Sniping in Medal of Honor

I bought the new Medal of Honor game recently (well, bought is a bit incorrect, I traded in some old games for it) and while playing online it would appear that the completely ridiculous "I'm sniping, and thus good at the game" mentality has carried over from Call of Duty.

It's difficult to overstate how much worse sniping makes the game right now - snipers have next to no recoil, no or incredibly tiny amounts of idle sway, are incredibly accurate, are unaffected by bullet drop and anything above the first sniper rifle (which you can just spam with near-100% accuracy anyway) kills in one shot to the chest. And, to top it all off, if you shoot someone aimed down a sniper scope it barely affects their ability to aim at all - you can be shooting somebody and they can still kill you with a single shot as though the multiple injuries to their face are not actually an issue to them.

Due to the overpowered nature of the sniper class in Medal of Honor, around 50% of every team will be playing it. This means that around 50% of every team will be sitting in the back of the map doing utterly nothing productive and just making the game less fun for everyone involved. And, to make things worse, they're convinced that it proves that they're good at the game. As a result of the high quantity of camping sniper players, it means that everybody else is also forced to camp, because if they move out they get shot and killed almost instantly. This slows down the game to a ridiculous degree.

In objective modes, your 50% sniper team composition will have you crushed time and time again by anyone with the brains to realise that sniping isn't the most skilled way to play the game. The majority of people will just ignore the objective to sit on a rock somewhere and rack up the kills (usually also an incredibly low number).

While I'm sure that DICE will actually come out with some sort of solution to this (since they're one of the few companies who actually seem to fix their games) I'm interested to see what the Escapist community thinks about the issue.

Somehow or other I don't find it fun to be repeatedly killed by somebody who is utterly convinced that they're xxixIZixziIX l33t pr0 XxzxXIt while they're actually playing by far the least skilled class.

Oh, and, as a note, please can those of you with nothing to contribute to the discussion (i.e people who will just post OH I GUESS MEDAL OF HONOR IS SHIT THEN DURR or people who're simply posting to insult a game they dislike) please refrain from joining the discussion. And if you haven't actually played the game, please don't state opinions on the game borrowed from others.

Alternatively... you could do the same and hope that everyone does and then you'll sit there until Christmas 1914... You'll start singing Christmas carols in German, to which the British will join in English. After an hour you will all go into the most empty space in the map, hereby named No Mans Land, and you shall play FOOTBALL!!! (or Soccer as you transcontinental Americans call it) Until someone pulls out a grenade and destroys the whole team...

In that case play the one person with brains, make good use of cover, sneak around behind them and brain them all with mass amounts of lead. Teach them that sitting on a tiny rock overlooking a certain section of the map is a "nay nay" because a ninja such as yourself will show them to cover their asses...

A friend of mine who brought the game said i would love it for the very reasons you posted, i mean i love being a sniper in games but theres no point if you can own without a fight, i'll just stick with bad company 2.
(though i find the idea of whole sniping teams just sitting in an objective game type doing nothing quite funny.)

There's an issue in that most of them sit on an elevated position in their spawn - if you go into their spawn it comes up with "RETURN TO BATTLE" and you die after a few seconds.

I think I must be one of the few who hasn't had this problem. I would guess that maybe a quarter of my deaths are from snipers. Are they usually 1 shot kills? Almost always, yes. But as I said, most of my deaths are from non-snipers.

Run from cover to cover, use smoke all the time if you're a rifleman. I play as if there is always a sniper around the next corner and it seems to work. If I assume there is a sniper aiming for me I take extra caution moving forward.

Play almost any FPS and the Sniper class will be massively over-represented. The snipers-are-awesome stereotype is well-rooted in gamer society, and this is NOT because said class is over-powered.

That said, I don't agree with a high-power sniper-rifle NOT killing someone if shot in the chest, I think thats a nice and realistic touch. But I also don't agree with sniper rifles being perfectly stable, have no bullet-drop and be 100% accurate all the time. MW2 does have this problem too btw, as the SHIFT button seems to make all your troubles go away as you take your shot...

The problem with sniper-rifles in modern FPSs is that the maps are very small. There is no room for doing some actual sniping, no room for the stealth part of it, which is why sniper-rifles in these games are much like assault-rifles only more powerful. They are about as accurate, lower rate of fire but higher damage. This is a typical trade-off situation, you have a few classes, some are rapid-fire but low damage, some are in the middle and others again are slow-fire but high damage.

I miss how Battlefield series used to be... Big open maps, plenty of varied terrain, vehicles and classes, making sniping so much more interesting. Finding a good spot, picking out the highest priority target, take your shot and decide if it is necessary to find a new spot or not. Good times...
