This is to the guys that play FPS's use the sniper rifles and can get a head shot immediately after turning a corner (namely those in counter strike).

How the fuck do you do that. I would like to know how the guy I've got pinned using my AK, can just stand up and shoot me in the head.

Enlighten me.

I guess their just really good at it.

There are a lot of people out there that I think must almost have a religious need to get good at the game their playing.

...also: they could be using wallhack.

I tend to be obnoxiously good at these things without wallhacks or aim bots. First of all you need to look at the fact that you're only x high and every other character in the game is x high, so when you stand up you've already got a spot you can be aiming for (or you can stand up, check, see someone crouching and prepare from there).

The other good one is equipment. I can't stress enough how good my choice of gaming mouse is (It's a razer for anyone who cares) because it's sensitive as hell and has good responses. Coupled with my reflexes (i can catch knives and arrows) the accuracy is phenomenal.

Edit: And yes some games "auto-headshot" if you're within a certain fudge factor area.

I know a few excellent snipers. One doesn't understand why everyone else can't pick it up (The sniveling elitist tart that he is) while the others say it's a lot of practice, getting used to the controls and sensitivity of said controls, and in games where one can adjust these settings, it's finding the settings that work best for them.

I for one can't snipe to save my life. I know in Halo 3 i could almost count on wasting three rounds before even being able to hit a target, and that's not if they ducked for cover as the bullet zipped by. It's the same for other FPS save for COD 4, but I'm only successful in campaign, where the enemy is nothing more than meat bags with half cognitive motor skills.

Part of it is luck. I snipe when I can in Halo 3, and while I'm practiced enough to pull of a headshot 60-65% of the time, sometimes the planets align and you get a perfect no-scope from across the map. It is mostly practice, though. Like the above post says, you need to find your sweet spot with your controls and sensitivity. You can get better, by the way. I sucked when I started, and now the sniper rifle is my best weapon. So yes, you can improve. You just have to stick with it.
But I have noticed people who are either ridiculously, consistently lucky, or really have no lives and nothing better to do. I'm talking about the kind of people who ruin the game for you by being too good at it. Like, you'd rather quit than keep playing with them. Anyone else feel like that, or am I alone?

Are you standing still? If you are a stationary target, that would make you easier to hit. Think about side stepping or jumping from time to time, just to throw off any would-be assassin's aim.

Sometimes. Thing is though, I'm the type that will first get a .01 kill:death ratio (this is the right way, right?), and then, as I keep getting used to the game, can get a 1.x kill:death ratio, so I accept loss, and move on. Sometimes though, you have those freaks who have nothing better to do...

As for sniping, I say I'm alright at it. I can't no-scope, but I'm alright in games like Halo 3 and COD4. In BF2142 though, I pretty much suck at all combat, and stick to being a medic.

Edit: Seems I'm 1337... awesome.

It's because sniping in FPS games is unrealistic to the point of absurdity.

Allow me to take one of the most famous examples: The Accuracy International Arctic Warfare/Magnum (better known as the AW/P in Counter-Strike). A fifteen-pound sniper rifle that fires .338 Lapua rounds (delivering about TEN TIMES the kinetic energy of a 9mm round), typically mounted on a bipod to ensure anything resembling accuracy. However, in Counter-Strike, you can jump off a ledge, land, scope and pop off a shot within one second and have it be pinpoint accurate. And so long as you don't move while you're reloading, you're fine to scope and fire again immediately after.

Try this at home! Find a relatively large bag of dog food or cat litter. Place your hands under it and hold it to your shoulder. Now imagine that you're going to do this while running around and then taking shots.

Scope drift? Fatigue? Flinching from taking incoming fire? Who needs that?

And that's why I absolutely hate sniper rifles in online FPS games. All of the benefits, few (if any) of the drawbacks.

Most games actually do this now. Granted, people still manage to rape the living hell out of everyone else on the playing field regardless of this, because it only takes them all of half a second to aim at your face from across the map and 'pull the trigger' [Click the button lol]. Bastards.

Once upon a time I used to play Counter Strike: Source, and while I wasn't totally bad at it when I was the top of the score board my team wasn't doing really good.

These days I like my FPS coupled with a xbox 360 pad that makes aiming harder for everyone. Team Fortress 2 is my game of choice for team based FPS fun, and the game doesn't give a magnificent scope to the sniper. More to the point the sniper has a bolt-action rifle, which automatically takes him out of the scope-mode during reload. Add to this the fact that it's really hard to hit a target that isn't

1) In clear sight

2) Stationary or moving in a consistent way

3) shooting at someone else

and you have a game that really requires some skill to get good at sniping. Sure, there are still some players out there that can blow my head off at the drop of the dime, but there are far-far fewer of them than in any PC FPS with a sniper rifle in it.

So, in conclusion: console pad is the ultimate equalizer!

sniper asshat here, and its all practice.

It becomes second nature, and with the right mouse you don't even need to think when going from

'see target'

back to

'looking for new target'

Just experience. Everyone's skills get a tiny bit better every time they play, and it adds up. On that note though, there will ALWAYS be someone better than you, so don't get discouraged.

I totally agree on the mouse thing, and it absolutely MUST be wireless. But on another topic, I call bullshit on you catching arrows, maybe knives but unless someone threw the arrow at you, then I say you're lying.

I used to think sniping was a little cheap until I actually tried getting good at it. It does take a lot of practice and good reflexes to snipe well in most games.

Counterstrike is a bit of a special case, I think. The AWP is perfectly accurate if you're standing still, can be reloaded extremely quickly with the macro, and is a one hit kill if you hit an enemy virtually anywhere other than their foot. Plus the rifles and smg's in CS take a second to aim... which is about the second it takes to be headshotted by an awp.

Can't provide a video of me (there's no pictures of me on the net except for a court photo - but we won't get into that) but there's others who can do it (check some of the comments here: http://mythbusters-wiki.discovery.com/thread/924069/Catching+Arrow?t=anon ).

I never said how fast it was going. I wouldn't try it fired from a compound bow for example, but we used to do this with the bows we had in high school. All 6 of us (me and 5 mates) could do it - though we had a fair few accidents!

*shrugs* call BS or not, doesn't phase me. Nothing to prove, nothing to lose.

I snipe a fair bit. CS sniping is bullshit for sure. TF2 is awesome because of the balancing. COD4 is awesome aswell because you actually have to lead your target, and lag creates another factor to consider

I don't care for games where sniping in such fashion that you stated, because in those, you can typically die before your spawn ping reaches the server, never mind take 2 steps, which is something I try to avoid.

-and the Hit Detection sucks in CoD4, and Sniper Rifles are extremely Nerfed, and the Lag makes the already bad hit detection even worse, and to top it all off, when you Hold your breath, your character decides that breathing heavily and waving his rifle around before he settles down to take a shot, is also a great idea.

Also, what do you mean by "lead your target"?
