sniping in BFBC2 isn't harder or easier, it's just more awesome. The bullet drop and travel time make sniping an art rather than a twitch-click competition.

I manage to do quite well sniping. Sniping in Black Ops is an exercise in patience. You aren't going to go 20 and 3 anymore by running around with a snipe and dominating everything from short combat to long range. Instead you must camp like crazy, think like a real sniper, crawl everywhere, go slow and stay out of sight. Pick your targets carefully. If there are more than one person on screen its best to just lay low and not even fire cause you're going to die. Instead wait for that lone person thats in the open and waste him (after your freaking scope stops hopping around) O and if you're not playing hardcore, move after each kill even moving 20ft helps to prevent that revenge kill.

Last game I played last night was on Nuketown and I went 8-1 using a sniper rifle and nothing else.
I've never gotten more than 10kills in a match sniping but my deaths are almost always never higher than 1 or 2.

i have read throughout the internet that sniping on black ops is pointless and impossible but i totally disagree. Yes it is much harder and you may not be as successful with sniping compared to using AR's and subs but with practice you can be awesome still. i took on the challenge of using a sniper and the secondry python only every single map on sabotage after reading the criticisms. I have found after playing with it for a while you can actually quickscope with the new patch but it is still harder to give that extra challenge. my current best is 27-4 so my advice is with alot of practice especially with the bolt action you can get really good at sniping on black ops =).

I get the L96 with a variable zoom. Take the time to map out 4-5 good snipe points per map (they don't have to be great). Use Markarov dual wield in case of close range fights for your 2ndary. Use Ghost, Scout or Slight of Hand (I tend to reload alot), and Ninja (in case of close range). Use frags (semtex might stick and not get the xtra distance becuz of bounce) and decoys (throw them in front of you and wait). Use claymores and put one down behind you. Wait until you get a kill (or two of they're close) then pick up your claymore, switch to the Markorovs and RUN to the next snipe point. (that's where Ninja comes in handy). Doing that I get a good solid 15 and 7 even on a bad day. By the way, I just want to say that I DESPISE QUICKSCOPERS!!!!!!!! What I hate more is that when people get killed by you doing FAIR SNIPING, people call you a QUICKSCOPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't play much Call of Duty, but I'll state my opinion anyway.

Semi-auto snipers should only 1-shot if the shot is to the head, or a close range chest shot.
Bolt action snipers should always 1-shot unless to the hands or feet.

Before anyone gets on my back, I don't care about realism. I don't give a fuck about how realistic the damage of the weapons are. the main focus of any FPS should be balance.

Pay attention to your surroundings. If you have a nice set of headphones, pay attention to sounds and where your allies are. This can help you anticipate movements and give you an edge you might need. Find a relatively easily defensible position and know every in and out of it. Have an exit planned. Flashbangs are useful in this as they blind your foes, giving you a chance to friggin' book. If you fail to one-shot somebody, don't chase them. Odds are, they'll just run towards their homies and life will suck for you. Claymores also make sniping really useful..and so does the Motion Sensor, but beware of folks with Hacker Pro. They'll not show up and they could potentially steal it from ya.
