i just watched the trailer to fight night champion and it looked standard enough.. shots of created fighter, shots of famous fighters but something at the end intrugied me...

there was a boxing promoter talking to the created fighter's trainer then it cut to the created fighter getting knocked out in a prison boxing tournament.. inremesting!

what do you guys think of ea sports games having backstories?

I wouldn't buy it even if it did. Sounds innovative but will the true fans really care or would it just be annoying? The only sport I watch is F1, therefore the only sport game I can stand to play is F1. I would personally hate it if they tacked a story - NFS style onto my F1 experience. I can't see massive sports games like FIFA or F1 being improved by it.

Doesn't the new F1 codemasters game have a huge backstory element to it? Have you played it?

Dude, you bumped a thread twice within two hours of posting. Simply, don't. On any forum. The only exception is asking for help to stop your computer from spontaneously combusting.

Anyway, I don't think it matters. Those who wouldn't normally buy it still won't, and those who would still will. It's a sports game, the only "story" behind one is whatever happened to the real teams, which, outside of sports circles, is incredibly dull and uninteresting.

Oh god I hope not! I haven't picked the new one up yet because Black Ops... well Black Ops. Actually maybe I should get it to see how it plays out. From what I've heard DiRT2 had a story an it was supposed to be quite good?

I haven't played Dirt or F1 2010, so this is just based on video reviews I've seen:
It doesn't look like the same kind of story described in the OP, but you do "play the role" of a rising F1 racer. After races you do answer interview questions and stuff that apparently change the game a bit, you renew contracts and can get signed on by bigger teams if you do well.

Not really a "story" as it's not prescripted or anything, but definitely more story than the usual "after race number 1, you then move on to race number 2".

DiRT 2 had a story, yes. But it was very very vague. I'd say it was really more of a tribute to the career of Colin McRae, a famous rally driver who died about two or three years ago and apparently it spanned some of the events of his career. But to be honest, I was more there for the going sideways at 90mph stuff.

OT: Not the first sports game to have a story, which would be Toca Race Driver way back in the days of the PS1 I think, nor will it be the last.

Anyway, it'll probably be the traditional "rags to riches" thing. Start out at nothing, work your way up slowly and then become Heavy-Weight champion of the world and include such plot twists like your manager getting bumped off, you getting caught up in a drugs scandal, illicit affairs with ladies of the night and weigh in punch ups.

...If it does have all that in its story, I might consider getting it.
