Okay first of all, this is a thread about the ending. Obviously, there will be big spoilers here so I'm assuming you have either beaten the game or don't care....alright, moving on.

So in the ending, you kill god, reunite with all your old friends and then fly to the new world which looks like Earth or possibly is Earth (I honestly don't care if it is or isn't) and it cuts to Lightning in a very modern looking, non-fantasy world, wearing regular clothing. But she also says, "The crystal age is a legend from before the world was born, and it ended before you were born." Then a little later she says, "Soon we'll be together," after looking up in the sky at an airplane.

Are we supposed to have any idea who she's talking to? I mean if I had to take a wild guess, I'd assume she's talking about a child Serah and Snow may have had together, but there's not really any evidence to support that. Serah is the only person I could think of that Lightning would care that much about seeing, but she sure as hell wasn't born after the age of crystal

In the ending, Lightning is in 'our' world. Specifically France. You can even pinpoint exactly where in France if you were so inclined because it was modeled after an actual place in France.

She's probably talking to the player in that instance. The events of FF13 the series supposedly took place 'long, long ago in a place far, far away'. You know, like Star Wars.

Ooh, so Lightning is seeking out the player? Kinkayh!

I have only watched Spoony's shtick on FFXIII and read about the plot to Lightning returns, but is there some reason for breaking the third wall? Does it match with some earlier established theme or symbolism?

Just seems kinda random and uncreative, with the whole "Oh, this Fantasy world is in the same universe as our world, for some reason!"

As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be any real merit or reason why Lightning and friends are here now. Aside from the tired jokes about how Toriyama needs his waifu Lightning. Ignoring that most of the anecdotes relating to that (Such as him wanting his girlfriend to dress as Lightning for him) were posted in tabloids and not true.

I've got to hand it to Square. Regardless of the overwhelmingly negative feedback from everything Final Fantasy 13, they still made a trilogy and kept to their artistic vision.

Shame it sucks though.
Negative feedback from the West, which is not their key demographic. FF13 was very well received in the East, scoring highly from respected outlets like Famitsu.
